I have pulled the engines out of my 2001 340 DA.
1. We are replacing the exhaust manifolds the exhaust riser system. We were not too soon. They were original. Eight years in salt water two years in fresh water and 550 hours.
2. We are replacing fuel coolers to the new system. The original coolers are corroded.
3. We are changing the water circulating pumps on both engines.
4. We are changing the rusted and corroded belt pulleys on both engines so the belts will not wear so quickly.
5. The bolts on the oil pans are corroded and one of the pans has a leak in the gasket seal but the pans look ok. We will install new pan gasket and bolts.
6. The timing assembly covers were corroded so we replace both of them.
7. The oil stick tube had a hole in the bottom where it entered the engine. We are replacing both.
8. The motor mounts were corroded and rusted so we are replacing the motor mounts. Both oil coolers are corroded so we are replacing them.
It is amazing what we do not see when we “pre flight inspect” for the cruise on some of our older boats.

Vince,

If you get a chance, post some pictures - including the setup used to pull 'em out.

Carter, Our boat is on their trailer. They have a hoist system at their shop. I do have some photos but do not know how to post them here. I can e-mail them to you.

Got it Vince...It's in their shop - so they are probably using an overhead crane of some kind. I thought you might be doing it yourself and rigged something up...

While the engines are out, are you going to change your shaft seals as well?

The fuel coolers are the most recent from Mercury Marine at a cost of $424.00 each.

While the motors are out we will clean the bilge check the shaft seals. The seals were not leaking. The cutlass bearings have some slack in them so they will be replaced. Including tax I have bought $9,000.00 + in parts.

The reason I post this is because if I have these issues on a 10 year old salt water boat then some of you may have some of the same problems on your boats.

I know of one 34 Sea Ray with a destroyed engine from water ingestion. He will need to replace that engine and make repairs to the other engine. He will spend much more than I have spent.

These Sea Rays are very nice boats. They deserve the best care we can give them. Boats are an expensive hobby. They need to be ready to go when we are ready to go.

I would replace the those original strong shaft seals with the new ones with cross over cooling... There are easy to get at now, and you have to pull the shafts to change the cutlass bearings anyway... Why not install an oil changing system?
