40 sedan bridge forum

If this is what you are talking about, the only brass thing is the ring under the handle. The handle and its round plate are chrome.

Great, thanks, I was referring to the plate that lines up to the strike plate in the door jam, that the striker/latch thingy pokes through. Has four screws in it. Looks to be brass coloured in your photo?

It's chrome. Although on mine appears much of the chrome has worn down to kind of a matte stainless look.

Hello owners,

I have recently acquired a 1998 400DB and am making my way through the various systems. My first question to this forum is about the Teleflex Hydraulic Steering. What is the best/proper method for purging or ensuring I have adequate fluid level?

Thank you,

I recall a post for dying canvas a different color. I replaced the canvas on the bridge from green to black. I still have the green canvas enclosure for the cockpit and want to dye it black.

Milestone, I believe you are referring to my posts on painting the canvas. The idea is that it is the same as painting a sail. PM me if you want to talk about techniques i figur d out along the way.

Thank you,

IB,

I use automatic transmission fluid to fill mine. It has a fill hole on top of the steering column. You will need to turn the steering wheel all the way from side to side to work the Pistons and make sure the air is expelled from the system. Mine is about 8 turns from side to side. Each time I take the boat out I make sure I get a good side to side "stop". If not, then fluid is needed. If you do not have enough fluid you can turn and turn and nothing is happening. Hope this helps.

Thank you - so the key signal is that I get a lock to lock steering feel. If there were insufficient fluid or air I would have the ability to continue Turing the wheel beyond the standard 8 turns in one direction or the other.

Thanks!

Correct. Don't hold me to the 8 turns exactly, but you get he idea. If you continue to have issues, I believe teleflex will rebuild the unit for you.

Finally got a bit of free time and made it to the boat.

The new radar mount was waiting for me. After unpacking:

Then a few more hours and:

A huge thanks to Battlewagonmounts.com for the superior work and service. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to post my custom mount for my new Flir unit.

Looks very sharp!

Here is a shot of the MFD 8 Navnet 3D:

I only got to mess around with for about 20 mins today. Will be back at the boat in 2 weeks and will get it fine tuned. But I must say, straight out of the box, it's the best radar image and tracking I have owned.

Nice, this is a setup I'm considering. Do you mind sharing what your inve$tment was for the furuno, pedestal and Navnet? You can PM me too.

I am thinking about putting SeaDek (Faux Teak attern) on my swim platform and helm. Has anybody ever used this product? I like the way it looks on their website. I have talked to the customer service rep and they are sending me a template to measure my boat. It is expensive and "on the fence" about whether it is worth it. I have removed the carpet on my 40 sedan bridge and looking for something new and different.

I am open to opinions.....and the good or bad of SeaDek. I have tried to upload a picture and cannot get it to load. The website is seadek.com

Not at all.

MFD 8 and 24" Radome were +/-$2900 on sale late last year. The new (custom) stainless radome mount was $850. Two things were custom on this mount, one I raised the height to 40" and two, I had a custom plate machined to match my existing hinge. I believe without those two modifications the mount is closer to $650 in polished stainless. I did the install myself in about 7 hours. I did already have NMEA 2000 backbone in place, so that part was quick and simple. Once the radome and new mount were installed, the hardest part was of course running the cable from the arch to the helm. I will say, Furuno has a great initial setup screen and automated programming. Very, very simple.

This is the third radar I have installed on this boat. In my very short time with it, by far the best out of the box. Looking forward to June when we head towards Alaska this year. I should be able to get a pretty good feel for how this unit works during the +/- 1,000 miles planned.

Looks like the MFD8 is mounted above your NSS12. How does the MFD8 screen size feel visually from sitting at the helm? Not too small?

I had a Northstar 6100 where the Furuno is now. That screen was only and inch wider and a half inch taller. So, its functional for me. I use the NSS 12 for most of the chart/navigation and the Furuno will be dedicated to the radar for the most part. It works well for me.

Squirrel- your freshwater tank might need to have the sensors cleaned. Sounds like they are stuck. Your SMX might be an issue with the the board. Not sure.

So how does one go about cleaning the freshwater tank sensors? I replaced the SMI II control board and the fan still runs at full speed.

Thanks. Reason I asked was I am going to put a 8-10" screen in the same spot.

Squirrel- if your fan is stuck on full, issue sounds like the board, not the controller. Mine did the same thing and luckily we had a spare parts unit. Changed out the board and worked perfect. An A/C board is about 600-800$ not worth it typically.
