220 DA thread

Can I ask where do you look up the S/N to find what type of engine you have? I suspect mine was rebuilt/replaced along the way but cant tell by looking at it.
I would recomend the high rise intake and replacement marine carb, either Edlebrock or Holly, from Michigan Motorz. http://www.michiganmotorz.com/ I bought a replacement engine from them, sliver package 5.7 with the Edlebrock carb and high rise manifold on the 5.7 vortec block and it runs great. the engine with this intake and carb rates at 315 HP and the extra power makes the boat get on plane effortlessly and crusies with 4 people and 3/4 tank gas at 3000 rpm on gps 27 mph. I put a Mich Wheel 4 blade 19 pitch prop. I am not interrested in top speed and have never even tried to see what the top end is. I was more interrested in economy and mid range staying on plane at 2500 rpm, which it does at about 20 mph and gets about 5 mpg at this rate.

I plan on having a mechanic check the engine out. As far as load goes, I had 2 adults and a child, a full tank of fuel, an empty water tank, 2 additional batteries and the normal days worth of goods. The boat did get on plane but would not exceed 2600 RPMs or 20 mph. When in neutral, the engine can be revved and easily get up there. There is something keeping the motor from exceeding 2600 RPMs while underway. I was thinking there was just too much drag from the tabs or the prop being the wrong size. Although I have found one 220DA owner on the internet mentioning they had the same diameter and pitch that I have. Any thoughts on my prop or the outdrive?

I want to keep the trim tabs but for troubleshooting sake, I would like to remove them. Once the boat performs to my satisfaction, I will reinstall them and make sure they are in accordance with Bennett's installation instructions.

With the trim tabs fully retracted, they have no effect, the prop should be a 18 to 19 pitch and wont effect performance that much unless it is way off. Sounds like carb or fuel problems to me. Also first check fuel filter and water seporator first and make sure no restrictions in the fuel supply. The carb you mentioned looks like a automotive carb and is not compatable with marine use. It is very importent the fuel pump and carb are marine certified to avoid explosions. Is the ignation the original Thunderbolt ignation from mercruiser? This would be a vortec 5.7 engine which should run excellant when set up correctly.

LetsRock,

Your starter is located on the starboard side of the boat. Just above where the starter bolts to the block is a plate with your serial number on it.

Do you have a pic or model number on the Edelbrock carb? It could be a marine version, hopefully and your not out big bucks for a marine carb. Check to see if it has vacuum ports. Edelbrock marine carbs should not have any vacuum ports.

Look for an Edelbrock marine performer intake. It will need to fit the vortec heads that you have on that motor. The bolt patern and ports are different than the older 350 motors and will match the heads you have from looking at the pics.

Here are the Marine Carbs

I have been reading some DIY cockpit carpet threads here and decided to try to make one local instead of ordering one. I took a trip over to the discount remnant store and found a roll 7 feet by 15 feet of this carpet. The store will also cut it to my patern for free and bind the edge for $1.50 a running foot. The roll cost me $70. I will make my patern this weekend and hopefully have the carpet by the following weekend. I am still deciding on installing snaps, I will probably mark them on the patern just in case.

Rockhead, I forgot to ask. Did you check the oil and make sure it was not milky or have water in it?

I checked the oil and it was fine. The carb that I do have is not a marine carb, it's a regular 600 CFM Edelbrock 1406. I am going to install the rigged mickey mouse mercruiser fuel injected intake with a compatible edelbrock performer intake. As far as distributor goes, what does anyone recommend? I want to install a simple mechanical advance distributor in place with what's there now. My buddy did a Fuel Injection conversion on his engine by replacing intake, carb and mechanical advance distributor. What model distributor should I be looking for that is budget friendly. The distributor I have now is as shown.

I am a fan of the MSD products but they can get pretty pricey. A lot of guys on the offshore site seem to go back to the Thunderbolt ignition, thats what I run on my twin 600HP engines with an MSD rev control.

Check www.summitracing.com for your parts. They are generally $50 or so dollars cheaper on carbs than other sites.

I installed the Silver package 5.7 vortec with high rise manifold and Edelbrock Performer marine card and the GM Voyger marine ignation system. Was a bolt in replacement for the original 260. Here is a link http://www.michiganmotorz.com/vortec-marine-engine-silver-package-19672011-replacement-p-58.html they have all the parts available to do what you want. Their prices are fair and the help they provided was great. Check out the manifolds, carbs and if systems on the parts parts and accessories page http://www.michiganmotorz.com/marine-parts-accessories-c-32.html. I have been very pleased with the set up I installed and yours should be able to be fixed up to work just as well for much cheaper than the whole package I bought. This is a first class supplier of marine engines and parts and they know their business well. Check it out for yourself for ideas if nothing else.

Prater,
I did a search on 220DA Gauge Panels and saw in the past that you wanted to redo yours. Did you ever get around to it? If so what did you do? Did you take any pics that you can share?

Have not done this yet, it is one of my next projects to do. Looks to be fairly simple. I did replace the tach and trim guages so I had the panel out, other than a lot of wires to keep straight it looks like a easy replacement. I figured I would make a pattern of the panel then make the replacement panel and then transfer the guages and switches one at a time. I am going to replace all the switches so im no sure what type I am going to use yet.

The only concern that I have is labeling the the switches and making them look somewhat nice. How would you go abot labeling the the switches or have you seen labels you can recommend? I saw some switch tags on ebay that are made of stainless steel that you can apply sticker labels to. Maybe they csn be brought to someone that can engrave them. Maybe a trophy shop can help with a creative application. Just thinking out loud.

I never pulled it out, its way down on the list at the moment...When I do I will make a pattern to keep. Sorry it took so long to reply, I was at the lake enjoying the wind...NOT.

Has anyone replaced the leg supprts on their tables. While taking the dinette down to make a bed the pole collar that slips into the floor and table is very dificult to remove. It is aged and rough nowadays. Has anyone replaced the black collar on the post? Or is there a better alternative to replace the posts? The post was locked in the table good and when I did manage to pop it out I struck my wife in the face with the post by accident. Thank goodness she was ok...

Steven, I took some 400 grit paper and wet sanded the black collar. Also cleaned the plate in the floor with the 400. I use some WD-40 on a rag, clean both areas and the the table and post are very easy to remove.

If you never tried Elmer's Slide-all, it might work for you. Non-oily teflon coating that comes in a aerosal spray can and is nice to work with. Also good for window tracks, and drawer slides and such. Should be available in any good hardware store.

Getting ready to buff out my 1989 220da, are the Searay Emblems on the sides glued or fastened on? Thanks!

Mine were glued on.

Carpet paterns are a pain in the you know were to make on my 220. I may have just scraped 25 dollars worth of 6 mil plastic trying to make the large patern. ugh...

Slowly but surely, I'm getting there!!!
