hope this is the right spot for this question. i have an 07 2.5 mercury 4 stroke outboard. always dealer maintained, and well cared for. i filled the gas tank before using it this weekend.. what happens is this...it will run for 2-3 min with no problem throughout the full range of the throttle.. then it will just die...no sputtering no warning just dead. it will restart only after waiting 5 min and then the cycle just repeats......i have changed the plug and the gas(just in case) there is a good stream of fuel from the on/off valve to the carb.
my thoughts are
1. fuel filter....if so where is it
2 some sort of obstruction in the fuel tank or fuel line.......

am i missing something simple........

thank you

Don't ask me how I know to check this, but have you checked the vent screw at the top of the gas cap to see if it's unscrewed a bit to let air come in? If it isn't a vacuum will build up inside the gas tank and the engine doesn't have enough suction to overcome the vacuum.

Overheating. My 8hp 2 stroke did that once, just shut down and after it cooled down it would restart. Check to see if it's peeing water.

 This is what it sounds like to me...

okay vent cap open.......plenty of water from cooling tube......wires seem to be all secure......still the same problem..............thank you all for the tips.......float or needle valve????

is there a fuel filter on this thing????? im trying to find the manual now

Run some seafoam or startron through it - if you cant keep it running long enough, take the carb off and clean it out real good (with spray carb cleaner and compressed air) in my experience, these types of problems are usually fuel related (old or ethanol based gumming up the carb)

problem solved..........too much oil in it= some oil in carb...cleaned carb...fired first pull ran like a top... thank you all enjoy the weekend
