1982 36' Sea Ray Vanguard sportfisher, auto pilot, gps, everything
Engines
Twin 3208 turbo
Recently, I have been attempting to do research on my boat to see if it was a special order type boat since I never see any 36' sportfishers around though I do see plenty of the 39' sportfishers (same boat just 3' bigger cockpit).

I have an '83 340 SRV Sedan Bridge. Very similar boat as yours. I do not see much of them. I have never seen the sportfisher before. I'll post pics when the weather gets nicer.

Great pic by the way!

She's gorgeous! I thought I knew every SR model but never heard of Vanguard. Check page 28 of this PDF...

Who knew there were a whole line of Vanguards??

Are those Cats original or repower? I'd love to hear more about your boat! There are practically no older bridge SRs here on CSR.

Yes, the Cats are the original power plant on the vessel. I had no idea they made a 36' Sport fisher as well since I have had a 1981 34' Sport Fisher and a 30' express and neither were called a Vanguard.

I have to say this is one of the best riding boat I have ever owned in the past 25 years. Been in some pretty nasty seas with her and she recovered extremely well. I love the boat but my wife wants something "with more room" so I might be looking to sell her to find something bigger. Of course it will be another Sea Ray.

The 36 ft hull was the predecessor to the later 390 EC and sedans. Back then Sea Ray was not known for big boats and the 36 was not produced in vary large numbers. We still see a few of them down here on the Gulf Coast, but I have never heard the name Vanguard used for them.

Thanks, picture was taken from a 34' Sea Ray express (thus the wake) about 1/2 mile from Catalina Island last summer.

The 36' Sport Fisher must have been a low production model since I havent seen any in my area. What a great boat Sea Ray made thats for sure.

You and me both. I have the original owners manual stating that this vessel is in fact a "36' Vanguard Sedan Sport Fisher" I will try to attach the manual cover and ad it to my album. Great boat. Love the older Sea Ray boats and the classic lines.

I noticed in the catalog your boat has portlights port and stbd (from the interior shots) and yours does not. Did someone close them up?
And man does that thing have some beam! Almost 14', in a boat with a LOA < 40'. Catalog doesn't say but she's got to weigh in at upwards of 22K lbs.

No, as you can see from the owners manuel the hull does not have any port holes. Wish it did since it does get a bit dark in the V-berth (one of the wifes complaints). Yes, she is a "Fatty" with a 14' beam and weighing in at 23,000 pounds loaded which is why I love these older boats.

Interesting - the catalog link I posted above shows her with port lights. Could have been a design change that took effect later on.

Back then the larger boats were not high enough volume to be "production engineered". It isn't at all unusual to find boats of the same year and model from the mid 80's and back to be slightly different.

I had a late '88 390EC and there were a lot of items on it that were not on the '88 390 parts list.

Tried to open the link you attached on your previous post but could not get it to open. Will keep trying.

You need to download adobe reader first...
It's free and reliable...

Hope you can view it - nice catalog with all the boats SR made from that model year. Lotsa pix of yours.

Keeps telling me access prohibited even after downloading latest version of acrobat. Oh well Im not the sharpest tool in the shed with computers but will keep on trying.

There are still two of the t-tops on our lake. We had a high volume SR dealership in our town for quite a few years beginning in the 70's. We see these two boats every year--both t-tops. Connie Ray built lots of different designs in the 70s with venturi windshields and other sort of odd designs. Many did not survive into the 80s but you have to give him credit for trying. One of the 36s on our lake was next to a boat that caught fire. The heat damage to the hull was repaired and it is still sailing.

we had a 36 with T-Tops on the canal that we used to keep our 300 Weekender on, boat was mint. was always jealous of the beam on that boat.

Is anyone else unable to open the link to the pdf? That's odd?

Yes, Sea Ray is one of the very few builders that put wide beams on smaller boats. Thought the wider beam would make the wife happy but she still thinks boating is like camping. Oh well, more guys time on the water for me!!
