Matt,it is a 3210 Garmin mounted on factory bail. I recessed the bail back into the dash. As far as the 3' from compass, have not had any problems,its almost 3'., and it is the fourth back up compass. I think 3' away from compass on a boat is hard find. Good luck

Dom, St. Croix @ Davit .com has a nice folding ladder that clips on to a transom D ring. I have a roll on system from them and the Q.C is great. Check it out. This ladder may be helpful if this becomes a habit .
