36 Sedan Bridge Owners

Glad to see some other 36DB Owners on CSR. We purchased ours in March of this year and have really enjoyed the boat this season. Some things to add to the design improvement list:
Split the battery banks to 2 on each side - no room to get to the back two
Move the freshwater pump to the engine room or add a sound box.
Provide a swing front (similar to the salon TV) to access the wiring behind. Had to rearrange the cable(s) into the splitter for the Glomex to get dockside Direct TV to work properly, lots of screws and time to get access.
Move trim tabs in a bit - pretty vulnerable when backing into the slip and the port side tends to "bite people when trying to get onto the ladder, or. move the ladder to the center of the swim deck.
Move the salon A/C unit up or into the engine room, hard to get to behind the port sofa.

I've found an ex-Sea Ray employee that makes swim platforms for most SR models. He's working on a prototype for the 36DB that should be ready for production early next year. It will be about 42" deep and full width. I'll post the info if anyone is interested.

Look forward to keeping up with the other 36DB Owners.

We're joining the club. We close on an '08 gas model tomorrow, and take delivery in 2 weeks. Anyone having problems with the E-Flex system? I understand they don't offer it anymore. I'm surprised to see that nobody mentioned it here.

Congrats on the upgrade. I have the same boat. The electronic system is really amazing. I just hope it stands up to the test of time. One thing my delivery captain did not show me was if you hold any of the light buttons in they act as dimmers, which is really cool. My understanding is that Searay went to this system because it saves a ton of weight on the boat. Unfortunatley I think because it is more expensive to install the 2009 models eliminated this system.

Good luck with the new boat and let me know if you have any questions once you take delivery.

Dan

Thanks for the tips Dan. I'm sure I will have some questions after I take delivery next week.

Kevin

Is it practical to use the bow for sunning? It looks like it is a little steep and the hatch would get in the way. Does anyone regularly use the bow for things other than docking? If not where do you mostly hang out onthe boat? On the bridge? Do you take down and stow the canvas and where?

We are looking at upgrading to a 2007 36 Sedan Bridge, anything we should be looking for when buying used? My biggest concern is the electronic power distribution system, anyone have problems with this? What is a fair deal for a used 07 with 8.1S gas motors? What is the price difference for freshwater vs salt, we live in Minnesota.

Thanks,

Kevin

You should be able to buy that boat for about $185000 to $200000 depending on engine hours and options. It is hard to put a monetary value on a boat that is freshwater compared to saltwater, but there is a difference. You really have to see both boats to come to a conclusion about the condition. Most freshwater boats this size are also kept under covered slips whereas most saltwater boats are left out in the open their entire lives. The exposure to the sun and elements is harder on the boat than the saltwater. I will never buy another "saltwater boat" again because of issues I had with getting the gelcoat back to like-new luster and all the stailess hardware was pitted from rust and corrosion. Also the canvas on the boat was ruined even though it was only 3 years old. That 3 year old boat looked like it was 10 years old even after I cleaned it up.

Where do you buy a freshwater boat in Hilton Head? Do you put them in salt water? What happens after your boat is in salt water for 3 years? It looks like you get a new boat.

A boat can last for a very long time and still look good in salt water. It just requires regular maintance. I'm always doing something on my new boat to keep it looking new, whether it be Plexus for the isinglass, Woody Wax for the stainless, 3M Cleaner Wax for the fiberglass, 303 for the canvas, weekly cleanings with boat soap. I get more enjoyment kicking back with a beer after I enjoy buffing it up.

Stainless on a Sea Ray will never get pitted and rusted if you use Woody Wax every month. If you have rust use Boeshield T-9 before you use Woody Wax.

The Canvas will stay looking new if you use Plexus every week, never fold your isinglass, never roll dirty isinglass, use 303 Fabric Guard every season, and clean with boat soap every week.

Most people are too lazy to do all this and that's why you have weathered boats after 3 years.

After handling/captaining countless boats for a nationwide boat finance/lending institution for the last 15 years, I have seen maybe 400 boats from both freshwater and saltwater and there simply is no comparison. My boating grounds are Hilton Head and a inland lake in Georgia. I enjoy boating from both locations on separate boats. My point I needed to make in my prior post was that once a boat has weathered it can never be brought back to like new condition. The regimen that you describe in your post is beyond what most boat owners are willing to do, especially on a larger bridge boat. Like you I really enjoy maintaing my boats but unlike most owners I have too much time on my hands.

Agreed, but in a search, one should not eliminate all salt boats, because they may pass up a gem. Imagine if someone in Hilton Head or Boston had to narrow their search for a 36DB in fresh water.

On the flip side, if a boat is not maintained,it doesn't matter if in salt or fresh, the ininglass, stainless, gelcoat, and canvas will be weathered.

I didn't mean to imply that you don't keep up your boat. I'm sorry if that's what came out my fingers as I typed the keyboard. Sorry for the "It looks like you get a new boat" comment. I was speaking more to kevinmc. You certainly have a storied histoy of boat ownership and I'm willing to bet money that yours were gems when you sold them.

Any pictures? Congrats on the new boat!

Hey guys...I've been toying with the idea of a 36 Sedan and wanted to get your thoughts/real life input. I would absolutely love to have a diesel but it's just not going to happen ($$$$). I expected the mileage of the 8.1's to be on the low side, but was still surprised when I called Sea Ray and got the real skinny; so surprised that I would not even consider this boat w/ gassers. The data they sent me shows .5 mpg at cruise!! Granted, boats are not economical no matter how you look at it, but WOW!!

Are you guys with the gassers seeing the same numbers?

I am somewhat biased, but if you can afford diesels, go diesels...Also, you need to know how you will use it

Wetpaint - Unless someone is willing to give up a diesel for the equivalent price of a gasser, it's not in the cards. I am really just inquiring about true fuel burn of the gassers.
