340 SUNDANCER THREAD

The pump is part of the control block, which is bolted to the back (forward facing end) of the transmission. You can remove it without pulling the trans......there is also a drive key and some small piston rings on the shaft - they'll become visible when the control block is removed. If this is your only problem, you won't have to pull the engine/trans.

Last year I kept losing fresh water from the water tank. I traced it to a leak on the port side T-connector behind the coaming. I tried using a basin wrench to tighten the connectors on the gray tubing, but it's leaking even worse now. Does anyone know how to take off the coaming to get to this connector? Thank You.

Fresh water system blockage

On our last outing, some slime out of my fresh water tank clogged my inline filter several times, and now the cold water side of the system seems to have a clog in in it (hot water flows, but not cold). I'm going to shock the fresh water tank, but any suggestions for removing the clog in the system would be appreciated - will blowing compressed air through the system work, or will I be creating more problems?

Re: Fresh water system blockage

If you have debris in your supply lines, adding pressure (water or air) won't help too much if your filters/screens are still installed on your faucets/fixtures. If you have that much junk floating around, I'm guessing each of your fixtures has it's screens clogged as well. I'd pull and clean each one and then run fresh water through the fixtures without the screens in them. Our '05 has a manifold that feeds each fixture and it appears to have a hose inlet on one side that could be used to flush it. I've never used it but perhaps that's what it's there for.

As for purging the tank if you are going to try to clean it, provided you can't get to the tank itself and do it without using your fresh water pump and water lines...... I'd definitely dis-connect the main supply line from the manifold and run it overboard somewhere and purge that way rather than bringing any debris through the rest of the lines and risking damaging the fixtures. Probably a good idea to also drain the water heater as I'm sure it's accumulated it's fair share of debris as well. Hopefully once you've done this you'll be free and clear.

For reference, the water tanks (at least on the '05's) are under the rear berth. Not terribly difficult to get to but I don't remember there being a significant amount of easy access aside from the fill/inlet and then the cap that holds the siphon fitting the pump draws off of.

Hope this helps!

Greetings, CSR. I've been wheeling and dealing on Sea Ray's for what feels like months now and I'm close to closing a deal. The survey came back and shows the rig I'm looking at has a factory installed hydraulic arch. I was going to ask the surveyor what the pumps were but he beat me to it. Has anyone heard of such a thing coming direct from Sea Ray? Would you guys be concerned about this? I honestly don't think I'll ever use such an option. It's got a certain amount of "neat" factor but I don't want future headaches either.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

i have been on this forum for several years and don't remember ever seeing a discussion about this option......i normally do not read the 'sport yacht' forum so maybe this was an option on the larger boats......sounds like someone needed additional headroom to clear a low bridge or train trestle so they figured out a way to lower the radar arch when needed....

it is kind of a neat feature as long as everything works properly...personally i would not pay any extra for the boat because it has this option since it sounds like you have no need for it....

i buy construction equipment and material handling equipment for a living....i tell all of the suppliers i deal with that i will not pay for any 'feature' they have on their equipment that is not of any benefit for the intended operation....some companies like to talk about all the 'bells and whistles' their equipment has but if they will never be used under normal circumstances why pay extra for them?....

So you can fold the arch forward for bridge clearance? Never heard of that option on a Sundancer, although most of the arches on the sport boats (SeaRay, Cobalt etc) do fold. But those are much smaller - it could very well have been added on, but pretty sure it was never a factory option.

I had the sea trial yesterday and can indeed confirm the arch folds. It's actuated by electric (linear) motors and not hydraulic. The motors are located in the storage locations immediately below the arch bottom on both sides. According to the prior owner this was installed at Sea Ray when he bought the boat (I am the second owner now). I only moved it an inch or so since the canvas is up. I will definitely take some photos next week and share. I thought it was quite unique myself and plan to never actually use it...

That would be very useful where we live! It would open up a whole slew of possibilities where one could live on waterfront in FL as we are plagued with low bridges . In fact I think one member on here had his arch done specifically like that to allow him to get behind his house. Often wish ours folded when I see nice waterfront homes which we just couldn't put the boat behind. Good luck with the new boat enjoy!

I'm looking at chartplotters. The space for it on the 340 seems too far left, and too horizontal to be seen from where I stand. Anyone mount elsewhere? Or just dont look at it that much to be an issue?
I have Navionics on my ipad, and just lean it against the gauges. It blocks some, but I can see where im going. I like the Raymarine E7, the Garmin 7 series looks cheap. Any thoughts good or bad on these 2?
Thanks
Bud

We have a Garmin 840xs on the left of the helm that replaced our C80 and a Garmin 741xs right in front of the helm on the stand that came with it which is easier to see when under way than the 840xs.
We like having two as we were out one night in the dark when the C80 broke!

Hi all I just had my offer accepted on a 2005 34 Sundancer 8.1.Can anyone offer any advice on what to focus on during the survey, any common issues with this model that may be problematic.Any feed back is appreciated Thanks

The standard placement has never been a problem for me... Most of the time I looking at where I am going...

If the boat had salt water exposure, make sure the exhaust manifolds are cast iron and NOT aluminum. If they are aluminum with salt water exposure at 10 years old they will certainly be at the end of their life. $5-10k job depending on who does it or $2,500 if you do it yourself.

I would use as a radar display as well, and it that case I would want to see it easier. In Narragansett bay around newport, it's littered with rocks, wrecks and other fun stuff. I use the chartplotter a good amount for position to these issues. I found some plotters have wifi link to ipad, maybe I will ram mount ipad up high to duplicate plotter view.

That's our issue too, need to use the Radar on both units and able to see the one in front easier as waters here are quite shallow. BTW the Garmin units are much more user friendly than Raymarine IMHO and personally don't think the 740xs looks that cheap:)

I'm the one who had my arch hinged to get it under a low bridge so I could keep it on our lift. SR did not do mine nor is it electric. The arch itself is perfectly weighted and take me (alone) about 45 seconds to lower or raise it. It's a nice feature for me but many most would not need it.

Thought it was you Perry but was not exactly sure. We keep thinking of moving on the water but those low bridges! If we had it done suspect it would have to be with electrical help:) Would you mind sending me a PM with an approx. idea of what the costs are as have no idea and it may be something to think about.....

Hi Brenda, I think it was around $4500 for everything. They had to re-wire the VHF, GPS, TV and mast light as well so alot went into it.
