454 mercruiser, v-drives
Good evening to all,
I am new to this forum and just purchased a 1990 sea ray 350 SUNDANCER with 454 v-drives. I am on Long Island in New York. This boat is spectacular inside and out but has one engine knocking away with low oil pressure- I need to pull the engine to rebuild it. I have been boating my whole life and have had many small boats with outboards, a 21’ I/o 350 day boat, a 26’ SUNDANCER with single I/o and a 27 SUNDANCER with twin I/o. This is my first inboard boat and a decent jump in size from the 270 and am looking for any advice in regards to expected maintenance. I am very mechanically inclined (I own an auto repair and restoration business) and have always done all my own work on boats from outboard rebuilds, complete engine rebuilds on other SUNDANCERs, multiple outdrive rebuilds, gimbals, and all that kind of stuff. So I’m not worried about how to do whatever this boat needs. My main question is what is recommended as normal maintenance as far as the inboard/shafts/rudders is concerned. I have zero experience with inboards but know that I never want an I/o ever again!!!! I always did outdrive oil and water pumps every year. I did gimbals, boots, shift cables every 3-5 years.
With the engine out is there anything I should do with the transmission? Something to check before I put the new engine in and realize I have an issue? Should transmissions be serviced every year or at a set amount of hours? Any other advice as far as prop shaft and rudders I should know about? I am looking forward to rebuilding this over the winter and the learning curve that comes with a big change in boats from last season- while trying to avoid any major mistakes with something I should have done or known about in the offseason. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

I change the oil on my transmissions every 3 years. Northern boater, generally light use compared to those Florida boaters.

In terms of other potential maintenance you may want to hop on SeaRay.com and grab the manuals for your boat. I believe it'll show you the recommended intervals for service.

Best of luck and welcome to CSR!

Congrats! The 350/370 are a great boat. If you have an engine out it would be a good time to service the shaft packings or better yet ad dripless shaft seals.

Seems to be a lot of good info in there. Thanks

Thanks. The records show that new dripless seals were installed 2 years ago. I will check them though once the motor is out
