Hi all,

I am very new to boating and this forum and I would like some suggestions from the professional boaters out there.

I have found an great deal from what I've been told but would like to hear from others on the forum. The purchase is a 1987 Sea Ray 230 Weekender. It has a new engine (20hours), and a new outdrive. Alpha 1 350 hp. It was looked over by an experienced boater/mechanic and he thinks the engine and engine bay and hull areas are perfect. This is one reason why I am looking to purchase it.

Includes: Bimini, Mooring Cover, Fridge, New Throttle, VHS, Depth Finder, GPS, Radio, Speakers, Pump Out, Sink, Swim Platform, NO STOVE (removed from original owner, I would be the third owner). NO TRAILER, I plan on storring it on the marina untill I find a trailer.

However, it's been sitting for 2 years but everything worked properly before storring. The interior will need a refresh of vinyl, the teak wood will need touch up, of course it will need cleaning. There were no major issues with anything on this boat.

Other than cosmetics, I think I have a great buy here. Please provide your thougths!

Price $5,000

Thanks

I have a We 230 - 1985. The best boat I have ever owned also my 3rd boat. Vinyl not as much as an issue. That is really good advice to have a survey done or a VERY detailed inspection by a GREAT mechanic. My motor has over 920 hrs and runs strong! To be honest I don't even use my inside stove or refer, I have a Magna Grill mounted in the cockpit area and grill everything! If it checks out buy it you wont regret it! You should be able to get a good deal on a trailer to.

price up the new vinyl, a trailer, bottom paint, what ever else it needs ,new batts, now how much is it? just something to think about. and look at other boats for sale, not trying to steer you away from it, that is a great boat.

I just bought a 1987 Sea Ray 230 with a chevy 350 for power and a alph 1 260 outdrive. Looks like you have a nice boat and the price looks good also. I would get it out of the water tho and look it over real good. I can give you some advice on the teak as I have been restoring mine for 3 months. Don't use teak oil if you want a nice looking finish on your teak. I made the mistake of using oil after I put all new teak on mine and re-sanded what I could re-use. I had to strip the oil all off (teak oil does not hold up and looks weathered after 30 days). After I got all the oil off of the teak I went to a company called Sikkins and used their product called Cetol http://www.overtons.com/modperl/pro...inish-Quart&i=81843&r=view&from=grid&review=1 It gives you a real nice fininsh it's some work to apply it 3 coats of satin and 2 coats of high gloss but boy was it worth it. I found out about it on this website. If you want some pictures of mine let me know and I will send you some. Bought my Sea Ray last Sept. and been working on it ever since. Well hope all goes well and you pick that boat up she looks good my next project is a windless winch and a anchor pulpit.

Where did you find these on the 230? Nice share!

You will love this boat! I love mine! I would love to see your restore pics!! Thanks for the teak info..... I've been debating what I should do w/mine for years... I usually use the cleaner at begininning of each season.. I love the wet stained look though. Have you removed the teak prior to treating it? What kind of finish is the result using Cetol? How often do you need to redo? thanks for the info!!

Does anybody know where to get the original sliding cuppbaord doors? I have two that are litterally falling apart and need to replace them, or any other ideas to use for the doors?
Thx-
Don

I have seen some boats with them removed , i think if you took them out and thought about it you could make a new one , start with canvas and glue thin strips of wood or what ever would look good and end up with a nice set of doors.

I think that you are talking about tambour doors. Take a look at Pietro's 390 EC restoration, he used bamboo carpet as a replacement- very nice. Here is a link-look at post #265: http://clubsearay.com/showthread.ph...ad/page8?highlight=390ec+complete+restoration
BTW, I had an '89 230WE for several years. Nice boat for that size.

It was a big job for me as first I oiled all the new teak wood and the teak that I sanded then I installed it all and then after about a month it looked like it was on my boat for 10yrs. So I took it all off (again) used a teak cleaner and cleaned all the oil off of every piece of teak. I then used the Cetol you put 3 coats of the satin then for the sealer you put 2 coats minimum. I put 4 coats on some teak for extra protection. If you like the wet look that is what you will get, as you will get a high gloss and shows the grain off real nice. As soon as I pull mine out of the shed I will send you some pics. Do you have the teak that goes across the stern about 6" wide about 7' long I put 5 coats on it and people don't want to sit on it as they think it's still wet ha ha. I notice you have an anchor pulpit can you send me some pics of it would like to get some ideas and what kind of winch you have, as I am looking into the Lewmar winch. I have the 230 cuddy cabin.
