260 Sundancer Thread.........Comments questions and answers

Westie,

1.Your carbon monoxide point........Why then, does the USCG approve the mounting of marine generators in the bilge but they do not approve portables? If they are without risk, don't you think the CG would endorse their use?

2. Vented fuel systems? ...Did you even read what I wrote? Explosive fumes in a boat are never good and portables vent their fuel systems inside the generator case, so where you store it, where you transport it, where you run it. etc. are all subject to collecting explosive fumes in lower places. The potential for gasoline fumes in the boat increases risk......hardly misleading

3. No-ignition protection on a device that produces 2KW of 120VAC current in a gasoline powered boat seems a little more important that your "misleading" dismissal.

4. You didn't seem to argue with the fact that connecting portables to the electrical system on a boat creates potentially dangerous shock hazard. So, do you just choose to ignore that risk when you fire up your portable ?

For me this portable generator discussion on CSR is about providing correct and accurate information to those who ask questions so they can make their own decisions. Any single point I raised may not be too risky, but you cannot look at it that way since all the risks are present all the time. Dismissing facts as misleading information does a disservice to those who want to know the risks.

Hello All,

Still on the fence with pulling trigger on 260DA 2007 vs. an older 2005 280DA.

For those of you that have had the 260DA with the listing issue upon planing, have you found that the market for the boat is soft at resale due to prospective buyers being afraid of the listing problem? If you traded the boat, did it hurt its trade value?

Thanks!

I cannot answer your question, but I can tell you this...We have had our 260DA for almost a year now and have put 50 hrs or so on it. I have read and researched the alleged listing issue. Personally, I have never had the problem. She comes up on plane and cruises 27mph at 3850rpms. We spend a lot of nights on the hook and travel fully loaded most of the time. This past Sunday, we took our first trip of the year with a minimal load as we only went for the day. The only difference in performance was a little quicker to plane and 1mph more at WOT. Rarely use the tabs and have never experienced the grief that some people complain
about. Good luck with your search.

I only experience the list in a strong crosswind then a quick push of the tabs and it's resolved, sure the wider beam on the 280 will be more stable but on my 260 it's not an issue.

Thanks for feedback Bennett, very helpful and encouraging! Salty Dog I believe your model year does not have the "listing reputation" that the '05-'08's seem to enjoy.

I have never owned a 260DA but I have been on and operated several in the 05-08 range and I know the listing issue you are talking about. The boat feels very "top heavy". It almost feels like the weight of the arch is too much for the beam of boat but it could be something else. I'm not sure if it would affect resale because most people either don't know the problem exists or some may not consider it a problem. There are certainly a ton of them out there. If you plan to do a lot of trailering, a 260 might be a better choice but if you plan to leave it in the water most of the time a 280 would be a much better pick in my opinion. You will get a much better ride and a surprising amount of additional room, moreso in the cabin. I think the 260 has a better seating arrangement in the cockpit but less space to move around.

It looks like you have an 03 260DA. The listing issue was seen on the 05-08 260DA

I had an '07 260 before my 320 and I experienced the listing issue the first day I had it. Once you get used to it, it's not a big deal though. Just as you take off and start coming on plane, you trim up the engine and it corrects the issue. It eventually becomes second nature.

As we all know, bigger boat bigger problems and with two engines, everything is doubled, but if you can afford the two engines, I'd probably go with the 280 due to the wider beam and ease of controlling at times with twin screws. Good luck

Thanks again for everyone's insight. I put the deposit down on the 2007 260DA and now have to scramble to find a surveyor! Has anyone added a seat cushion backrest to the starboard side rear lounge. There is a removable bottom cushion but no back. I'm contemplating making one. Wife says is uncomfortable for the person sitting in that spot.

Congrats on your purchase! Now take the time to read every post in this thread paying specific attention to the ones by Dave S. By reading his posts, I learned in short order how to handle my boat.

No one has ever spent any appreciable time sitting in that spot on my boat. The wife will use it to stretch her legs out sometimes, but that is about the extent of it. In fact, last year, we left it home and have just started taking it with us this year.

I've thought about the same thing for that spot. I just ordered this throw cushion I'm going to try out in that spot.

Smart idea! Please report back with how it works for you. I need to measure that spots width. I'm thinking of modifying a seat cushion back an using white HD Velcro so I can remove I quickly Looking forward to being a helpful, active contributor to this board as it has helped me a great deal.

I don't think you will like the SR throw cushion as a back support. I tried it on mine and didn't like it.

Dave

I'll share what I come up with. I have to get maximum seating out of that lounge and that spots got to be a backbreaker when underway.

Agreed. The biggest issue I've found with that spot isn't so much the lack of a back rest, but the fact that on a "full boat" you now have 3 sets of legs competing for space that is rather cramped with 2 sets of legs.

Ive got a seat back cushion there on my boat. It has two snaps at the top edge that hold it in place and allows you to flip it back onto the top of the fibreglass edge so its out of the way when you need to raise the engine hatch. I'll post some photos at the weekend. I guess it is simple but effective. Your canvas guy should be able to make up something similar without breaking the bank.

I agree, listing issue has never been annoying for me. We've had our 05 260DA for 6 seasons now and it never bothered me one bit. Yes if it is super windy it will list, but a quick tap on the tabs and she'll straighten right out.

Thanks Rohan, pictures of your seating setup would be great Sir!
