270 Sundeck thread

I had an 2004 with 496HO. I did alot of long cruising and ave out about 2.9mpg. I'm sure that could be cut in half if you are on the throttle all the time. My Corsa system was not much different than a boat without it. Even got some compliments as to how much it quieted down by guys at the marina. Best top end was over 58 w/3people and tanks half full. I could load it up and still get 52-53. Let the hull get dirty and that would drop down close to 50. Very nice boat and had no problems at all with it.

Woody,
I don't mean to "hijack" this thread,
but I am wondering about my 270SLX with a 496MAG 375HP...
It should get up to 58+ as well, but I have only gotten it in the high 40's. I know this is not right.

Conditions were perfect. 2 People. Engine was trimmed up properly.... I can't figure it out?

Should I have the trim tabs so the bow is UP or so the bow is DOWN?!
-- I guess I need some clarification. But i'm not sure if that would make up for the 10mph...

Thanks in advance.

And 270Wakeboarder,
Good luck with everyone. Great boat you got there.

Bushway,
If you are looking for top in you should have no trim tabs (ie:all the way up) and trim with the outdrive to get wot RPMs. IMHO - You will not get in the upper 50s with a stock boat.

Ok when you say all the way up... do you mean bow all the way up?

Correct no trim tabs at all. All trim tabs do is create drag. If you are looking for top in speed you want as little drag as possible.

ok thanks.
I was told to have the bow as low as possible. so I'm confused. haha

Bushway, I did get 58mph with my 270SD sometimes but it was never anything you could bet money on. Water conditions, weight, wind, cleanliness of hull, etc can easily add or subtract a few mph off your top end. For all I know there could have been a tail wind every time I got in the upper 50’s. There is also a 50hp difference between the 496mag and 496ho. That’s not much but may have pushed my 270SD 1-2mph faster. Most of the time it performed as I described in that old post you found. If you’re expecting near 60 from yours I think you’re in for some disappointment. It takes horse power that you don’t have to consistently run 60mph with your boat. I’ve never been in or even looked at the 270SLX but I’m sure it’ll be a great boat for you, 50-54mph at WOT is still pretty fast.

My suggestions:
1) Read your operators manual.
2) Work your trim tab controls in each direction and literally look at the tabs so it’s clear to you when they’re up and when there down. Do the same with drive trim.
3) Go back and reread the trim tab and drive trim advice given by some of the posters here. Too keep it simple, trim tabs up, get it going wot, when it won’t go any faster start trimming the drive up a little at a time, you should hear a change, feel it, and see it on your speedometer and tachometer. Usually you would be doing some of these things at the same time but this way you can isolate drive trim and see its affect on your boats performance.
4) Try it again, if you can’t get over 50mph call your dealer and tell them what’s going on. If the problem isn’t you they need to know about it.

Anyone tell me what I should ask for my 270 SD on resale. It has about 120 hrs in great shape. I don't realy want to sell it but things are bad in my industry right now. Also what is the best way to sell it at a fair price.

Thanks

I offer $100. Sorry could not help myself.
You may want to do a quick check on boat trader or yatchworld to get a good feel for listing price. Do a quick search for sold price in the general form. I know one of the members has access to the sold data and they could give you info on what has sold. Sorry to hear you're having to sell. Being a Realtor I know how it feels. It has been a very interesting couple of years.

Hello, Just picked up a 2003 270SD with 120 hrs on the clock. It is at Lake of the Ozarks MO. So far it seems to be a great boat. I live north of Chicago so its a long run to go boating. (I also have a house down there). I am new to boating and this site is very informative. Thanks!
