260 Sundancer Thread.........Comments questions and answers

All,
Thought you may be interested in something I did to my "water ride" this year. I put synthetic teak down on the swim platform and in the Head. I am also considering the cabin because of carpet "wet issues" that can happen with this model of dancer.

I am having one issue and wondering if you guys have seen this before. When I use my Windless my engine is bogging down and if I forget to switch it off when on the wire the battery(s) will be dead in just over an hour.

Sounds like time for new batteries, they can't provide the amperage.

We're thinking about doing an overnighter on the boat this weekend. Anyone else have to pop ibuprofen before, during and after sleeping in the V berth?

I want to lay down a memory foam topper to ease the aches and pains; I've read reviews online and it seems that even a 1.5" thick topper makes a big difference.

I'm going to make a Walmart run to see if I can't pick one up but I can't get down to the boat before I head out tomorrow to take measurements.

Does anyone know what the widest port to starboard dimension is in the 260 V berth?

A queen topper is only 60" wide but a King is 76".

Steve, go with the king size topper, I tried the same on my 2006 with a queen size and ran out of foam to complete the job. There's not much price difference between the king and queen, but it's an extra 100+ when you have to buy another twin size to finish the job. Also, I used 3" foam which makes for a great night's sleep, but it's a bit of a pain to get the small closet door open due to clearance.

I should probably note that I cut up the foam to reupholster the existing cushions, not just laying it over the top of the existing cushions... seems like that might cramp up the V-berth even more with all the extra foam all over the place.

Chuck thanks. That was one of my thoughts however just wanted to check before dragging the tools down and doing load tests on the batteries. Just thought I ask (my first post) if the motors or something else in the Windless system could create a large pull. For example bushing going out in the motor. The system mods I have on this dancer add up, so the slightest changes in electrical/amp usage can show up a little earlier than stock configurations.

All - I really like some of the mods you guys made to your boats. I am planning out my project schedule now thanks to the post on this thread. First, is to create a place for the cockpit table! I hate that Sea Ray really did have place to store it. Thanks to Dave S. for creating this thread! And Dave, I need to put in down at Lake W. I am up river from you at Mt. Island Lake.

Did anyone ever discover the water in the bilge with a heavy load or a lot of people on board? I think I may have finally discovered my leak. I have experience typical leaks (rub rail, bilge vents, portholes, etc.) on our model of DA but the heavy load (that is what I call a lot of people on-board) leak has eluded me. Well, I think I finally discovered what is going on. The o-rings on the transducer fail and let a small amounts of water in bilge when the boat is off plane but plowing just before planing. Now with a lighter load they seem to hold during the plowing stage. I am going to try a new set of o-rings but my guess is that still may not fix the heavy load leak because I could have clearance issue between the transducer housing (thru-hull mount) and transducer. That is just a guess and hope the o-rings fix the issue, but I never have that kind of luck

You may be asking, how did I discover this? Well I have always been one to track down leaking issues on boats. I know that some just accept small amounts of water in the bilge as normal boating. However, after restoring a boat that required structural work because of a leaky bilge I now track down and repair every leak. So, I offered some of my friends a day on the lake. I place a small camera in the bilge and we went out for the day. It took a few different camera positions but finally I was able to see a small stream water coming up around the transducer during one the tests. Dropped a few guys off at the dock (they required more beer anyway) and tried it again...no leak. My first thought was "someone else take the helm I am celebrating I finally found my damn leak!!" I will let you know if the o-rings solve the problem. Has anyone else discover a different "heavy load leak?" Thanks...

Some 260DAs (like mine) and Chuck W's did not have sufficient caulking in the hull to deck joint around the back of the boat. Mine leaked like yours did for years with a heavy load but was dry at other times. I finally saw where the water was coming in on mine this year. Lake Wylie Marina removed the rub rail around the back and side of the boat and found one large area that did not have sufficient caulking. They contacted Sea Ray who agreed to repair it at no cost to me. The bilge has been dry ever since.

I suggest you look for wet areas around this joint. In my case the water was entering on the starboard side but the leak showed up at the transom. You could actually see a stream of water coming in. Another member on our Board (Kendall) who keeps his boat on Lake Wylie as well, had a major issue with his leaking when he was on an ocean run and his sump pump failed.:smt101 His leak was so bad the water was up to the pulley on his engine when he discovered it. I believe LWM fixed his leak as well.

I'd give the folks over there a call and see if they can look at yours.

Dave

Dave thanks for the information because I was wondering if others have discovered additional sources. The rub-rail on this boat was leaking like yours, Chuck W's, Kendall's and the others. I repaired it few months ago. As well as the bilge vents. The vents were leaking during rain storms. And not to mention a porthole in the cabin above the galley and the AC. I joking state "this boat thinks it is submarine" because of all the leaks I have repaired. It is funny because the only leak I ever had on 2000 260DA was a porthole, the sea gods must be making me pay my dues now.

This time it is the transducer because we were able to physically see the water coming in around it when under load via the camera I place in the bilge. I hope to replace the O-Rings today and maybe get test run. If not I will test this weekend with the "entire" family on board.

king! and we bought the 4" memory foam from overstock.
Makes the overnights pain free!

Love the teak.
Thinking about it for the swim platform and for the "wet carpet" area.

Call the guys at ttcustom marine. I used them to make the pad and then installed it myself. It is like installing tile in a house but just one big tile. It took me a little less than hour. They used my boat to make the templates for our model 260s. I also place a pad in the head but did not glue it down so that I can clean it. The guys at ttcustom put a backing on it so it does not move around

Also to give everyone an update on my little issue on the transducer leaking around the o-rings. We replaced them and as my normal luck would have it the repair made leak worse. I am working with the local Sea Ray dealer to determine if we can find the same size rings but slightly thicker to take up some of the gap. The issue is the rings still just has to fit groves in transducer so they stay in place and allow for removal of the transducer if required.

Can I ask why you need to replace the whole arm? I ask this because, if the reason is that the screw down knobs will not keep the hatch open, you can probably get by easier and cheaper by just replacing a few parts.

See this thread if it applies to you with focus on post #7- http://clubsearay.com/showthread.php/27938-Taylor-20x20-Hatch-Maintenance

Regardless, all these parts come from Taylor Made Systems http://www.taylormarine.com/prodcatalog/productcat.html

TAYLOR MADE reply my email No, our after marketdivision does not supply those, they are specific to the Sea Ray trapezoidhatches

Sea Ray note in part manual : NOTE ALL HATCH PARTS ORDER FROM DİRECT TAYLOR MADE""

what should i do ??

My buddy has an 07 DA. He is trying to find the source of a leak that results in wet cabin carpet. What are potential spots? Thinking the galley sink drain line at the through-hull, but can't seem to be able to get to it to check it (any idea how to get the partition out of the way?). The cabin bilge is dry.

Thanks,
Jim

I think it is time to contact Sea Ray customer service. Although a suprise to me, that particular hatch may be like the windshield glass assemblies, as in, the parts have to be ordered by Sea Ray but it is a special order for Sea Ray to order them from Taylor Made. Also, if this is the case, you will have to place the order through a Sea Ray dealer which may get complicated since you are in Turkey.

My advice would be to contact Sea ray customer service first. If you find out this is something they can indeed order for you special from TM, through a dealer, then you can start searching for a dealer to order through.

I use a 2 1/2 inch memory foam topper on the v berth - makes all the difference. We bought a queen size, laid it basically sideways across the berth and cut some excess from the foot which we used to fill a small gap in the memory foam further forward. As I am 6'2" the only way I can really stretch out on the v berth is to lie almost across the berth, head to port and feet into the corner next to the hanging locker. The Admiral can sqeeze in further forward. We find this much more comfortable than trying to lie fore and aft. I am just completing making up a timber frame to allow me to fill in that triangle between the in fill cushion on top of the table and the starboard side seat cushion which should stop me falling down there when the Admiral rolls over. Will post some pics of this shortly.
