Mercruiser 165HP (GM I6)
Hey all, so I recently was handed down a 1975 SRV 190 with 165hp Mercruiser (GM I6). The boat was fairly rough shape when I picked it up due to having sat for 3ish years.

Haven't been able to get it started yet because we couldn't get a spark. I believe the ignition coil is the culprit so I will be replacing it today.

Anyway, I'm new around here and will probably have numerous questions as I'm fixing up the boat so I decided to share my progress and hopefully make some friends along the way.

Here are some pics of how it has progressed since I picked it up yesterday.

So apparently I can't figure out how to get my pictures to show up so here's a link to the album they are in http://picasaweb.google.com/MadPikAvenger/TheBoat?feat=directlink If anyone can help with the pictures I'd love to post them here.

Welcome aboard.
I see some spaghetti hanging from the dash and a few panels worn out but over all looks like a good starter project. Check Old Skool out on my profile.

Wish2Fish: thanks, what's the secret to the photos?

OldSchool:Yea the panels are bad and the floor is a little soft in spots. The spaghetti under the dash looks way worse than reality. The white wire is left over from bypassing the safety switch which broke a while a back but since then has been fixed and the rest is from the depth finder with used to be mounted and clean looking but isn't now.

All things that can be repaired pretty easy. The floor, like mine, may be a challenge. Over all it looks like a great boat and well worth the effort to bring her back to new condition.

Nice looking classic! I had a rat's nest under the dash of an old Starcraft I had. Took a month to figure everything. Some folks should be forcibly kept away from wiring!

Howdy everyone. Thanks for the comments and advice on the boat! Sorry I haven't posted here in a while. Life got a little busy what with the holiday weekend and whatnot. I have made a bit of progress on the boat though.

Here's what I got done:
-drained all of the old gas.
-installed new coil, plugs, points, and condenser.
-set the dwell and the timing
-changed the oil and filter
-changed the drive oil
-Got the boat running!

Unfortunately once running it went down hill quick.

So I:
-Removed and took apart the carb
-Found the problem to be a heavily varnished and gummed up/clogged carb and torn accelerator pump.
-So I cleaned and rebuilt the carb and...
...we're back in business!

Haven't looked at the fuel filter yet but for now turns over twice at the most and fires right up and runs like a champ.

Tomorrow I plan on polishing the hull and hopefully Thursday getting it out into the water and seeing how it really runs.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. You had muffs on the engine with water running through it correct?

Yup yup used the muffs. I've had an Achilles inflatable with a 15hp outboard for a while now. I'm not necessarily new to boating, just new to owning a boat that doesn't fold up into a compact area haha.

So I took the boat out today for the first time !

Started right up and ran well. Let it warm up then took off across the lake. Hit about 38mph which I was pretty happy with considering I didn't play with the trim and the motor is 35yrs old and well used and the prop has definitely seen better days .

Then, well staying constant on the throttle the motor began to hesitate and then would stall out unless I returned the throttle back near idle. In neutral it would rev up fine, only under load did we experience problems. :smt009

So we put the boat back the the trailer and headed for home.

I am fairly certain that the problem lies in the carburetor getting gummed/plugged up again as a result of the varnish and crud from the bad gas having sat in it for so long getting pushed through the lines (I siphoned the bad gas and added new gas and treatment prior to running). The other thing is that I haven't taken a peek at the fuel filter yet.

I plan on checking these things tomorrow but any other advice/recommendations on what to check/how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Also, are new fuel filters for the 75 Mercruiser 165hp easy to come by? (can i get them from the autoparts store?)

Thanks guys!

don't rule out the fuel pump. Ethanol doesn't like the rubber in there. Can't forget about the pick-up and the anti-syphon valve. Minor parts that may cause some headaches...

Are the pick-up and anti-siphon valve part of the fuel pump?

What's the best way to go about inspecting/diagnosing the fuel pump?

We had a similar situation. Easiest to change filters which showed no junk or seperation. Then pulled pickup screen and anti siphon valve from fuel tank. Clean as a whistle. Then just went ahead and replaced old pump (might as well right?), Finally pulled the carb and it was full of gunk.

How do you go about getting to the anti siphon valve and pickup screen in the tank.. the boat is a closed bow and it seems like it would be hard to get to the tank?

I've acquired a new fuel pump and plan on taking the old one apart tomorrow to check it out. If it looks bad I'll just throw the new one on. If not I'll just return the new one and move on to the next likely culprit.

Thanks for all the help so far! Ya'll rock! :smt038

Ug. You might want to try that last. The valve is at the top of the pick up tube. I guess you'd have to pull the tank to do that? When I pulled ours out of the 190 I had to trim the glass at the dash to get enough clearance. Lets hope your carb is gunked up.

My idea on the fuel pump was that I had no idea how old it was, probably 28 years? So might as well R&R on my terms rather than out on the water somewhere. Although the old one is probably better quality that the new.

I think I'll definitely leave that for last. The boat revs up fine in neutral but when in drive it'll get up on a plane and cruise for about a minute tops before it starts stalling out. So to me it sounds like either the fuel pump isn't pumping enough fuel or the carburetor is gummed up. The fuel pump is the original so that puts it at 35yrs old so I wouldn't be surprised if the diaphragm has seen better days.

Thanks for the help, I'll keep ya'll posted on what I find today.
