240 BR vs 220 BR

Hi all.
I sold my beautiful 200 BR in preparation for 2ftitis and I'm pleased to announce that I have a bad case of it; coincidentally, just in time for the Seattle Boat Show.

I wanted to actually skip the two foot thing and jump up four feet. The trouble is, there aren't many 240 Selects out there and the couple that I have found are, in my opinion, over-priced. There's an '03 240 BR in Florida that i am pondering, but its about $4K to get it to Seattle.

There are lots of 220 Selects though! Enjoyment will be mostly in the ocean around Vancouver. We don't have as much closed water as Seattle. More swell, more chop; I've started talking myself into the idea that a 240 isn't going to make much difference in ride comfort and that I should just go with the 220.

Any thoughts on this?

FB,

Question for you, how did you 200 handle the waters around Vancouver?

I think I would hold out for the larger boat. I have a little time in the 220 (5.0 Alpha and 350 Mag/B-III) and a 240 BR (350 Mag/B-III) from previous in water boat shows. My 230 is the older brother of the '01 and newer 230s, but shares many of the same hull characteristics. If you are willing to back up a couple of years, have a look at the 2001 and 2002 230 BR as it's the exact same boat as the '03-'05 240.

In short, the 230/240 has more cockpit space and noticeably more bow space. The 230/240 also has a deeper cockpit. In addition the anchor locker and ski locker are both bigger. Visually, both boats have similar lines, but if you look closely at the 230/240, you will notice that the forward section of the bow comes to a sharper V, while the nose of the 220 is bit stubbier. The 230/240 has a bolt-on swim platform vs a molded-in version for the 220.

As far as ride is concerned, yes the 240 will rider better and pound a bit less. In addition, the 230/240 will come on plane with less bow rise. Another feature I enjoy on my 230 is the w/s wiper. We take several trips down to the coast each year and we always hit a shower or two. So up go the fwd. and side curtains and on goes the wiper. It's also nice when you take spray over the bow. The 220 runs well with the 5.0 MPI and flat out flies with the 350 Mag/B-III. The 230/240 does well with 5.7 EFI and is better with the 350 MAG. Big blocks, although scarce, are also available with the 230/240. I think you will also find that several 230/240s will also have trim tabs which are great for leveling uneven loads, crosswinds, lowering the bow a hair and etc.

Now the only problem, as you pointed out, is finding a 240. Good luck and be patient. The right 220 or 240 will show up when you least expect it.

Just curious, I have visted BC/Victoria and it's a beautiful area. How did your 200 handle the waters around Vancouver? Would a center or dual console suit your needs better than a bowrider?

Searide is correct sir. Charley has understated the ride quality of the 240BR vs the 220 The 240 rides a lot better and will take rougher water much better. That deeper cockpit is a lot deeper and gives a more secure ride and more storage space along the gunnels.

If you have a lot of open water the 240 is the better boat to purchase.

Wesley,

In my opinion, I think we can blame Chuck (you know I'm kidding) as most opted for the 240 SD over the 240 Select in this price range.

Sorry, I didn't mean to do it:lol::smt043:lol:
If the real estate market keeps it up I may just have a great 240 SD "Cruiser" avl. for you.

Sorry Dr. J. I plan on splashing my 230 the first warm (above 60 F) day in February.

Chuck,

Just get all the listings you and your agents feel that are worth pursuing. Eventually they will sell and the market will turn.

Damn you lads! I'll be ice fishing the first week of Feb then boarding a plane to Barbados to watch a game @ Berts. Boating north of the 49th is no less than 4 months away. Better to go now than watch my retirement plan reduced another 30%.

The 240 is a huge step up in my opinion. We went from a 175 to the 240 and we thought we had a yacht the ride improved so much. As far as expenses go it will cost about the same money to run the 240 as the 220. The 350 mag is pretty stingy with fuel, figure 9 or so gallons per hour at cruise. Your big expense will be the tow vehicle if you don't have enough truck to tow it. Go for it you won't regret it.

SeaRide, curses to you! I was ready to accept the deep freeze forecasted next week (minus 30C) and you had to detail all the reasons I enjoy my 230BR so much. Will spring ever come?

Ditto, except for the minus 30C. It is a little warmer here in Memphis. However, the same comment applies - Will spring ever come?
