1987 Sea Ray Sundancer 340
Engines
Dual 454 Mercruisers
My wife and I just purchased a 1987 Sea Ray Sundancer 340. Under 600 original hours on motors. Mercruiser 454's. I've already done plugs, wires, caps, rotors and electronic points. Port motor timed and running beautifully. Starboard motor (I believe) has a bad coil and will be changing that tomorrow. Any info, knowledge or encouragement from the members is welcome. Ty

Welcome to the Forum. I had an '89 340da for almost 5 years and know the boat very well. We really liked the boat and took her from the Sacramento River Delta to San Francisco Bay (about 70 nautical miles) several times during our ownership. They are a nice beam-y boat and as we cruised with 2 90 lb. dogs there seemed to be plenty of room.

The one issue we had with the boat was we felt the swim platform is a bit on the smallish side at only 22" deep. We solved that problem by installing a platform from Swim Platforms, Inc. www.swimplatforms.com and it really changed the way we used the boat. The new platform is 39" deep and has a hidden, integrated boarding ladder.

There is also a thread dedicated to the old 340s and there is a lot of information there. When you get a chance post some pictures of your boat and if you have any questions please ask.

Thank you for the reply and the info regarding the swim platform. We are excited and trying to get as much maintenance, cleaning and repair done this fall so she's set to go come spring. Do you have a link to the thread dedicated to the old 340's?

Another quick question. Is there a resource to find a factory service manual and parts catalog/schematic for the boat?

Here we go. Port and starboard motors tuned and running beautifully. Noticed starboard blower isn't running. Remove it and noticed the label said " requires a 6 amp fuse". Anyone know where the fuse is located?

Isn't there a circuit breaker on the panel just below the blower switch? See if the breaker is tripped. If there is a fuse I would suspect it is in line somewhere. I would try and crawl in where the blowers are and put a voltage meter on the wires to that blower. If there is power at the blower but no workee, you need a new blower.

Which brings me to something I think you're starting to figure out. The '86-'89 340da's were horrible to work on and worse if you are a larger guy....like me. I'm 6'2" and 230 lbs. Plus I don't bend and fold to good anymore. That engine room has maybe 1 1/2 places to stand. You will do much of your work from above hanging in the engine room. In fact I made a 36" x 18" plywood "platform" so I could lay on the engines and hatch supports. I once tried to stand between the motors and got my knee stuck between the exhaust manifolds. Took a while and some skin to get loose. Somewhere in there I made the decision to never buy a boat with v-drives again....or at least get a wider one.

Shawn. Ty for the info. Any info gives me a starting point. Will figure it out when I'm there tomorrow. I'm only 5'10" and affectionately referring to all this as "boat yoga".

Ty,

I have some schematics for 1988 340 Sundancer. There wasn't much difference between 1987 and 1988. I got them from someone here on the forum and I'm happy to pass them along. Please PM me your email address and I will send them. Sea ray has the owners manual online but I can send that to you as well if you want.

I have a 1988 340 Sundancer and love it! It's a great boat. I've got 1200 hours on the engines and still going strong. I think you'll like the boat.

Thank you. Now the big question. How do I PM you?

There is new software on this site, so I wasn't sure how to private message you either. However, I clicked on your name and one of the options was "start a conversation." I sent you a message. You should see a picture of an envelope towards the top of the page if it worked!

Does anyone know if the Aframe rudder supports part number 144030 for an 89 Sundancer are the same for an 87?
