38 DA Gas or Diesel

Dom,
That puts things in perspective. I, even in my little row boat, would easily recoup $325/month in fuel cost and that's just figuring the price difference at the pump here, not accounting for the fact that I will burn almost half as much fuel too.

Again, I'm not looking for a fight. The way the world works is what it is. I wouldn't make too much fun of Obama as he is the only candidate that will set things straight and he will be our next President. This is not the place to discuss politics.

The only point I was trying to make was people shouldn't be beat up because they like to have a gas boat. Putting a diesel in a Sea Ray is like putting a 60 inch plasma in a mobile home. Sea Rays are party boats and not meant for bermuda crossings.

Sourcecode, Thanks for Trolling, But it's a little old now.

Geez- you really are an expert on everything aren't you? Politics, Sea Rays, ocean crossings, diesels, AND the way the world works. If Obama can 'fix' whatever you think is wrong, then I think the problem is only perceived and not real. As for Sea Rays being only pretty, I'd suggest you take a look at my long and varied trip log. You've much to learn, but you're unlikely to learn it if you keep espousing such "knowledge". And thank you for showing up. You have been A LOT of fun ALL day. We've missed C-rock, but I think you'll take his place nicely. Keep it up and, by all means, PLEASE show up at BIH dressed for goth.... I'll pay your way.... that is if you're OK with accepting funds that I made by exploiting the little people.

Well it took a few pages but finally somebody made the observation...TT you beat me to the punch.

Oh yeah...buy the damned diesels. I had gassers in the 340 and now have the Cummins' in my 420 and what an incredible difference.

Dom, if I followed that correctly, you deduct your entire boat payment?

Yes...I didn't have an amortization schedule in front of me, and I figured the first few years were mostly interest anyways....it may be off by $25/month or so...but I think the point I was making is that it really doesn't cost more to own/run a diesel than a gas boat of equal size.

If you do the numbers on a slighltly used diesel, the BEST buy IMHO, then it's even more cost effective to buy diesel.

Just returned from Florida visiting relatives and saw several big plasma TV’s in mobile homes.

Also, looked at several used boats including some 38’s with gassers and oil burners. The price differential between the two engines is inconsistent but somewhere between 20 – 40K. For me the diesel would be a requirement for all the reasons previously posted but also because the next purchase would be for a boat that is made to go further than a weekend cruise. One consideration that I am unsure of is the resale in the Chesapeake Bay area. There is a reason virtually all boats under 40’ are ordered by the dealers with gassers, and that is this is what their customers will pay for. So, the issue becomes will the boaters in my area be willing to pay the additional cost for the diesel when it comes time to sell.

Jim:

The short answer is YES...the reason is in your own post...supply and demand....there will be less of them available in the used market.....

Dom, I have a schedule in front of me and the figures I see are different. If I were to pick a battle though, it would be to "moderate" (that term again) the statements about diesel TCO.

It works out great for lots of people. More power to 'em (literally). It also kicks some in their sorry butts. My dock neighbors began bankruptcy proceedings after believing that their diesel boat would be:

-cheaper to own than gas
-easier to sell than gas
-worth more at resale than gas
-faster than gas

In that case, none of those were true.

We've seen it here too. In the past 6 months or so, we've heard of two 380DA's being bought on the used market for less than the going price of gassers. That's awesome for the buyer and makes Dom's point about buying used, but that means that the poor PO lost his entire diesel investment, plus interest.

There are no guarantees, and regional market preferences should always be considered when making this kind of decision.

Dom,
Maybe, but the reason the supply is low is actually because of demand. In my area it seems a boat under 40’ with diesels is very rare, which makes the purchase somewhat more of a gamble.

But as they say in real estate, “There is a buyer for every house”.

I would think what really happened is that they began bankrupty proceedings because they over exteneded themselves....not because they had a diesel boat...especially not because they thought it would be faster than a gas boat...

For more than the "Asking" price of gassers is more like it...... by the way....I don't recall hearing from anyone here about acutally BUYING a gasser 380DA in the past 6 months....at any price...so what IS the "going" price for a gasser 380DA in the past 6 months?????

This question is often asked for the DAs of this size since I believe the 370 to 400 DAs are at the limit of being usable both for gassers(weight of the boat) and diesel(efficiency in a large boat). I have 7.4s in my 370 and I am happy with it. But I don't do a lot of hours per summer (around 50-60) and mainly quite short trips. If I was doing 125-150 hours + I would probably appreciate the fuel economy of the diesel and the torque they provide while doing long trips especially in heavy seas.

yep....maybe the only Sea Rays he saw were in magazines and Internet sites.

Do you guys take IOU’s? Right now with the falling dollar, they are better than cash.
