Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

My 3126's ran rock steady@ 180 until last month when I replaced them with new thermostats from caterpillar.... The new setting is 190 !!

My 3126's run at about 185 all day long once they're warmed up.

That's what mine run at.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

It's tough to see from the SR guages. Mine run around 185-190. As far as water flow goes. Mine are similar with flow. I replaced my port pump with a new rebuilt one and I still get low flow, like you describe. The new pump improved it, but not what I would have expected.

My thoughts now are to go through the cooling water flow item by item. Clean out the heat exchanger, oil, and transmission. Next move onto the aftercooler. I suspect one if not more of those items are slowing down my flow. Also the exhaust shower would be clogged too.

Those are my thoughts... Let's keep in touch via PM and see what we can come up with.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I guess my real question is how much water do CATs pump out the side discharge.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I thought about flushing the motors with Rydlyme, but I don't want to be chasing a problem if I don't really have one. I brought the boat up from Baltimore to the 1000 Islands and like I said it ran 180 degrees the whole trip and never had a hiccup.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I agree! But I feel like I have a problem developing and those are the areas I am planning on attacking when I lay up. Right now the temps are good and I like you have run with no issue either. I am suspect of the heat exchangers myself and am going that way first, working up to the aftercooler and turbos while they are off.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I recently purchased a 2001 410 Sundancer with 3126 Cats. Everyone in our marina is running either Cummins 480ce's or QSC 500's. My question is compared to the Cummins the CAT pump very little water out out the side discharge when idling. If you bump it up to 1k rpm's there is a little more flow but still not as much as the Cummins. My temperatures run at 165 when running 1000 rpm -1500rpm and when on plane at 2400rpm they are rock steady at 180. Is this normal?

I pulled the cover and looked at the impellers and they looked good.

Thanks Jeff

Yes it is normal. I have gone through everything and even replaced water pumps and I get pathetic flow at idle. When I rev the engines, the flow is fantastic so I don't worry about it. I also run at a steady 180!

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

Remember, the water coming out of the side of the boat is really just the overflow part of the underwater exhaust system. There is more water coming out under the boat.

I got into this with Caterpillar and Sea Ray in 1997 when it appeared the flow out of one side was significantly less than the other side. We checked the cooling water pressure at various points in the system and ended up realizing that even the plumbing difference between port and stbd sides made a difference in the flow out of the overflow but my engines have never run hot no matter what the overflow amount was.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

Thanks for everyone's responses that makes me feel better. Not having any CATs to compare it to in our marina, I didn't want to chase a problem that I didn't have.

I am considering the purchase of a 2000 410EC. I have a question on what size props are standard. It's a gas boat with the standard Horizons.

Basically the same boat you have now, why upgrade?

Actually, not the same hull. Another foot on the beam, different layout and a nicer more updated look.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

House (Port) battery bank suggestions?
Both banks and the genny all currently have Interstate Cranking Batteries.
Genny - no problem.
Stbd bank- no problem since it powers things that run from the helm and those things generally wouldn't be used unless the engines are running.
Port Bank- Powers all the 12 volt creature comforts and I'd like to not have to run the genny all day on the hook. I don't want to listen to it all day, and it can be annoying to any boat rafted on that side of the boat.
Looking for suggestions for replacement of both batteries on the Port bank that will have enough cranking power, yet deep cycle abilities enough to handle the fridges and other 12 volt creature comforts for a day on the hook.
Would prefer batteries that will fit in place of the current ones in the trays with no modifications since space is tight there.

Can't recommend rolls surrette enough. If you want a battery to last 7-10 years then this is the option.

And newer styling, I get it.

I am about to replace mine (ordered last night) with the same ones I put in over 6 years ago. We anchor out for days at a time so I wanted plenty of capacity on the house bank so I don't have to run the generator but early in the morning and again in the evening. Trojan J185H for the house and just group 27 for the starboard side. I have a watering kit on them so maintaining is easy. If I didn't have some extended day cruises coming up I could have pushed these to the spring.

The J185H is 123 lbs but is 12v and needed only a slightly larger battery box. I didn't need to revamp my cables either and have tons of capacity, enough for the normal house systems including a large amp for my cockpit sound system.

Thanks! Your needs are probably greater than ours since you anchor out for days at a time. We just anchor out for a long single day.
They look interesting, but I'm scared off at the thought of trying to wrestle that much weight in and out of a battery tray. I'm also hoping to get something that fits in the existing tray.
The data sheet also doesn't give any info on cranking amps. Do they have any problems starting your port motor?
I need something with a decent amount of cranking amps for those cool NY mornings in the very early (April) and late (November) parts of the season when I can be calling on them to start the port motor in temps in the mid 30's.
I'm probably better off with some kind of dual purpose cranking/deep cycle batteries on the port bank for my needs.
Wondering if anyone with similar needs has had good experience with a particular battery.

JVM,

The PO of my former 410 (the late Dominic - OSD9 on CSR), put Optima Blue tops (Grp 31s) in all 5 positions in 2010. The current owner still has the same batteries. We would occasionally anchor out for a day with no problems without the genny in the spring or fall, but we are genny all the time here in the south during the summers.

I like that idea! Especially if they fit in the existing trays. Was the original battery charger capable of charging them without any changes? Mine still works perfectly so I'd rather not have to change it.
