290 sundancers 1994-midyear 97 "We need a thread"

Welcome. I stared a couple of years ago with the same year, same boat. this club is a fantastic resource for learning about your boat and about boating.

Heh ,Grand master, Whats wrong with the stock frame and canvas? Unless the PO changed it, I have the stock setup and it seems to work fine.

When the stock convertible top is deployed down to the top of the windshield you cant stand up at the helm and it cuts your visibility nearly in half. When its rolled back in "bimini" mode you can stand at the helm, but the tubing hits you right in the back of the head if you are taller than about 5'

I never have a need to use the convertible part to thats not an issue for me personally, but I prefer to stand while driving most of the time...especially at cruise speed, and one day i am going to break my neck if i get caought by an unexpected wave.

Seems to me that the top was not designed/intended to be used under normal operating conditions on this model....just my opinion.

But as i said, its really the only downside to this boat other than the tight engine room if you have twins & a genny, but thats understandable.

Ok, I guess i don't have the stock set up. I have Isinglass insets that connect to the forward Bimini top. Easy to see through and I can stand or sit while underway and see just fine. No head room issue at all and I'm 6 ft even with just the Bimini up.

Yeah, that was definately not the original set-up for the 94 or 95

Usually when I first open the cabin door. It has not been started in a day or two I still smell it. I just open a window and either I am getting used to the smell at that point or it goes away.

If you are 100% sure there's no leak, check your fuel tank vent line...maybe its come loose or is clogged? You should not be smelling fuel vapors in the cabin

GrandMaster - you're so right about the canvas framework. I've taken to removing the entire framework rather than battle with the craning neck/ no head room/ lack of visibility. Requires using a little more sunscreen, but worth it :)

FD, I dont blame you, but you know you can just fold it up/back against the arch in lieu of going through the hassle of removing it.

GM, I must be doing something wrong, because I can't get it to reach the arch when I try to fold it back. The framework that I'm folding back slides under the arch, by an inch or more, and I can't figure it out. Are there diagrams or anything for the framework/ canvas? It drives me nuts!

Just picked myself up a 94 290 with the twin 4.3 mercruisers and absolutely love this boat. Still have a ton to learn about the boat and boating in general. Also just joined the site

Only done it once just to see if I could figure it out and it was over a year ago, but if memory serves you just pull the pins on the pieces of the frame that attach to the top of the winshield and fold the whole thing up & back. My frame has straps that you secure around the frame legs to keep it together when its retracted.
