40 sedan bridge forum

Hello CSR 400DB owners,
It has taken me a few week to get through all the posts but the end is near! Thank you all for your time and effort for all the useful informative information - some posts have saved me hours of maintenance time.
I have a question regarding diesel fuel tank level senders as mine are inaccurate - 350l fill in P tank = 1/4 increase on the gauge, 175 in the S tank = over 1/2 increase on the gauge.
Has anyone installed Ultrasonic or any other level gauges?

Z.

Access ports do exist in the floor over the senders. Good chance you can get the old one out. Have you ruled out the guages?

G'day Paul,
Thanks for your reply mate. I've had both senders out and they appear to function, when I next get to the boat I will connect a meter and check the resistance through the travel range of the arm.

The gauges maybe the problem as the tacho on the STBD jumps around a bit, and indicates a little higher then settles down when tapped.

A mate has sight glasses in his Caribbean 40 an they are worth their weight in gold!

I'm still chasing if anyone has tried the ultrasonic level gauges? I would like to install the flow scans but find the outlay excessive.

Z

Due to he baffles built into the tank design, ultrasonic senders tend to be unreliable in a Sea Ray with Florida Marine tanks. At one time, Florida Marine sold a floating puck sender that is much better and more reliable than the swinging arm type. I've had them for 10+ years.......

Well, it is time to move on. I sold my 400DB. We are working on a deal for a Carver. I have enjoyed CSR. The help and information I have gotten has been invaluable. To Frank Webster, thank you very much. I joined the Carver site, but, it appears that nobody really uses it. So long!

Mike,

Glad to have been of some help. Stop by for a visit the next time you guys are down our way. I'm still here if I can help you, but don't know much about Carvers and what I do know isn't pretty.

HIDDEN FRESH WATER LEAK. We were down at the boat yesterday getting her ready for the season and now have a new emergency project, don't you love those! We have a 2001 400DB and after topping up the water tank and turning on the pumps we could hear what sounded like a tap running behind the fridge in the galley. After confirming all taps and showers in both heads, galley, both fresh water wash downs fore and aft, cockpit shower, engine room tap and hot water heater tap were all securely closed, we could still hear it running. Both bilge pumps in the ER were dry, but the aft section of the forward bilge area (underneath the starboard VIP bunk) was filling up with water and activating the forward bilge. Like I said, the running water noise, and it sounds like an open tap not the usually "hiss" or "drip" of a small leak, is coming from behind the fridge area. the water is then seemingly finding its way underneath the galley floor hold somehow (which is also dry), underneath the area under the galley steps where the rear AC unit is (also dry), and then filling up some hidden compartment that is overflowing into the forward bilge area (right where the forward bilge pump is) through a hole cutout where both water lines enter that area and make their way forward to the sump box area (also dry). Its running so fast that the water pump never shuts off, and then continues to flow in even when it is off. We've drained all of the water from the boat until we can rectify the issue as I am not a fan of water filling up hidden, unaccessible compartments! My guess is there is an issue with/at master shower connection but can't find an access panel for that. Can someone tell me if it is behind the fridge? Has anyone seen it or taken a pic of it? How do you remove the fridge? I know, so many questions but I didn't sleep well last night...
Any help, thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Yes, access to shower fittings is behind the fridge. I replaced my fridge last year, but didn't get any pics of what's back there (should have).
I just looked before typing this, and if you remove the velcro access cover in the lower left corner of the cabinet under the stove, use a flashlight
and you may be able to see the shower fittings about have way up the bulkhead on the far side of the fridge. I can see mine past my vitrifrigo fridge,
I can't confirm the norcold is the same, but anyway, that's where they are. The moulding under the convection oven/above the fridge pulls off. It is held
on with christmas tree clips. Be as carefull as you can, I was able to get them all off with breaking only one. Remove the trim from around the Norcold and
flange screws are exposed remove and pull fridge out. Good luck

Second Question...any idea on how to also access the tee-off for the galley faucets from the mainline after it penetrates the engine room bulkhead? Parts books says that is the first immediate connection before the line continues on to both heads and anchor wash down. I don't think that is where my leak is but it might lead me to the area where the water is collecting...

Lift the couch back cushion straight up and off, then stick your head in there, carefull, don't get stuck, look down to the left and you will see the water lines coming up to the sink. That's all I know about that, haven't taken anything apart to work in there....yet

thanks again!

ND, the fittings that tee to the galley sink are under the guest stateroom bunk just in front of the forward bilge. The are against the stringer just port of the aft vacuflush unit. They are 22mm to 15mm tees. Mine were both leaking when i bought the boat several years ago.

Well after removing the fridge and accessing the Master shower fittings I discovered that my cold water fitting had literally blown apart. Once I source some new fittings, install and test then I can reinstall my fridge. After which I can then remove the steps to the galley and try to find a way to drain/siphon/suck the water that has collected in a hidden compartment next to my forward bilge, underneath the area where the rear AC is located. Thanks for the help and instructions on removing the fridge, I'm positive it saved a lot of undue frustration and possible needless extra repairs.

Thanks Bill, good to know.

I'm getting them through Western Marine

I keep a few feet of extra line and some assorted fittings on board, also from freshwatersystems.com

Lol, yes Searay a US built boat comes with Metric water fittings. I live in Canada, a metric country, but I can only buy the same fittings in Imperial sizes at the major hardware stores, go figure. I needed to special order them. Word to the wise, if you try to substitute the imperial for metric they may leak.

Public Information Notice:
So in correcting my fresh water leak from my failed master head shower fittings, this is what I found out...the water that leaked from the master head shower fittings located behind the galley fridge ( and I would suspect it might be the same from a possible leak in the galley sink fittings ) does not immediately find its way to the forward sump/bilge area, as you would expect. Nor can it flow back to the aft bilge area in the ER due to the engine room bulkhead. Instead, it flows into a hidden, non accessible space just aft of the galley floor hold where it steps up next to the rear AC unit. My water collected in there until the level came up high enough (at least 6-8") before spilling over into the rear of the fwd sump/bilge area next to the bilge pump, through a small access hole cut to accommodate the galley sink water lines after they tee off from the main lines in the fwd bilge area. Not an optimal design in my opinion. I sucked and siphoned about 3-4 gallons of water through that small access hole which would have sat and sloshed around in there until it evaporated, which who knows how long that would of taken. Has anyone accessed that area by cutting an access hole they might want to share?
