OK guys, has anyone replaced their old Clarion M5470 stereos? I would like to upgrade but am terrified of trying to route a new wired remote from the helm to the head unit. I want to replace the remote so I wont have a hole in the dash to fill. If anyone has experience with this specifically pictures it would be appreciated!

I replaced mine last year and purchased the Clarion MF1 RF REMOTE and left the original there. The RF remote works from almost 100 feet away.

The long search and negotiations are over and today I joined the club as the proud owner of a 2002 410 Monaco Edition Sundancer with twin Caterpillar 3126's. Thanks to the folks here who gave me some valuable information during the process, but most of all to Frank Webster who took the time to examine a ton of pictures, go over things he saw in them, spending a lot of time with me on the phone walking me through everything, putting my mind at ease about the move to diesels, and providing me with a list of dozens of great questions to ask during the inspection, survey, and sea trial. Not only did his insight help with the initial inspection, but also with great things to ask during the survey, and lastly to negotiate after the survey. I can't thank him enough.
Here she is:

Welcome aboard and what a beauty!

This season we will begin the search for the replacement for our beloved 2002 310. We are considering both the '98-'99 400DA and '00-'02 410DA (we are also considering 380's, but that's irrelevant at this moment). My wife and I are really leaning toward searching for the 400, as from photos, we really like the general look and layout a bit more than the 410DA. One thing that seems like it could change that outlook is I noticed that there is no port-side molded in step to the walk-around on the 400, and the drop-down step is in the way of the cockpit door, so it looks like you can't really use both at the same time. Since we would be using the step all the time to access the bow, I was wondering how you all deal with that situation, if you find it inconvenient, and what you found as workarounds. We are used to this feature on our 310, so I was surprised to notice it lacking on the 400.

I don't think you can go wrong with either boat especially powered with diesel. The advantage to the 400 from my aspect is the cockpit floor extension aft of the transom door which makes stepping from the boat to the dock much more convenient and safer. The 410 does not have this and you have to step down to the swim platform when going out of the transom door. Regarding the port step - I find it is not an inconvenience as it really doesn't restrict egress to and from the transom door. I do, however, like the hardtop 410 as the canvas top on both the 400 and early 410's is maintenance and expensive item.

I just put my cooler there and use it as my step. Works out great and doe not interfere with the door

Yes with the Clarion M303 with wired remote MW1 and RF wireless remote MF1. You are right routing the wired remote is a serious pain. I'll take you through it -
1. Assume head unit in same location as original
2. Need to remove the access panels along the starboard cabin side inside of the cabinets and route the wire along the existing wire harness.
3. Need to remove the aft head medicine cabinet on the starboard side. Fairly easy - cut sealant along frame, remove four screws from inside of frame and carefully pull out. There is a GFI outlet with the cabinet when it comes out but, in my case, had enough wire to allow removal and placement on the lav. Route the wire between the cabin access panel and the medicine cabinet; you will probably need something like a stick or stiff wire to pull the wire through with.
4. You can see wires going aft high and low from the inside of the cabinet. The high are going towards the helm the low go to the engine room. Cut the sealant and you can route the wires towards the helm.
5. Remove the Subwoofer next to the helm and you should be able to work the wire up there then on up to the helm.
While you are that deep into the boat's guts might as well get some better amplifier power cables (like 4 gauge) routed as the amplifier is just below the head unit behind the seat cushion; the OEM ones are simply not large enough to meet the amplifier's demand or host any power upgrades. Also I routed a TosLink optical cable with the other cabling so my television's audio is now a feature with the audio system.

Are you saying that when the step is down, that the cockpit door opens wide enough to be comfortable to walk by? I haven't noticed any hardtop 410's; must be on later models.

That sounds like an excellent solution!

Yes - no issues. Obviously, the door is a bit in the way but easily passable.

Just to chime in a bit. We were on the hunt for the elusive 410 hardtop when we found the 460. Costs were similar and most had hardtops and all had diesels.

The 460 is quite a bit larger than we need/want. We fell in love with a 460 we saw once, love the boat, but not really in our budget.

Totally understand. It is a little larger but has been a good fit. Let me know if there is anything in Texas you want me to peek at for you!

You can easily use both at the same time. You just can't lock the cockpit door open while the step is down, but it's a complete non-issue for us after 3 seasons. We usually have the step down and the door open when we're at the dock, and neither of them get in our way.

Side-note: why no '97s? The '97 400 is identical to the '98-'99. Any reason to restrict away from the '97s?

OK, Will do! (Hoping to keep the search a bit more local though!)

Good to know! And no, I am not discriminating against a '97... !

Excellent choice of boats! I have a 2001 410 Sundancer that is currently for sale in Ohio (Lake Erie). It is gas-powered, but a very clean and updated boat and has prove to be perfect for our type of boating. The only reason we are selling it is that we are getting into the "college years" and know that we won't be using it very much this coming season. I'm not trying to sell it to you... though it is listed with a broker ;) but rather just to tell you how much we enjoyed this boat. In my opinion, it is one of the greatest layouts Sea Ray has developed. We liked the 400DA as well, but after getting onto a 410, we said "wow." Just a few minor differences that really pushed us to the 410 over the 400--both in the cockpit and the cabin. That said... different strokes for different folks. I don't think you can go wrong with either boat. Good luck!
