I've seen a 220 thread and a 240 thread but no 270 thread. How about it guys, I know you are out there. I am picking up a 2004 270 Sundeck in the next week or so and am very interested in what you'all think about your boats.

What mods have you made? :smt038
I think with the wakeboard tower the bimini definitely needs looking at. I will give some feedback in the next few weeks as I get MM and the local canvas shop looking at it.
My new (previously enjoyed boat) has the 496 Mag with 375 Hp Corsa Capt's call. I'm curious how bad the fuel dock experience is with this monster motor.:wow:
I am also interested in how loud this monster is with the exhaust diverted under water. On another post one of the guys said it was quite a bit louder with the Capt's call. I thought the whole idea was you could (select loud or quiet)
Anyway I will stop rambling on and hopefully some of you will continue the discussion.

Fuel cost will only be a problem if you keep it stiff armed. It'll do just as well as a 5.0 will do, up to the point the 5.0 can't push it anymore or has worn itself out trying. The 496 manages fuel very well but all big motors get an undeserved bad rap for burning more fuel.

I don't burn any more than I did with the stock 7.4 MPI and in fact, I burn less usually, because I don't run it as hard to run the same speeds. Once I straighten the elbow, I can watch the gauge start dropping. :smt089

I've got a 04 270 with tower ,496 Mag with 375 Hp Corsa Capt's call. love the boat great for boarding and tubing. Fuel is what it is 4 or 5 hour day of tubing & boarding $100. But it is all worth it to be with family and on water all day.

Many times I have admired your boat while cruising the net. I even watched your youtube video. I remember a lengthy thread about your build on the old board. Nice.
With my old 220 Sundeck 5.0L 260 Hp with a 50 gallon tank I could wakeboard a couple hours and cruise for a little, all and all just normal day on the lake and my full tank would last over a month of every saturday and sunday lake visits. With the 496 Mag and 85 gallons I'm hopeing to avoid the fuel dock and only seeing it once a month as well.

Any 270 Sundeck owners, what has been your top speed?

I had an 2004 with 496HO. I did alot of long cruising and ave out about 2.9mpg. I'm sure that could be cut in half if you are on the throttle all the time. My Corsa system was not much different than a boat without it. Even got some compliments as to how much it quieted down by guys at the marina. Best top end was over 58 w/3people and tanks half full. I could load it up and still get 52-53. Let the hull get dirty and that would drop down close to 50. Very nice boat and had no problems at all with it.

I have a 2003 SD270 with the HO (8.1 liter, 425hp, Corsa etc.). Just got it last season with about 109 hours on it and racked up 60 of my own in 5 weeks of almost-daily use.

You will love this boat if my experience is any guide. A true swiss-army knife of boats in my opinion. It works for water sports (more so for tubing and wakeboarding than skiing unless you fiddle with the trim tabs) and its stable and dry enough to handle 6 adults and 6 kids for a day on the water. If you do travel in open waters you will need to learn to keep the nose up to make sure you stay dry, but with proper attention, you can keep all occupants dry. It's a great day-anchor platform too. Drop the anchor near a beach, down the front and rear ladders, crank up the stereo and pop up the bimini and you can relax with friends for hours.

Amen to setting up a thread. I'm in.

As to your questions:

(1) Fuel consumption. I have been averaging about 3mpg with a mix of watersports and medium distance cruising (about 60 stat miles round trip) at an average of 28mph. I cruise at about 42 (3750 rpms) but the 28mph average includes departing and returning and all the idling for skiing. I did a longer distance cruise (about 185 stat miles round trip) with a speed average of 44mph (very calm early fall day on the Hudson) and averaged about 2.7mpg on that trip.

(2) Top speed. With a half tank and 4 people, I can run at 54mph at 4750rpm which is just shy of the 4800rpm redline. It will rev to 5000rpm where the top is about 57.5 on GPS with still current and wind. I ran a 59.5 with tail wind and a ripping tail current one day. I don't run at WOT for more than 2 minutes at a time, however. With the HO set up, I feel comfortable crusing between 42 and 46mph when conditions are appropriate. I am so used to this speed that if and when I upgrade, I'll need to find a speedy bigger boat. When I'm cruising at 25mph, I feel like I'm walking. This boat spoils you with power and stability.

(3) Captain's Call Sound. First off, be sure to observe the 3000rpm switching limit. If you switch above 3000, you can blow out the diverter valves. With it off (normal) the boat sounds just as it would without Corsa. With it on, it's pretty loud but only idling or on plane as the sound is muffled when the exhaust ports are obscured by water during a wake pull. Turning it on at a dock is just obnoxious, as it is pretty loud. I do believe that there is a slight performance pick up at heavy throttle with it on. Might just be my imagination.

As for the wakboard tower set up, I would be interested in doing the same. However, I don't think I want to monkey with the factory canvas or bimini set up as it works so well. I would love a tower install that left the canvas and bimini alone. Does anyone think this can be done?

My 270 has the tower with the attached small bimini. Last week the canvas guy and I looked it over and decided how to move forward. He will be adding another rail (1" SS) to the back and extending the canvas to cover the entire rear seating area. The rail had to be ordered and will be a couple more weeks before it comes in.
The problem with a full bimini on the 270 with tower is, the tower arches forward. When a wakeboard rope is connected the rope slopes down toward the water causing it to rub on the full bimini. What we did was hook up a rope in the parking lot, stretch it out and pretend I was getting ready to be pulled ( lowest point in the water ) and then pulled out the old measuring tape. We came up with 51" up from the fiberglass behind the rear seat, to the bottom of the bimini top.
Does anyone have easy access to your 270 to measure the full bimini measurement from the back fiberglass behind the rear seat to the underside of the bimini?

Thanks
Bob

New thoughts on the Wakeboard Tower issue.

Has anyone considered a wakeboard pylon?

Thought 1. What I was thinking of having custom fabricated is a standing bar (think the poles (or stanchons) that hold the velvet ropes (seat belt ropes today) at a movie theatre or airport cue.

I want the pole mounted below the snap line for the cover (which is on the top edge of the slope of the trunk) which means it could come out of the lower part of the sloping trunk area or be mounted right onto the center edge of the swim platform that is closest to the boat (furthest from the water) which meets the bottom edge of the sloped trunk.

I do not want to impede access to the transom door or create a hazard on the swim platform. If this pylon is centered on the swim platform and away from the water edge, it will actually be a good safety item as it could be held onto when loading/unloading onto the boat. Ideally it would be removable but if I have it machined nicely enough, I wouln't mind it being fixed in place.

Thought 2. Another idea is to retrofit a pylon into the rear table mount. Of course I would have the item properly engineered. If I do this one, I would absolutely want it removable and be able to use the table as well.

Anyone tried either of these? Anyone have any thoughts or better ideas?

Thanks,
Gregg

If you are dead set agains't the tower I think the pole idea is cool. All of the ones I have seen were either short and factory installed ( on wakeboarding specific boats ) or tall with straps connected to the bow some way. I always thought those were pretty corny.

I guess anything is possible if you want to spend the money and engineer one to look sharp and have the factory installed look.

MM is going to be working on my bimini mods next week, hopefully soon I can share some pic's.

Name Placement and Lettering Choices

Hi all 270SD fans.

I have finally picked out a name for my boat.

As far as I know, there are two main lettering choices: hand painted and vinyl lettering and graphics. Are there any other methods I am missing?

I am going today to my indoor storage hangar to take pictures of my stern and measure for lettering. I was wondering if anyone out there has an opinion on the best lettering or graphics options for our boats.

If anyone wants to post pics of their name placement on their SD, that would be great too.

On my 240SD I had them move the SR logo by the bilge vents and that is where they put the name. Works great even when the top is on it. I've seen some that the name is covered when the top is on. Home port is to the side in small letters.

I am new to the forum. I am in the process of purchasing a 2004 270 Sundeck with the 496/375 engine. The boat seems to be in great shape with only 96 hours on it. It is coming with an aluminum tandem axle trailer. Owner wants $44k for it. Does this sound in line with what it should cost now? I checked for comparable sales on Boat Trader and found them to be anywhere from 32K to 50K. It is a freshwater boat.

Any suggestions on what to look out for or check before making the purchase? I would think that you 270 owners would have some insight as to what common (If any) problems that I should check.
Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Great boat, lots of storage space, lots of cooler capacity and the little sleeping berth is loved by the kids. Where are you going to be running it?

I will be running it around central Ohio and Lake Erie. We also vacation at Lake George in upstate NY each summer and we will take it with us.

Fresh Water Washdown

Ok experts I need help. It seems that we have burned up the freshwater pump on our 270SD. I looked at the schematics from sea ray, and have the part number, but does anybody know where it is located? How hard is it to access? I can't get to it for another couple weeks, but any advice is appreciated. Thanks!!!

Not sure on the 270SD, but if it is like the 240SD is on the port side way in the back. Easiest thing is just replace the whole pump.
