The "virus" What are your thoughts

@yobub it's very hard to get a solid read on this without the politics and media spin.

If this is "just" the flu, shutting down Italy, National Guard in NY and extreme travel bans being placed by many corporations (mine included), this seems extreme. To me it appears those in power know more about COVID-19 than they are saying.

I've prepared my family for supply chain interruptions. I've tried to find non USA reporting but deciding fact vs fiction is difficult. I've read it'll cause severe permanent lung damage. It may be too soon to tell.

Agree. The Mayor can’t call up the National Guard. Only the state Governor can do that under specific legal guidelines.

I don’t know why the Mayor was interviewed about that. Media should be at the Governor’s Office.
Correct, the mayor cannot deploy the national guard. Governor Cuomo can, and did so.

Why is it weird to interview a mayor about activities in the town he's been elected to serve? He would have information about it. Even it he does not have power to deploy militia, he has knowledge of the situation in his town. People like to hear from their local elected officials.

The Guard can play many emergency roles; clean up, medical support, evacuation. As I stated before, I don't know what specific actions the Guard is expected to take relative to the containment zone since the zone is so far not intended to curtail freedom of movement.

b,

First, I appreciate a good conversation, so my next comments are not meant to be critical. Your points are very valid.

I never said the Mayor should not have been interviewed concerning the National Guard being deployed to his community. Usually reporters discuss an upcoming interview with a person before going live. If the Mayor did not have any answers, why put him on the spot?

From the previous post, it was explained the Mayor did not seem to have answers because the mission for the Guard was not explained with clarity.
The media should, then, get clarity. It is not often the military is deployed inside the US. The mission is usually clearly defined by our government officials such as disaster relief. That is a scary thought.

Since the Mayor cannot call them up and appears to not have clear answers, the media should be at the Governor’s office demanding those answers: Why are there people wearing military uniforms (maybe with rifles) wandering around our neighborhoods? Why can’t the civilian police and Sheriff handle this mission?

As a military reservist myself, I get activated to perform a variety of tasks. However, I have a clearly defined mission each time. The Guard has a clearly defined mission. Maybe the Mayor doesn’t know it. Maybe he knows, but did a poor job explaining it. The mission should be explained to the local community.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist. Not trying to turn this into anything more than what it is.

Simple, but important questions.

That was a very good point you made. I hope I was able to clarify mine a little better.

Well I dunno but the WHO says COVID-19 can be 'contained' as opposed to the flu we all know. They say that is un-containable. I can think of only a couple reasons for the Guard...contain the people/virus literally, maybe manpower/equipment for something like massive spraying operation, maybe panic(and what comes with it) control, maybe trucking bodys to the incinerators. Sorry guys, that last one sounds terrible I know, but....we might have to do what we gotta do.:(

Just found this after I posted https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/n...s-back-to-one-attorney/ar-BB112jj6?li=BBnb7Kz

The timing of all of this couldn't be worse for me as I go through chemo treatments for a recently diagnosed case of prostate cancer. This puts my immune system in very poor condition and I'm going to be very succeptible to any type of infection.

Honey, would get my dust masks out of the garage please?

A personal update: I've been carrying a couple of N95 masks in my bag since this thing first broke. Just in case.

Just boarded a flight and behind me a guy is hacking and coughing. Loud. Now I'm the guy on the plane with the mask. Almost got off, but it's a 12 hour drive instead of a 2 hour flight, so I'll hope for the best.

Just shut down my kid's old high school over a suspected case. Waiting for test results. WTF.

A suburb near me is closed for two weeks...due to a confirmed case. That puts them into spring break, so the kids are out a month.

GFC - if you don't have masks, and cant find any in the store (N95), check with your doctors office, they probably would share.

William & Mary and UVA, are now online only! They are sending the kids home. Local schools are looking to do the same. IF your kids are sick, KEEP THEM HOME! My wife and the school is not the place for your sick child while you go to play or work!

This will kill small business in our area as well as all the economy. Now some politicians want us to give employees paid sick leave if they get the illness, that on top of a minimum wage of $15 per hour! HOW, If I take a hit!

“...just a flu...”

When was the last time the Fed issued financial stimulus to the economy due to the “flu”?

Yet this has a 1% mortality rate and most deaths in US were in nursing home in Seattle.

WTF?

It’s my kids old school also.

Many many colleges are shifting to remote instruction only. Some schools are also closing dorms, others are saying the kids can stay in the dorms if they need to, but can go home if they want. Typically the schools are saying this will be a minimum of a month, but it varies by school.

You probably could have auctioned it off for a hefty sum when he started coughing. I would of been bidding, for sure.
