I had my last day of work yesterday. I get to meet with HR today to turn in my work badge, then I'm officially retired.
I've been a union electrician for 36 years, working the last 13 in maintenance on the Hanford site. It's home to the worlds first nuclear reactor where they made the plutonium to help end WW2.
I am 58 and was planning on retiring at 59 1/2, but my job is covered under the presidential mandate for federal workers, and I made the decision after meeting with a couple financial advisors that it's time to go enjoy life.
My wife is 3 years older than me and will be retiring at the end of December.
I'm pretty excited for this next phase in life, and hoping it's not a short phase. :)

Awesome! Congratulations! I don't believe I will ever retire until I retire from the planet.

Congratulations! Enjoy it thoroughly!

I have plenty to do around the house, now I will be able to get that stuff done and have time for a lot more boating in the spring through fall. We also like to travel, camp and fish.
We have a truck camper and aluminum fishing boat that will be getting a lot more use.

Congratulations !!.... I retired at 55 and lasted 2 years... we travelled, bought our current boat but after the 2 years I got bored...ended up buying a small manufacturing business....basically the same thing I did my whole life but with out the size stress. I dont even think about completely retiring any time soon. Some of us are wired differently I guess...no pun intended ...well sort of :)

Congratulations, well done. I sold my business and retired at 55. Been 2 years now, and have not looked back once or been bored a single day. It is really quite spectacular. Hope you have the same experience.

My ex wife took everything and I had to start over. Set my planned retirement date back ten years. Litigation was $170,000 for the privilege of loosing most of what I worked for as well as alienating my children.
The good news is that three years ago I married the most amazing woman who I have ever met and together we overcome any obstacles. My wife had a similar experience with her ex husband and we know that no matter how difficult things can get we will always be together.

I wish you happiness and fulfillment in your retirement endeavors.

Good for you I put in 32yrs. at a power plant working 138k on down. Glad you made your tour of duty unscathed. In the end I think we all need a little push to call it.

Congratulations on your retirement! I sold my business three years ago and have been phasing out working only 20 hours per week now, will be fully retired end of March 2022 at 60 years old. Next adventure is to buy a Motor Home and travel in winter boat in summer.

Congrats!!, my son is a union electrician in NYC great job. I retired at 49 from Law enforcement after a few years now my wife wants to start some sort of veterans assistance program whether it be homes, medical assistance something like that but it wouldn’t feel like work to us. Enjoy some time off.

Good job Greg. Congratulations!

BTW, are you going to be in the Lighted Boat Parade Dec 3-4? There's a mandatory skippers meeting the Wednesday before at CIYC at 6.

Also, if you are at all interested in volunteering to do some charity work for Benton Franklin Humane Society next summer let me know. It won't involve handling dogs but will involve some fund raising for a big event next October. I met with 2 ladies from the board yesterday and set some plans in place. I think it would be fun and not involve a ton of time.

I can relate. My plan was 55 until the recession of 2008 and a divorce 11 years ago. I gave her 1/2 of everything to keep it simple, even though she only contributed 25%. Kind of regret that now. I've rebuilt, and then some.

@wyrman Congrats!! Enjoy!!

I will have the boat decorated and back in the water by early next week at the latest. I called the yacht club and signed up but the guy didn't have details on the meeting, thank you for that info.
I'm going to hold off on doing any volunteering at the moment, I know 100% that I will be super busy, for a while anyways.
Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Congratulations! As an IBEW member, I am so happy for you!

my best friend in the IBEW had planned on retiring March 2022 at 58. I ran his pension numbers (defined benefit plan) and he decided to retire March of 2021 at 57.
He passed October 20, 2021. Take nothing for granted, there may not be a tomorrow, so glad he enjoyed his retirement for the 7+months he had. He was so happy!

joy it!
