410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread**

They’re in, thanks Dave @dtfeld

This is Idle. I know 700 is the target, should I bother adjusting for the 20rpm on the starboard side? Go figure that engine is 50rpm lower than port at WOT but those two should be independent of each other as long as the arm hits the wot plate right?

edit: looks like the target warm idle is 750 rpm. We seem to be low. Looking in the service manual now but I suspect this is a call to cat to adjust

During a trip with our friends I had a slight mishap during a rafting tie up and my buddies Carver. Needless to say he won. I now have 2 bent stanchions on my starboard side that need to be repaired. I have a local guy that will do the work. I will be unbolting them so he can remove and repair then weld back in place. My question is has anybody on the 410 Express removed any of the bolts to rebed them and if so where did you access them from inside. I'm looking at the 3rd from the aft and the forward one where the cable attaches. I've started exploring and so far do not see an easy way to them.

Should be able to access thru the cabinets in starboard side if you have a radio there that all comes out.

There is a write up on here (seach in Diesel Engine threads) on how to adjust the idle for the CAT engines. Its not very difficult, and bringing CAT out will be expensive.

perfect, will do. It makes a pretty significant difference in how smooth they idle when I pull it up to 705 or so.

What do you guys idle the 3126's at, 700 or 750? I see both refeerenced on boatdiesel but 750 seems high

I believe 750 is the number. It will idle below this until warm and will give good shifting and idle speed in gear.

Thanks Dave. I found the process, looks easy enough to do so I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Found where I had to gain access to for the aft stanchion. Had to remove the mirror and can just barely reach the bolts. I also can remove the curved panel just aft of the mirror but would have to also remove an A/C junction box that's attached to it. Either way the mirror comes out first. Now onto the forward one.

Success! So much smoother at idle now and I would expect the dock handling to be even better than whole at 685. Thanks all!

Gonna stay on the hook tomorrow, not worried about actually draining all batteries since the Genny is separate from both engine banks but just curious what kind of house bank runtime you all see normally? We’d have the big fridge and cockpit fridge on, cabin lights are all LED now, very few other DC loads. It has the original nevercold fridge and I can’t imagine they’re terribly efficient

More than one time I've gone two nights without running the gen with no problems. Two fridges, moderate radio use, lights, water pump, etc. Back when I had an inop generator we'd pack more in a cooler when we knew we'd be stretching our batteries a bit. And by more in the cooler I mean beer. Opening the fridge every time I needed a beer was, well, not the best use of batteries. Especially with as much beer as I tend to drink whilst on the hook :)

The big qualifier is your battery condition. Good batteries should have no problem with a couple nights. One bad battery and things start getting weird in a hurry...

C'mon guys you know better than to discharge a lead acid battery to less than 10.8 volts right? That is unless your pocketbook affords new batteries every season..... You will permanently damage the battery if discharged below 10.8 volts so if you are going to do deep discharging as you are discussing then get a quality battery monitor.

Thanks guys. They’re new last year so I’m sure it’s fine just was wondering what you’re mileage has been

Regarding the 3126 idle speed, I’m getting some conflicting opinions from various sources. I see mention of 700-750 here and boat diesel, the cat dealer says 650, and Dave at boat diesel commented and said 650 is fine if it’s smooth.

what do you guys have them idle at? Any concern with tranny wear at a higher idle like 750?
