480 DB Hydraulic Steering Leak - Servo Box

Oh....and you have NEVER done that before.....it's like the soup stirring the pot for once.

You have all crapped up my perfectly good thread.

Did he say crapped up?????

Now that you've all ruined this thread, I'll show the final result...

Here's the graphite SAE 841 bronze sleeve pressed in:

Along with a super corrosion resistant kyrptonite impregnated grade 8 bolt (and enough shoulder for the tie rod mount)...

Off to try and man handle this back in the boat this evening.

Godspeed!

The 'shank' you are mentioning is called a shoulder and that bolt you just got looks much better. Sorry, I'm on my anniversary vacation and didnt' see this until now, but as I was catching up I thought an axle bolt with a longer shoulder would work well. Sounds like you've solved it.

Shank... shoulder.... hey... I'm not a machinist... "Shank" sounded better than "the smooth part".

I once knew a skank who got stabbed with a shank in the shoulder.

Maybe Ron can put it to music.

Must be fixed b/c he's in Rock Hall, MD.

I heard he put the "angry wife" in the bilge with a crescent wrench on the rudder post and he just calls down port or starboard.

I found the instructions for the rebuild on that servo box...

"Detail C" is what is leaking.... Doesn't look too bad to replace other than figuring how to get that retaining ring (13) out. At a minimum, seal (12) is leaking or the gland assembly (13) where the push rod comes out is leaking. Don't suppose I can find a SeaStar dealer open that has this seal kit in stock on Memorial Day. Definitely one is going in the spares bag.

Hope all you 480 DB bastards that are out enjoying your boats today while I'm stuck at a dock get rained on.

Four Suns, I also need to repair my leaking power steering servo valve block. Do you have a copy of the Rebuild Instructions you listed in Post #2 (http://ww2.seastarsteering.com/PDFs/886495D.pdf)? Seastar has removed all instructions - probably due to liability reasons - but I can still buy the seal kits. Thanks!

Old thread Wayne. We unfortunately haven’t seen Four Suns (Gary) for a while here.

I was able to order a seal kit for my ram from SeaStar and my CAT dealer (who supported my previous boat) was kind enough to rebuild it for me.
