Hi,

I'm a new owner and new to the club :)

Basically I'll start up fine (after pumping the throttle 2 times first), head out fine, open her up (WOT) and then when I want to come to a complete stop (shift immediately into neutral) the boat sounds like it gets bogged down and completely stalls. From that point forward, I can not keep it in idle unless I let it sit off for like 30 minutes.

I've given it a tune up, adjusted the shifting cables, replaced all filters (except IAC), increased RPMs (now runs in idle just above the 10 notch on my dash). But no matter all these tweaks, this annoying problem still occurs. The engine is running a bit loud and my temperature gauge after warming up hovers just over 170...

Any advice / insight would be greatly appreciated - I love this boat and figuring this issue out would really help the wife feel more confident when we're on the water.

Thank you !

So, what happens when you ease off the throttle and come to a stop?

I would not recommend coming from WOT straight to neutral unless you absolutely have to... the rush of water to the transom could end up flooding your engine into a hydro-lock situation.

Welcome to CSR!

Hey Jim - wow thanks for replying so quickly... basically what happens once I jump from WOT to a stop, the engine will literally putter a bit and then immediately stall out.

Then the next steps need to occur to get her started successfully:
1) I'll need to pump the throttle a few times
2) Turn the key a bit longer to have it fire back up (even though it's a TKS - which doesn't seem to work)
3) Then immediately shift into forward to ramp up the RPMs to keep it from stalling out

From this point forward once its running - trying to drive at any speed between 5-10 mph is not an option because the engine sounds as if there isn't enough power and stalls out (maybe because it's flooded with gas). So docking too soon after this is impossible BUT even if I run her in idle for 3-5 minutes that still doesn't take care clearing anything out - I literally need to turn off the engine and let it sit for like 30 minutes. This issue is crazy frustrating.

Other than that - as long as I avoid this maneuver and shift down slowly- she runs fine (a little hot/loud) but otherwise fine.

my first instinct is the water rushing into the exhaust and flooding the mufflers causing an exhaust restriction
I have never gone from WOT straight to neutral for fear of getting swamped by the wash coming over the transom
I will go to near idle then bump the throttles momentarily as the wash arrives.

wow - i didn't even think about that... you may be right. I was about ready to pull the trigger on a carb rebuild, IAC replacement.... $,$,$, - anything to make the wife feel comfortable that we're not going to be stranded if we had to stop for whatever reason.

+1. Saw this in action on a friends boat. Its also dangerous for your passengers unless everyone is paying attention and expecting such a rapid deceleration. 1/3, 2/3, then WOT works great for getting on plane then backing off, and a simlar slowing to come off plane too... unless of course you are in an emergency situation.

Yeah, another vote for not backing down too fast.

Do you use the boat a lot? If it sits, maybe the idle circuit is clogged in the carb.

Have you tried some sea foam or carb cleaner?
