I am in the market for an '04-'06 Sundancer 34. I'd appreciate any advice regarding things to pay particular attention to during inspection, survey, mechanical inspection and / or seatrial. Are there any upgrades deemed necessary to these models or is one model year preferable to another?
Thank you
Gregor

We have an 04' and absolutely love it. The two things that come to mind are at this age it's due for manifolds and risers, so hopefully they were just done and the other is related to the "cool fuel" issue. Do a search on here their is tons of valuable information on it. If the boat is powered by 8.1 Vdrives then we cruise at about 3300 rpm and 21-22 knots and it will plane incredibly fast for a boat of its size regardless of load.

I have a friend who has a 05 340 he is going to sell, he is located in ohio and the boat is in tenn.

I've had a late model 2003 Sea Ray 340 Sundancer (same model as you are looking for) for two seasons now and no regrets. The biggest flaws are the aluminum manifolds. If they have any salt water exposure they will have to be replaced if they haven't been already. They install cast iron ones now that last longer. Besides the usual fixing and updating of typical minor issues it's a really solid boat. Two different engines are offered but almost all are 8.1 which is a great motor. Also two different drive set ups. Most are v-drives which I suspect where you live they all will be or they came with I/O's. There was a '06 340 with I/O's where I have my boat and he actually got better speeds and MPG than I did with v-drives but my low speed handling andheavy weather handling was better. I’d stick with the 8.1’s with v-drives. My wife and I easily handle this boat and travel with two young boys for a ten day trip each summer and numerous weekends on the boat.

I absolutely LOVE my 340, but I don't have time to enjoy it anymore. Work has literally consumed us all. (We own a small mom and pop business)

Gregor, PM me if you're interested...

Greg, have you talked with Franklin at Marine Max? He is a quality guy, handled the sale of my 340 last year. I have known him for several years. When I signed the papers putting it in brokerage on Sat morning - he already had 2 buyers that had been talking to him. He was showing the boat 3 days later - sold it within a week.

If you tell him what you are looking for - he knows what is about to come on the market - but not there yet.

We are looking at buying a 2004 Sundancer 34 and I'm hoping to get some information on how this boat handles in the ocean. My husband and I have had sailboats in the past and considering a transition to power for faster island hopping and weekend overnights with the kids since we recently moved to the Virgin Islands. I don't expect the boat to be able to handle the same sea conditions as a sail boat, but we do routinely get choppy seas and moderate swells of 2-4 feet. Any input is greatly appreciated!

I owned an '04 340 for 5 seasons and loved it. I eventually wanted a bigger boat with diesel engines which is why I sold it. I replaced the aluminum manifold/risers soon after I had bought it. I definitely think the 8.1 L engines are the best choice for this boat. As far as handling in bigger surf, 2-4 footers are absolutely no problem at all. This boat has plenty of length, weight and power to handle that. The only issue I ever had was the Kohler 5kw generator which kept "cycling" up and down and would shut itself down. I threw a bunch of money at that problem and eventually nailed it. I cant really remember the issue though. Otherwise it's the perfect weekend cruiser with your young family.

Thanks for the information. In looking more into the local weather, I may have underestimated the sea conditions. We routinely swell condition of 4-7 feet. Just curious what conditions you've had you boat out in and how it handled. Thanks.
