08 260 sd POWER QUESTION

First off there is no such thing as too much power in a boat. But then there is the matter of how deep your pockets are. If they are real deep then why not get the 496 Magnum? It's only $10k list over the standard 350 MAG.:smt001 But if it were me I wouldn't opt for either the 6.2 or the 496 MAG.

I had the 5.0 in my 240SD.The 260SD is only 500 pounds heavier than the 240SD and the standard 350MAG more than compensates for the greater weight. I felt the 5.0 was adequate even with the boat full up capacity wise (12 people). The only reason I would pay for more power is if I wanted the best hole shot I could get for watersports purposes.

Of course all of this is just one person's opinion.

Thanks Dave....almost the same price due to economy for the 350 or the 6.2.

If they're dropping the price of the 6.2 that much, why can't they also drop the price of the 350-powered boat? Or, does the 6.2 equipped boat have less options? Are you sure they're the same model year?

Aside from that, I'd opt for the 350. I've run a lot of different SR's with different engine configurations; the difference in power is negligible and not worth the money - IMHO. :smt001

The best answer would be ---- it depends.

How many are you going to have on aboard?
Are you going to be doing a bunch of water sports or cruising?
More info on where/how you are going to be boating would help.

Thanks All....
Between 5-8 mostly older teens 17-19...losts of tubing some ski\wakeboarding. I am hearing the differenc is negligable top end but for an extra $1400 I'll take the extra torque. Equip is essentialy the same but other boat has the 300 hp and a navman mounted in dash. this has the 320hp and the cd changer. I have a brand new gimble mount Garmin so I dont need the navman.

The 5.7 is a reliable engine.
I heard a few bad storys of the 6.2 not holding up well.

The 496ci is a very reliable powerfull engine.
Same mpg as the 5.7 up to 3000rpm and cruising faster.

Well, I've run many 240SD's and am very confident that the 350MAG is all the engine it needs. However, it seems as though you're leaning towards the 6.2 - and for $1,400 it's not a bad deal - unless of course you can get the 350MAG to come down more in price. However, one thing you don't want to be doing is second guessing yourself after you buy it. You don't want to be saying "Man, I wish I would have sprung for the extra $1,400" for the next 10 years. Go for it! As mentioned above, going bigger (to a point) in a boat never hurts. Ultimately, aside from whatever myself or anyone else says, it's your boat - you're the one making the payments. If it was me, and I was on the fence between the two engines, I wouldn't even hesitate - my boat new boat would have 320HP!
