I am going to purchase a new boat this season I am considering a 1999 260 DA with a 5.7 Carb Bravo II and a 1997 270 DA with a 7.4 Bravo III what are the differences between the boats and will the power be ok on the 260 with the 5.7

Hello
I can only wish you the best of luck in choosing the right boat for you!
We have a 270 da 1997 since 2008 with 7,4lx merc and bravo3 drive.
We are very happy with it,but we are only 2 adults living on it in the holidays!
And it is enough space to do so for about a week not more!
We get a maximum speed fully loaded of 33 knots and a cruising speed between 20-27 knots!

I was in a similar situation when I purchased my 270. One of the things which I really wanted though was twins and I haven't regretted it for a second. I'm getting a max speed of 41mph/36 knots and a cruising speed of 31-32mph/27 knots at 3200 RPMs. I just replaced a carb I was having issues with so expect that speed to go up (plus I've got bottom paint which reduces it some). I tow tubes and it has a good hole shot for a heavy boat - kids have a great time. I have had situations where I needed to move a few folks around to get on plane - but the weight was considerable and not common. The 4.3's have been reliable and good on fuel (for a boat..) - have ~200 hp each. I had a water impellor go out right after purchasing and being told it had been recently replaced and was able to get home on one engine. A couple of other issues have now been resolved but I was able to get home and back on the trailer with a single engine.

The negatives are your maintenance costs do go up as things are doubled with twins and you have less room to work in the engine room. It's all a trade-off - but thought I'd offer another viewpoint.

Is the 270 the wide beam or the SE model with the 8'-6" beam? we have the 270 with the 9'-4" beam and it really makes the boat feel a lot bigger! the two models also has a different cabin lay outs. the 270 is a lot bigger than the 270 indicates, our 270 with the swim platform measures out at 29'11", I found this out when I watched the guy measaure it when I had to have the bottom painted and had it waxed! These guys don't charge by what the sticker on the boat says!! We love the size of our boat and the dinete in the galley on the wide beam is a great adult area wheli the kids always pile into the Vee Berth to watch movies. Get one with a generator if you can!!

The 270 DA changed to the wider beam in 2000 officially, although there are some made in 1999 that have the new body layout. The 1997 should be the older layout. I think all of the older ones have bow pulpits that the new layout lacks. So the pulpit would be a quick way to see which one you are seeing.

I know nothing of the 260 with 5.7 but my 270 with 7.4 can take a while to get on plane with a full load (fuel, water, 4 adults, some number of childeren). With a lighter load it gets up out of the water fairly well. I am still playing with my 2 sets of props and trims to see which set I like better.
