410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread**

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

Jeff,

I went thru this with my 450DA a couple of years ago. While I can't address the 410 system because I am not that familiar with it, I can tell you that the 450 has roughly the same layout and challenges. We found that Dometic has acquired several marine air conditioner names. They have redesigned the self contained units like we have in our boats. Their new Vector Turbo series used a turbine style compressor and a new air handling fan. The units are more compact and much quieter and more efficient. As the old unit wears, the piston compressors get less efficient, so you will notice a marked improvement by just changing to the Vector Turbo style unit. I think you can get up to 16,000 BTU's in a 115VAC unit.........in the 450, it will cool the salon and rear compartment so cold in the summer that it is uncomfortable.

Where cost is a controlling factor, our dealer is installing some Webasto A/C units with the understanding that there is no local servicer, so if there is a board or compressor failure, it may mean replacing the unit. But, the oldest one they installed is 4 years old in a 340DA and it still runs fine. They sell 1 Webasto to every 4 Marine Air units in Sea Rays because A/C's just don't last long here.

Not on point, but hope it helps........

Frank,

Assuming you had the SMX control panel, did you have to change the panel? Did you need to run new wires or harness to the new panel? Not a big deal on my boat since the panel is right above the AC unit under the salon couch. Just concerned that it is a different dimension from the SMX panel.

With respect to the power, air venting and water connections, is it plug and play or will I need to make changes?

Did you install yourself or have someone install it?

Thanks,

Jeff

P.S. I have a foot of snow to deal with tomorrow am. Enjoy the warm weather!

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

Jeff,

The new unit comes with a new panel. It is the same size as the old one and the cable is like a Cat5 cable....it takes longer to get the cushions off the couch than it does to run the cable on the 410/450. For the most part the 2 units are identical in size and hook up so everything is plug and play, except the mounting screws had to be filled and redrilled in a slightly different location. I did everything but lifting the old unit out myself.......I was dealing with recuperation from a shoulder injury at the time.

The hardest part of the whole job was writing the check for the new A/C.

It will be worth the $2,000+ to not hear that old unit kick on and off. My daughters and sleep over guests will thank me too. My forward smaller AC is running ok "so far" and it is very quiet, so if it ain't broke .......

I will most likely order the unit by the weekend.

Thanks a lot Frank!

It's a vector turbo. I am replacing a 12,000 btu, but may go bigger if generator and power panel can handle bigger..

That's funny, my forward AC is quieter than the one in the salon as well.

Think about it........the forward unit is buried under a foam mattress and bedding and is behind some cabinetry. Wait until the compressor is on its last legs and it too will sound like a monkey beating on a trash can when it cycles.

Anyone replace the batteries on your 410 recently? I'm due and just looking for suggestions on what to replace with. I saw a thread on Duracells from Sams Club posted elsewhere in this forum. Any suggestions?

Believe it or not I got my batteries at Walmart and they have revealed service life as good as any other except for the ultra premium batteries like Trojan or Surrett. They are a bit cheaper than most others; I think that is mostly due to the quantity of lead in the plates. The life of any battery no matter the type or cost is dependent upon the way they are treated and the environment they are subjected to. The key to battery value is modern three or four stage charging and always on charge, fluid maintenance (if wet cell), connected wiring that is clean and well maintained, preventing exposure to extreme high or low environmental temperatures and engine alternators that are verified straight line DC output. If the above is achieved, no matter the battery, you will get good service. So, I assume that a good service life from batteries is between 5 and 7 years provided I take care of them. As a result, I don't really spend a lot on the batteries but rather spend taking care of them and it works well for me.

Thanks for the comments on the batteries, guys. Mine are actually the ORIGINAL batteries from 2001--PO never changed them and they haven't failed me yet (though the PO hardly used this boat as well). Still, I figure its time to get out ahead of this and change them up before Spring launch.

Bryan,

I had great experience with the Sears Platinum Marine AGMs on my 340 and Optima Blue Tops on my 410. All were GRP 31s.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I wanted a bit more capacity so I swapped out the house side with Trojan J185H and the other side with group 31. My generator is an Optima. The J185H is 128 lbs so they are tough to get in and out but they have a ton of amp hours and are 12V.

OK...........I am now having to replace my port windshield wiper motor. It appears to be behind the valence panel over the galley. Has anyone removed this panel? There has to be a trick. Is it Christmas tree fasteners or screws? Any help would be appreciated.

There is a small access panel over the sink. It's right in the headliner.

In the 400, there does not appear to be a separate access panel. The valance contains the speaker and lighting and it appears that the wiper motor must be behind this valance however it doesn't seem like it is directly behind the speaker.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I'm new to this website, as I'm shopping for a 2002 EC with Cummins diesels. I have a post somewhere in these threads about the noise level at the helm. I thought I'd try this thread as it seems particular to DAs and ECs. Does anyone know the decibels at the helm at cruise speed?
I really don't know where this post would go.
Thanks, Carl

Try to stay away from double posting. It works better for you...

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

Has anyone had to replace the black vinyl screw cover (rubber) along the windshield of their 410DA? I need to do so and I'm confused as to which part to order. When I call Sea Ray, they will only give me the part # of the entire windshield assembly--not just the black vinyl. When I call Taylor Made (who made it), they tell me they can not give me the part # because they can't sell directly to me--I have to go through a Sea Ray dealer. The Sea Ray dealer's price is about twice what I know I can get it from Taylor Made for. My problem is this--I don't know which part # I need. My buddy has a 2004 Sea Ray 360DA and he requires part # 8349040 shown below. However, I don't know if I need that same part or if I need something different. When I pull the vinyl out of the windshield track, it looks the same but I'm not 100% sure if it is a direct replacement.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
