Official 390 E.C. Thread

Gee that looks real familiar. A lot like my boat when I got from my dad. Also - beware of of fresh paint on old engines. Especially when everything is the same color including hoses!

gotta love the krylon rebuild. I've seen a lot of those in ads, especially on 3208's.

CAT 3208 MARINE. The only thing marine on those engines are the heat exchangers. Lots of bare steel with a thin coat of yellow paint. Oil pans rust through all the time. As I rebuilt my CAT engines all I could say was OMG! What were they thinking?

Doc

I was thinking of looking at it one more time and giving him a lower offer

he claims to be a diesel tech and he moved to florida and left the boat here

You just want the engines or the whole boat? Internally my engines and transmissions were perfect - only 1200 hrs. I still had to spend almost $10K on external parts to bring the engines back to better than new condition. That does not include my weeks of labor and the fact that I have a really well equipped shop to do it all in.

Is that the one in Queens that was asking $27k and sat what great shape it was in?

I think its in the bronx.
the pics from the ad have to be from years prior

the pics what I posted is what it looks today. it sat without a cover for a while all the seats and seat back are all cracked. its a shame

That one with the diesels has been on Craigslist forever.

It just looked so sad.
Its the new versions with the fiberglass seat bases.

It it looked like someone tried to break in the door was flexed. A bad lock was screwed into the tracks.

After er I sent him the pics he took 5 k off his price.

That one cracks me up too. The seller can't even be bothered to put any info in his ad. At that price, I'm assuming everything's shot, so he'll be lucky to find someone to take it away for free.

I have another question for you guys here. All this stringer rot from leaks has me wondering. How is the water getting into the stringer core in the first place? Is there some inherent design flaw in the 390? Are the stringers not encased in the forward bilge? I'm just trying to understand why. Is it inevitable on a 390 that the stringers will get wet and rot, or if I find a good one can it be prevented?

The more I look at the 390, the more I want one, and I b plan on checking a few more out, but doc has me a bit worried with all the rot talk.

The stringers are NOT encased forward of the bulkhead. The backside of the plywood stringers faces foam filler that usually gets wet and holds water. Does not matter if they are encased or not. Water will find its way in. Yes you can protect them. Keep them dry! You can inject wood that is not rotted with di sodium oxyborate salts. Google Injecta and BoraCare. When I had my boat apart I treated every piece of exposed wood with BoraCare. My new stringers are encapsulated with glass and epoxy.

There is a space between the bottom of the stringer plywwod and the hull. Water fills this void and gets soaked up in to the plywood. See photo below. Shows the foam behind the stringer, the bulkhead repair where the rotted section was. The space below the water tank floor was filled with foam and was totally saturated with water. This was also the case aft of the bulkhead. But that area was filled with salt water. The stringers are damp but not rotted. Once the water gets in the wood expands and created more cracks in the glass where more water can get in. I did not replace any of the foam filler and put in inspection ports so you can see if any water is getting in the voids.

I called Taylor made talked to Theresa to order Glazing vinyl for the windshield. Theresa informed me that i had to deal with a Sea Ray dealer they could no longer be ordered through her at Taylor. After calling a Sea Ray dealer I was informed that it would take 2 to 3 weeks to get the glazing vinyl. is there any where else it could be ordered from in order to be able to receive it quicker that you guys know of
