240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

I found someone local here in Ft Myers, Fl to create my bow tent. It will look similar to askihms' but will have a zippered front end so we can get on and off the boat from the bow. It will also have the windows/screen on the port and starboard sides. I will post some photos when it is done.

Just a thought, but maybe you should suggest home keeping a pattern off what he comes up with. This way he can duplicate with ease and have mail orders. All he hast to do is supply snaps with it.

Hello All
I am new to the club, and very impressed with all the good information available here to a newbie.
I am in the market for a used 240 Sundeck, so this particular forum has been very informative.
I've been searching the various websites, and local (West Michigan) brokers, but I thought I'd cast a wider net by asking this group if anyone has information on potential sellers in the Great Lakes area.
My target would be a relatively newer model -- say 2007 or newer. I like the port side captain chair rather than the bench and I'd rather not have the ski tower. Other than that, I'm flexible.
If anyone out there has a lead for me or has some interest in selling (or just has some advice for me), I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks!

What a great site!
I am getting ready to buy a 240 to replace my 1995 200BR. I'm looking at some used models, 2005 and 2007. One of them has the DTS system. Does anyone have strong feelings about DTS, one way or the other? Is it just a cool extra, or does it make a meaningful difference in the boating experience?
Anyone have any thoughts on differences between the 2005 and 2007 model years?
Thanks!

I have DTS on my 08 240 and I have had mixed feelings. The good: It shifts much smoother and quieter than the non DTS models. The bad: Unfortunately, mine has been less than reliable. I have had the boat back to MarineMax on three separate occasions to try to fix intermittent throttle fault errors. When the fault alarm sounds, you have no throttle response at all and are basically dead in the water. Mercruiser directed the MarineMax mechanic to replace the entire throttle unit at the helm, still had the problem. Next they replaced the shift module on the engine, no help. Its back in the shop now, waiting for Merc to find a solution. I'm still a fan of DTS, but when the electronic shift goes bad, you're calling for a tow. No easy fix for electronic issues in the field.

Our Bow Tent is ready for use. It is going to work great for what we want. We are going to use it a couple of times and see if it needs any further modifications. We will get some sort of rain fly for rain protection but wanted to use it first. I purchased the aluminum tent poles from this this company. Dexters Custom Canvas (Ft Myers Florida) did the fabrication. We will get to use it on a double overnighter next week. Total price was @ 1500$ I will let you know how it works out. Dexter did keep the patterns.

Very nice! Looks tall so the head room seem decent. How tall is it from floor to top?

Thanks for posting the pictures.

I haven't measured it but will guess at a little less than 5 feet. There is still headroom while sitting on the bench seats. I will take interior photos in a day or two.

I am considering removing graphics on my Sundeck - they just don't do much for me - maybe I am showing my age.
I have black gel coat below rub rail.

Anybody done this? pro's and con's and thoughts

Can be done, but IMHO if they are still in good condition I would not take them off. Think about resale??

Need some advice about fenders....

What size and type of fenders do you guys use on your 240's. I have varied sizes and am going to replace them all with same type and size. Also any advice on attaching them when you need them would certainly be appreciated. Still learning the fundamentals.....

Not sure of the exact size, but I think mine are like 18" to 24" long and maybe 8" to 10" around. I have 4 of them with 15' to 20' lines attached to them so I can just hook them on the cleats as needed. The longer lines work great when locking through, you can attach two fenders one to the back cleat and one to the mid cleat, and at the mid cleat you use the extra line to loop around the floating bollard in the lock. If you are not in the lock just use the extra line to tie up with since they are already attached to the cleat. Very really would I attach to the front cleats with the fenders. I really only used that for the anchor rode.

I use 8" fenders - the bigger the better to a certain degree - the weight helps keep mine in place better. I have black that do not show the dirt and ribbed fenders. I like the ones where the rope goes through a central hole.

I use for docking not going through locks.

Became the very happy owner of a 2004 Sea Ray 240 Sundeck this past Sunday. Boat has every feature we were shopping for. Stored indoors with only 97 hours on the drivetrain. Here is a question for you 240 owners. When did the 240 Sundeck get "downsized"? By reading all the brochures and looking at a new 240 Sundeck and comparing it to ours, it seems our '04 240 Sundeck is now a 2011 260 Sundeck. Their dimensions are almost the same. The current model year 240 Sundeck has a much smaller cockpit, pretty dang tight setup. Ours looks to have much more "people" room. Is this true or am I imagining things?

When we went shopping we headed straight for Prince William Marina in Va, that is where we bought our 215EC from. Great dealer. Well, I could have head a heart attack when the nice salesman quoated me the price of a new 260 Sundeck, Costco price: $78,500.00!! Well that sent me shopping on the used market. Craigslist once again proved so valuable. Found this great boat for less than half the cost of the new one and it came with a nice trailer. Need to find out where a good spot is for a VHF radio, not crazy about cutting into the lower dash, may go the remote route. Engine bay is a bit tight, looks like spark plug change out is going to be a trying time.

That started with the 2011 models. The 260 and 240 we basically the same anyway, but imo, I don't like how they include swill platforms in the over all length. Addin that 2 feet has extra costs to it. Docking, detailing, puts me in a different category for he coast guard and many more.

I have the 496 in mine and its not bad to get to the plugs once you get used to it. The small block got to be a lot easier.

Chuck nice looking boat! Noticed that you have it plugged in since obviously you have an onboard charger, but put my mind at ease, I also have an onboard charger on mine but when I charge it I take part of the cover off and open the battery compartment hatch for ventilation. Is that absolutely necessary? I would prefer not to do that (noticed also that you're not doing it!) and just plug it in but when I got my charger the intructions stated that there should be adequate ventilation! I'd appreciate your thoughts on that, thanks!

Thanks she was a sweet boat. I had true shore power added to her along with a dual charger. On the 240 it had enough ventilation not sure about the 210.
