420/44 DB Owners Club

I try to carry more fuel in my port fuel tank than starboard by feeding the genny from the starboard tank and having the bypass fuel go into the port tank. And visa versa when if it starts listing to port.

If I’m carrying full fuel (or if I’m not), I try to store at least 5 “reserve” cases of Corona beer (bottles) on board stowed under, in and around the port cabin until I reach my destination - That’s good for about 180lbs.

Do you have the pull-out sofa bed on your boat? Not that heavy, but would add some weight. I have it on mine.

What side of the boat are your pumps and hydraulics for the lift?

Sold my 340 DA last week and just had a survey done on a 2004 420. What a boat! If all goes well ill be bringing it home this weekend. I got a lot of pointers from reading through this thread......thanks!
You got a good one! I have the same boat. Any questions you have, fire away. @BJD same goes for you!

If the boat is listing to STBD side, removing the pullout bed on the port side will only add to the STBD listing issue.

IMO, those who are trying to solve listing issue, should use 400LBs (what Tim posted earlier) as a guide, in regards to how much you'll need to add to PORT side, or remove from STBD, in order to achieve the balance.

My list is about 2 inches. I do have the bed but not the Flybridge A/C (assuming thats to stbd too). The pump is slightly right of centre so I’m thinking it wouldn’t add to the list much. The galley is the culprit.

I did the engine room inspection cover mod a few weeks ago. About 60 litres total vacuumed out. The forward washing machine cavity was dry.

It is a pain, but the fuel distribution does help to manage it.

When you think about it, everything is biased to the right.

House batteries, galley surfaces and equipment, even the flybridge seating is biased to starboard. In my case even the Watermaker is on the right. Lead seems a bit to dead weight to me. If I had to do anything, I think I’d prefer to put SS chain there. If I ever have to sell, It’d be easier to explain to a prospective surveyor. At worst he’ll just think I have too much money ...

And hey, someday it may come in handy ...

I just realized that when I was posting late last night I made an error, which I just corrected on my post 2198 and 2203.

So just to clarify, since the boat is listing to STBD (meanig it has more weight on the STBD side), the idea is to remove the weight from STBD and add the weight to PORT side.

I knew what you meant. ;-)

Does anyone know here I might be able to buy a later model SR steering wheel? Similar to that in the photo (2018 L55)? Thanks.

Exactly. Some have removed it. I still have it and also don't have a list to starboard. I would guess the mattress and mechanism would only be about 100lbs max though.

House batteries...

That's interesting. My pair of thruster batteries are just on the starboard side of centre, but all starting and house batteries, 6 total, are as far port as possible. That's a total of almost 450lbs of batteries, but only about 150lbs more than factory.

My vote would be to just keep adding house batteries until the list is gone!!

I removed mine only b/c it provided tons of storage. I don't have the listing issue, so this is irrelevant. But, having that space filled easily compensated for removed weight of the bed frame.

Are you saying that you have 6 batteries aside from the thruster batteries? Oww....I think I remember the mod you did to increase house power. I have 5 on the PORT side and 2 for the thruster on the STBD side. What I was suggesting for those with listing issue is to move the thruster batts to the port side....the further to port the better. Just by this move one would be transitioning ~120LBs from STBD to PORT. No brainer in my mind.

Yes that is true...I would definitely put more than the weight of the bed in there if it was an empty space!

Yes, I have 6 total on the port side. 2 for starting the starboard engine, and 4 for starting the port engine, generator, and house use (still think this is a dumb config, by the way!). The thruster batteries are still on the starboard side, near the centre.

Moving the thruster batteries would help those with the list issue. Bit of wiring to run, but not too big a project.

Do you think that adding an additional freshwater tank and tying into the existing fill would be an alternative? At least the weight could be used for extended cruising?
Where would you put it? In order to make that much of a difference it would need to be a pretty large tank.
Mine lists to the starboard perhaps because I took out the pull out bed in the salon for one. One thing you could do is move the two batteries for the thrusters to the port side depending on how many batteries you have down in the bilge already. If you only have the stock set up there are only four there aft the ladder.
Enjoy your new toy.

I understand that.
What I ment was I watch the 44DBs advertised in Yacht World.
You might see mine some day soon perhaps on boat trader though as I will be marketing myself but inviting brokers to participate.
