2006 260 with water leak

I know there have been several postings for water issues with the 260 but I am trying to figure out why I have water pooling up right at the base of the stairs going into the cockpit of my new to me used boat? There does not seem to be water coming from the window or doors into cabin and we have not run the shower so I am not sure what would cause this. Has anyone had this same problem.

Yes... i do on my 280... it could be a million things

Things to check

1. Anchor locker
2. Windshield
3. Seal where wiper meets deck
4. Rub rails
5. Deck Rail where meets deck
6. Port side lounger (bolts holding lounger to wall are not sealed)
7. Windows

Sorry I couldn't be more precise... i am still trying to figure out my leak source. Just keep hunting. Its easier w/ 2 people. One with a hose... the other inside the cabin looking around.

Have you been running the A/C? It drains to the shower sump. That was a common problem I had with my 260. The sump would get some soap build up and the float would stick and allow the box to overflow. Pull out your trash can to check.

Since you don't post any information about yourself we can't help you.

If you are in salt water and the water is salty, then it is an external leak, such as anchor, windows, bow rail, hull penetration. If not it could be your freshwater tank and all of the ones mentioned above including the drain for the bathroom sink. Check the hoses first and see if water is getting into the sump pump. Then check the sump pump to see if it is functioning properly. If that isn't it, then start crying. I have been looking for the "leak" since the day I bought my Seacrap boat and nobody including my infamous dealer can find the leak. Leaks suck. :smt013

P.S. Eventually your carpet will smell and rot and get moldy and your boat will be declared an environmental hazard by the EPA and you will be charged for the cost to clean it up. :wow:

Good Luck.

Fishnut,

I bet, if your leak is freash water, it is the shower sump. It will overfill the box on start up and water squirts out of the hole where the wires enter to run the pump. The best way to check it is to run the shower and watch how the sump box reacts. Its like it can't keep up with the initial rush of water. I sealed around the wires and built up enough sealant on top of them to make contact with the top of the sump and my problem went away.

I had the same problem. Was able to find it when, while on the trailer with the cockpit cover on, the well below the stairs filled with a gallon of water and hence the carpet (which is installed under the stairs into the well :smt021) wicked the water making it all wet.

So it had to be rain water.... Started inspecting the windows. Apparently they fell out of adjustment just enough to allow water between the glass and foam seal. Had to tighten the clips up and problem for me solved.

The trick was getting in there while it was raining to see where the drips were coming from, as they would dry up pretty quick after the rain. I hate those windows anyway. lousy design.

Thank you.

We changed out sump pump because it wasn't working along with the box. Then we replaced the incoming hose connections because there wasn't any water from the sink going into the box. We don't use the shower so no drain issues.

On our following test run, we didn't use any water so nothing went down the drain. No AC, no anything. The refrigerator was the only thing running. Water accumulated around the sump pump and the lower area carpet became saturated with water.

Next suspect is the fresh water tank. Also checking windows.

Were you able to look at where the wires enter the sump box. On mine there was a 1/2" gap above the wire gromet. So any water that was in the sump would splash out while we ran the boat.

We've had our 260DA for a month. Following its voyage down the coast in fairly rough seas, the well beneath the stairs was full of water which, in turn, wicked through to the cabin carpet which made it saturated. Since then it has dried out and not recurred. We haven't been in rough seas since - river use only. Gee I'd love to find out where the damn water gets in!! Thanks for the pointers.

Fishnut,
I know the other member here 240da had the similar problem on his 2006. It was the fresh water intake side of his fresh water tank. He had to access it then re-attach the intake hose to the intake male adapter that is some how misshaped. You might PM him.

Fishnut and others, I found on my 240da that my forward bilge fills when the boat is in the water and I sleep in the forward v berth. There is a limber hole that connects thru to the engine compartment bilge. If there is water in the engine comp. bilge it drains froward thru the limber hole and fills the shower sump area. Something to think about or check. I also have the same troubles from my shower sump box as everyone else. It seems there is more than one condition that contributes to the sump area troubles, and they seem to occur at different times making it tuff to troubleshoot and deal with.

I thought I should explain the limber hole. There is not an obvious hole. It's more like a depression in the gel coat, and can be easily overlooked. I only found it when I was looking right at it and water "seeped" from it. I am assuming it is a limber hole and not a defect in fabrication. My luck is it is a defect.

Fishnut, you are dangerously close to being a searay hater, like myself. Well I don't really hate it, I'm just so disappointed with it. It seems one thing after another.

+1

Tightening the window clips solved my wet carpet problem last year. Carpet has been dry all season. (Knocking on wood right now...)

The shower sump is the first thing to look at but on mine it was the windows. They just needed to be snugged down a bit.

Mine ended up being the A/C. Unfortunately it was not draining appropriately. We went through everything, ran the shower while looking under the trash can as well as ran a hose against the windows. The easy check was to run the A/C for a period of time without any other "factors" like rain, someone using the shower, ect. Imagine that, it filled up sloooooowly. :smt038

Good thing the OP has been checking back in, huh? :smt101

Hehe... maybe we should wait to see if he comes back before we ask him if he has the gap under the rub rail near the vents?

As a side note, I spent close to 2 hours cleaning the stain left behind after I had the leak last season. Who decided that it was a good idea to put light tan carpeting in the cabin, anyway? All they had to do was put a darker color on the floor so the watermarks wouldn't show. The rest could have stayed light tan... :smt021

Spill some dye on it! lol.

The thought had crossed my mind, but they didn't have the color "Chesapeake Bay Runoff" in the dye section.
