The admiral and I are having a nice little chat about which TV looks the best. I went to the boat today and installed this new Samsung hd 19" beauty. We are trying to decide which one looks the best. We know the Samsung has the better picture but we also want to do what's best for the vaule of the boat as well. She said why don't you post it on the club and see what they all think. So here it is, which do ya'll think looks the best. The new 19" Samsung or the 13" Panasonic. Thanks Jim

Who cares about the value of the boat if you can remove it and put the 13"er back in. I think it looks really nice myself. What model Samsung is it?

I'll take a widescreen LCD over a dated 4:3 aspect ratio, very small, tube TV any day.

It's a no brainer. The widescreen. Move the receiver up under the new set and make a nice DVD storage drawer where the receiver is now.

OK... I'll bite.

I don't like TV's that stick out in front of the openings. Get a 4x3 aspect ratio LCD that will fit in the opening... there are several out there. Put a backing board in the hole to mount the TV flush.

Pull the TV, put a door over the hole and call it storage! Who needs a TV on the boat?

Black Pearl....that's a nice looking install, but I have to say I'm with Gary on that one. I bought the exact same Samsung on Black Friday with the intention of doing as you did and decided not to do so as it stuck to far out for my liking (just a personal thing)

Gary, can you be a bit more specific on such units that would fit in the factory hole.

I haven't changed my old one out as I haven't found such a unit.

Yea Randy, My wife feels the same way. I sorta agree also. Just looking for an update TV that will fit that hole and still look factory. I can still return the Samsung. Help us out Gary with some models. Thanks Jim

Hay Black Pearl the 19” looks good. We have a 2001 340. I installed a 15” LCD TV with built in DVD that fit flush in the hole. It will pull out and swivel. It is bolted to the swivel plate with a regular TV mount. I gave the old TV away. We have the Cherry interior like yours. We really like the 340.

I agree with Gary. Do a little cabinet work and flush mount the LCD.

My old 340 had the original 11" TV and I had this Dell 15" 16:9 that was going to fit nicely. So I opened the hole, made a mounting bracket and trimmed the opening in teak. After I took this pic I realized all the stuff was visible behind the TV. I have since painted it all flat black.

Black Pearl...what kind of mount did you use with the Samsung? Does is still pull out and swivel?

If you look at some of the new boats, not all Flat screens are flush mounted. Have you ever seen a flush mounted flat screen at home? I did the same swap on my boat. I have a little pit of an advantage as there is divider the sticks out a few inches aft of the TV that hides the fact that it is not flush mounted.

For mounting, I got 2 sturdy, white, metal brackets from Lowes/Depot. I painted them black, then drilled the hole to match the back of the TV, then bolted the bracket to the existing wooden base. This way I kept all the swivel features that I liked about the old one. I also installed a shelf behind the new TV for extra storage. It's about 4 inches of the base to allow for the TV wiring. This is big storage area. It hold lots of blanket, towels, etc, now.

There is a gap at the top. I was going to put in a upholstered filler, but as it is all black behind that, I haven't found it be worth the effort.

It has been one the best boat projects I have done. The TV is SOOO much brigher, better, pics, digital signals work better for us, etc.

Hey Jeff, I used a ceiling mount. Turned it upside down, had to modify it a bit with a sawsall. Got the idea from Jamie a few weeks back. It just mounts up side down on the original board the 13 mounts on. It still swivels, pulls out and locks as well. I bought the mount on ebay ($35.00). Very sturdy.

I like the 19". I think any upgrade to the TV is a good one. If the 15" will fit flush I would lean towards the 15 if it will fit flush and swivel...

Ceiling mount turned upside down makes sense I will look around..

Is there 12VDC where the TV is mounted or is it just 120 V AC. The Polaroid and Naxa are 12VDC which I kind of like.

Thanks!! I learned a lot already on how easy a project this may be..

The 15" will fit good width wise but is only about 11' high leaving about a 4-5" gap on the top. There is no 12volt behind the TV but you can run an adaptor from the galley 12volt or just run the genny while on the hook. Best buy has a adapter for $25. That's what I use in the cockpit now for another 19 inch. The TV fits perfect behind the captians seat.

This is exactly what I just did.

I know one thing. If I was looking at a boat to purchase, I'd MUCH rather see the 19" in place.

I actually changed the TV in our 340. I went with this one:
http://www.cobyusa.com/?p=prod&prod_num_id=356&pcat_id=2001
It was the largest I could find to fit the opening. I didn't like the look of it sticking out. This one fits the opening perfectly, I'll see if I can find some pics. I removed the base and mounted it to the forward cabinet 'wall' using an omnimount swing arm. This allows it to pull out and swivel around to be viewable from everywhere. One of the main reasons for the change was to have a built in DVD player. The original TV had a big slot at the bottom that appeared to accept some sort of video cartridge.
