40 sedan bridge forum

Hi all. We just bought a 2000 400db last week. Spent the last 7 days on her learning a lot. Has anyone updated the Clarion radio? We would like to listen to our iPad tunes. We noticed some pooling of water on the port side rear deck next to the door to the swim platform, any ideas what might be causing the problem? Many great ideas on this forum!

Congrats on your purchase! I updated the Clarion radio with a new Clarion head unit and remote. The upgrade was very straight forward. The most time consuming part of the job was running the new remote cable from the cabin to the bridge as the old remote cable had a different pin configuration than the new remote.

Is your drain flowing freely in the corner by the door?

Mine does the same thing. Wish they had put a drain on each side. So far I have not come up with a solution.

Same here. If the boat lists to the port side water will not drain out the transom door. A balanced load will minimize the pooling.

Congrats on the boat and welcome to the group.

Port fuel fill overflow line disconnected?

Every so often, diesel would be in my bilge. I believe I have narrowed it to fueling and believe the overflow line is not connected, thus pumping into bilge when full. Anyone else having this or similar issue? Can't figure anything else unless the fuel cell is leaking.

More likely cause is the fuel fill hose. First check the hose clamps to be sure they are tight then look for drips off the underside of the hose, in a low spot, after fueling where the hose has a crack in it. These boats don't have a fuel overflow, but they do have a vent line to allow air ito enter the tank to replace t he volume of fuel your burn. If the vent line were disconnected, you would have the constant odor of raw fuel in the bilge and cabin.

Thanks Frank. I'll look into that next weekend. I am dreading having to get into some tight spots on this one.....

The forward cabin head decided to stop working this weekend. Vacuum stopped working. Holding tank is empty; mid cabin head works fine, vacuum pump works fine on mid cabin head. We tried a snake, plunger and pressure hose to no avail. Any other ideas? 2000 40db.

There are two separate pumps, one for each head. Can you hear the pump running - is it simply not building a vacuum?

The good news is that the pumps can be rebuilt. You can access them in second stateroom under the bunk closest to the galley.

Any thoughts on hauling (trucking) a 40 sedan bridge? How is the arch removed? Is the boat to tall? How tall is the boat from the rudders - prop shafts, to the bridge? Thanks!!!

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have not actually had my boat transported. But, I have researched the issue pretty well, spoken with Sea Ray etc. Here is what I have been told (I am prepared to be proven wrong). The arch, wind screen, helm and the bridge seating have to be removed to be hauled over the road. If you have access to facilities that are familiar with Sea Ray's and their construction process, this is not that big of a deal. If you call Sea Ray with the HIN number, they will send you a detailed sheet on removal and replacement of the components.

Thanks for the info.!!!

I would like to say thanks for the immense amount of info here on the forums. I think I've read 10000 posts lol! My wife and I have stumbled across a 1999 400 sedan bridge with 400 hours on gassers, triple stateroom model, allways freshwater on lake Michigan. The boat needs some major tlc, freshening up, which we are quite capable of. I would like to ask those that actually own or owned this boat in gas for their thoughts about an $80k price tag. Assuming survey and motors check out. I have read a lot of negativity with regards to gas in this boat, both performance and resale. Also if anyone with a 3 stateroom layout can chime in on the pros and cons after having owned one for a while that would be interesting. We have a 3 year old, always boat with friends, will spend a lot of time at dock and put about 50-80 hours topps each year for the forseable future. Staying on lake Michigan. Any thoughts on resalability in 5 or 10 years? Thanks again for any light you could shed on our decision. cdog

Cdog,

It's likely you will get a lot of different opinions on gas vs. diesel. I believe all are very valid so it depends on how you like to boat, distances traveled etc,. With that said, in 5-10 years that 14-year old boat will be 20+ years old. I purchased mine this year and just love it. It fits our boating needs perfectly and it performs the way we like to boat. I've never really given much thought about resale due to the fact the boat was 15 years old when we bought her. I am on a river system, diesel is harder to find and the long trips we take do not justify diesel....at least for me. Freshwater boats in this area (under $150,000) tend to sell rather well in a strong economy regardless if they're gas or diesel. Likely a different story on the Great Lakes or in salt water. Interestingly, my boat came from Lake St. Clair where she had spent her entire life. $80,000 sounds like a very good price for a 1999 but, as always, a complete survey is a must!
Good Luck, they are great boats!

randerson, what layout do you have? 2 or 3 stateroom? Do you, as an owner, feel the gassers are up to par for your usage? The seller, which has been too honest quite frankly hence the ballpark figure, feels the gas motors have done him very well, the catastrophic diesel storys have me a bit concerned, gas motors not so much. cdog

Was curious if anyone has changed out the float on the starboard tank on their 400 sedan? Whats involved? anyone know where I can buy the part? Parts manual says its 19.75inches. Do they sell this exact size or do I purchase one of these " for tanks 15-24 inches?

Also has anyone cleaned their diesel fuel tanks on this boat? I had it done two years ago but I wasn't their when they did it. Mexican diesel is nasty stuff.

Thks in advance.

Cdog,

We have the 2 stateroom layout (our kids are adults), we didn't want the less space the 3 stateroom layout offers. The gassers are great for us, She cruises nicely at 19-20 knots at 3600 RPM's depending on load. Full fuel and water make her a little stern heavy but that's true with the diesels too. You may want to reach out to "Bugaboo", he is a CSR member and has posted many YouTube videos about his boat. Incidentally he is on the Great Lakes so he may be able to add to the gasser opinion. I suggest sending him a PM, not sure how often he checks this site. I would love to see his opinion posted here as well.

First post here as a 400DB owner. We have had the boat about a month, and I am sorry it took so long to post. Brought her home to lake Erie from upstate NY on a nice 9 day vacation. We had a great time and it was great to be able to be traveling on the boat to get acquainted with it. Looking forward to learning and sharing here. A tip of the cap to Frank (fwebster) and Ray (carver370) for their answers to a few questions during the decision process.
