This boat seems to have more overall hull structure noise than other boats I have been on. Mostly between 1200-1700 RPM and somewhat over 4000...Is this inherent in the design of this particular model? Does this model have wood stringers? Same deal even when out of gear.

- gimbal greased; coupler greased; motor mounts okay; etc

Otherwise it is a real nice boat and we are enjoying it !!!

Thanks!

I have the 07' version and have a rattle from the side boards during idle, but nothing while underway or while powering up the 4.3 in neutral. One of my friends has the 3.0 engine in her ________ (non searay) boat and it shakes a deicent amount at most RPMs. I'm learning through the years of boating with friends and mine that the smaller engines are actually louder than bigger engines. Can't place why, maybe better mounts or exhaust...

Side board = don't know the correct name, but the board that covers the side pockets and holds the throttle arm.

Thanks for the input Golfnit, I'll check those side boards like you suggested but the noise is more structure born...coming from the whole interior shell of the boat. You can feel the buzzing vibration up in the bow also. I isolated the ski hatch, glove box ,etc with only minor change.

There is a guy at my lake with the exact same boat / engine / year; I'll talk to him also to compare notes...

Thanks!

Water bug,

The 185 is Sea Rays entry boat. Last time I heard it is really a bayliner with the Sea Ray logo on it. With that said it is still a great entry level boat into the Sea Ray line.

Yeah way wrong. Brunswich is the mother company that owns Searay, Baja, and recently bought out bayliner as well. But in noway is the 185 a bayliner.

I have the 2006 version of your boat (same engine). I don't have any of the noise-vibration you describe; the boat is much quieter than my old (1987) sea ray seville, and really does not vibrate much at any speed or RPM until I get in the upper end of the range close to WOT. It is really very steady.

Agreed. Just because they share the same parent company, does NOT mean they are built equally. Each mfr still builds to their own specifications.

Thanks everyone for the feedback ! ...maybe some of the guys with the specific 2004-2005 model design will chime in here and share their thoughts...?

I could be wrong(Won't be the first time, per my wife(Grin)), but it was my understanding that the new 175s and 185s had been moved to the Bayliner factory in Mexico. They had been since they are Sea Rays entry level boat they had been integrated into the Bayliner assembly line. Would be interesting to have somebody with a 2008/2009 chime in with their hull ID and see what plant code it has on it.

Assuming this to be true (no idea if it is or not?). The place of assembly is only part of the equation. Do they now share the same parts? Same designs? Same tolerance specs, etc? Depending on the amount of automation and how flexible the automation is, an assembly line can assemble 2 completely different boats of varying quality.

Just did a quick check and it looks like the 185 has had a couple changes in the last few years.

Year Beam lbs Length
2004 7-6 2650 18-6
2005 7-6 2650 18-6
2006 7-3 2400 19-8
2007 7-3 2400 19-8
2008 7-3 2600 19-8
2009 7-3 2600 19-8

WOW...Chuck!!! Did you really say that or has Gary found your password and logged in as you????

 :smt043:lol: Yep it was me. My guy at MM said the newer 2008+ 175 and I thought 185s had been moved to the bayliner factory in Mexico and they were not the same boat as before. Based on the spec changes in 2008 some thing did happen.

I cannot speak for later models but the 04 and 05 hulls are not Bayliner hulls, I looked at both way back when and there were obvious differences. I have the 04 version which is the same as the 05. I do not notice any out of the way noises or vibrations, having said that i am an automotive and heavy truck technician, I am used to the engine and driveline noise and vibration, I do not think mine is excessively loud, there are different ranges of noise levels but I don't think any are above what they should be with 4.3L engine. The engine and drive system is mounted to the hull, engine has some rubber mount pads that should absorb some of the noise and vibration. Check those mounts, be sure there is not some solid contact with the hull, if some of the rubber is bad and there is contact with engine mount bracket and boat mount bracket it could give some bad vibes. There are things that can cause vibrations and noise, if yours is excessive then you need to find out what is wrong. It will probably take and honest technician to go with you on a run to see, feel and listen to what you are talking about to make the call if it is excessive or not.

Just to make it clear. I missed the "2005" and was only talking about the newer 2008+ models.

when I ran my 2006 HIN, it shows the Manufacturer City/Sate is Knoxville, TN.
Also, I haven't noticed any unusual noises or vibrations. A little loud at WOT though.

Did your HIN ID start with "SERV"?

Yes, my HIN does start with SERV.......

That is what I thought. That is the Vonore plant on the Tellico Lake about an hours drive South West of Knoxville. Vonore made the Sport boats up to about the 240SD. Since Riverview was shut down a couple years ago they may now be making the bigger sport boats too??? Riverview used to make the bigger sport boats 260SD+ and the smaller sport cruisers 240DA-260DA.
