2023 Springtime Shine thread

I haven’t had much success using compound on a wool wheel on its edge….medium carpet brush works better
This!
Same here. This guy is using a different style of pad though

Also what's your favorite random orbital polisher for light to medium oxidation? I've been pretty happy with my old Porter Cable, thinking about picking up a second one so I can leave the current one at home for the cars.
I switched to the Flex 3401 last winter …it is a game changer when it comes to Duel Action, very pleased with it, it takes a bit to figure how to use it but after that you should love it.

Wow Flex is pretty proud of their orbital….. compounding with a 3M wool pad and rotary does 95% of the shine….polishing a bit more with an orbital and wax to seal it. I like the PC orbital…it’s light you can use it one handed and it reasonably priced.

Yup it’s not cheap. The Flex is a forced rotation DA so it functions different than a regular DA you are able to compound with it. I own both Shourhold DA’s the original and the newer one. The Flex acts more like a Rotary but easier to use IMO.

Cordless Rotary?

Just wrapped the cord on my Harbor Freight rotary. Easy enought to replace the cord, but I wrap it at least once or twice a season. Cord always seems to find the wheel in a flash. It’s 4 seasons old, so I think I’ve gotten my moneys worth.

I know a couple of you have a cordless. I assume with enough batteries and charger, you can go all day. Not that I want to, but for an hour or two at a time?

what’s your setup?

I picked up another random orbital from chemical guys to keep at home for the cars, will keep the old Porter Cable and Makita on the boat. I looked at going cordless, but everything I read said 40 to 45 minutes on a charge. Then I'd have to buy another battery to have two at all times. The cord has never really bothered me, except when using it when the boat's in the water.

Cordless is nice but two things.
1. You need two batteries
2. They are heavier than their corded counterparts.
I’ve never had the cord issue except on the top side. Two batteries is enough time before I need a break anyway,
I rocked a HF for 5 years. Broke down last year and bought a dewalt on sale. Big difference. Balanced, power is smooth and no vibration like the HF

My HF would catch the cord to….. couple of time could have been hurt. I bought delwalts rotary two seasons ago and have never sucked in the cord…. Go figure…. I tell you those Chinese are either trying to kill us or maim us

Yup, boat is in the water and just doing some light touch up, but there's always some weird angle to get a good buff and seems that's when I catch the cord.

I was going to drive up today and do some more compounding, polishing and waxing. I'm getting closer to letting the guy who gave me a price do it.

and two 5Ah or higher batteries. If you have three you can rotate them in the charger. I take a break after burning through 2 so is all I need. :)

I went up Saturday and this morning to finish up a couple things…. Got a stuck bolt on the main zinc….. two trip to the hardware store…… pulled over for speeding….. 45 in a 25…. Cop says in Ohio if you’re out of state we double the fines…he gave me a warning thank god…. The points would have killed me….. Ended up talking to strangers in the storage building…. Really got little done…… I should have just gone to the bar

The only traffic ticket I've ever received was in Catawba Island State Park from a conservation officer in 1977. It was late fall and there were two cars in the whole park...his and mine. 45 in a 25 zone. I was just out for a Sunday drive. The officer kind of ruined the moment.

I started with a Dewalt corded rotary, then went cordless. Dealing with a cord while flopping around topside is just one more thing to complain about. That 20V unit posted above is what I have, love it. 2 5Ah batteries is plenty for most days. Use three and you're pushing the limits of most mortals knees and backs.

Once you buy a couple Dewalt batteries you'll want this thing too. I can't tell you how awesome this is around the docks in summer. A bit warm whilst grilling, no problem. A bit muggy whilst sitting and drinking, no problem :)

Ouch! Polisher, batteries and a charger $500!

Now if it would just self polish the boat on command

I bought the DeWalt (tool only) their fast charger and some highly rated 6.5 Ah 3rd party batteries.
