300hp 3116 enough power for 97 40' Sundancer

Yes a good price, cat charges 1000.00 for an engine survey up here on the gold coast.

Where did you say you are from? I missed it.

Is that why they call it the gold coast? Only kidding...used to live in Huntington LI NY. Anyway, the boat is on the east coast of florida but will be cruised or hauled to Long Beach Island, NJ. I'm sure my local NJ Cat dealer would be higher also.

Youre probably right. I like Huntington, nice little harbor, to bad cocos shut down. Cruise the boat north yourself if you can its a nice trip, I'm coming home in April.

the electronics are not hard to use. hopefully, you have manuals. if not, i'm sur eyou can find them online.

i have newer, color stuff on my current boat, and will be going back to monochrome on my "new" boat, which is older than my current.

my instinct is to upgrade immediately. however, it is all functional, will let me navigate to where i need to be. as Frank said, there's no rush if it's all working now.

Ed:

When you bring your (hopefully) new boat upto LBI, Ransome Giles CAT out of Hammonton, NJ will be your most local CAT Authorized dealer. I just had a pair 3126TAs surveyed on the 410DA I purchased in December. MM paid for the services as part of my deal, but the cost was $900 for the survey and about $1000 for the 250 hour service. They sent two techs to the boat and spent the entire day in the bilge. We then did about a 45 minute sea trial at the end of the day...and the tech was in the bilge for that also....

Frank, Re your comments on Feb 4 Paragraph 2-- if you substituted a Cummuns, Volvo, Mann or MTU would you say your comments would still be valid? J

and, I think this is paragraph 2:

"The owners in our area who have had problems with the 3116/3126 engine are owners than do not maintain the engines according to Cat recommendations, those who run the engines hot, those that ignore regular and important service needs, and those who insist on running the engines at above rated rpms and loads for longer than specified. The guys who take care of the engines with routine service and preventitive maintenance and who do not run them for extended periods at more than 2400 rpm, which is the recommended cruise setting, just don't have problems.

The answer is generally yes, however, to qualify that answer, I don't know much, if anything, about MTU's, I know a little more about Volvos, even more about MAN's and Detroits, still more about Cummmins and, since I own them, I know more about Cats that the others. Cats and Cummins are the more prevalent engine makes found in Sea Rays, so I know more about them than the others.

Every engine maker specifies max rated rpms and load (i.e rpms at WOT) as well as recommended sustained cruise rpms. No diesel engine should be operated outside its recommended performance envelope. To regularly overload diesels or to run them hot is asking for trouble, no matter who's name is in the valve cover.

Every engine maker has a recommended maintenance schedule. Failing to follow it, or worse, failing to even read the engine owners manual, "cheaping out" on recommended service by deferring or skipping items on the maintenance schedule is, likewise, asking for trouble.

By way of clarification, "trouble" on a diesel engine usually has a huge dollar sign in front of the bad news. A remanned diesel engine can run $15-$25K, compared to $1800-$2400 for a gas engine.

Diesel engines can and frequently do run indefinitely without causing problems, but no diesel is bullet proof. Abuse anyone's engine and you will have problems.

I think that was a yes. If so, why are there so many more anecdotal tales about Cat 3116s and 3126s?
