40 sedan bridge forum

just throwing it out again, I would like to replace the neutral switches in the gear shifter housing, they seem to act up. Sometimes I have to fiddle around with the shifter until the starboard engine finally starts. Did anybody else have the same issue?
Sea ray doesn't sell the switches anymore, does anybody know where to get them?

Try spraying contact cleaner on the neutral safety switch. That stuff works miracles.

I tried it with WD40 what I had available and it seems to work better now but I really would like to change the switches out. Last time I plaid with the shifter for over 20 minutes out in a cove and felt a little panic coming up, if you know what I mean....
It seems like those switches are hard to come by, I can't find them anywhere. The Sea Ray part number is 733717 but that doesn't help either....

I have a water leak somewhere under my galley floor, I think. I can hear the pump pressurizing the system and then a 'hiss' from where the fitting or tubing is leaking. The 'hiss' seems to come from under the galley floor under the cabinets. I removed the step to look around the A/C unit to no avail, climbed in the floor storage in the galley to no avail, checked access area by sump box to no avail and climbed in (!) the storage area under berth in guest stateroom. I can see some tubing but no fittings or leak in each area. Water was in galley floor storage area and void under guest berth. I tried to get under the cabinets in the galley but was unsuccessful. I could feel around the galley sink and hookups but did not feel the source of the leak.

Has anyone had a similar problem and solution? Or suggestions?

The cabin collection sump is under that guest stateroom inner bunk. There is a sump pump and float switch in that sump. Is there water collected in there? If you are leaking water anywhere in the cabin, it will end up there. Also there are two water fittings right in front of where the water lines go past that sump. Those two fittings branch the hot and cold water off the main trunk and run to the galley sink. Those fittings on my boat were leaking and I had to replace them. There are no other fittings until you get to the shower sump in the hall. All the fittings for the two heads and the anchor locker are right there in front of the shower sump. There are lots of them there. Looks like you already checked all them.

I am getting my dinette cushions and port sofa cushions redone with new padding. They had broken down to nothing. So I removed them to take to the shop. Just thought I'd pass on that the are all held in with screws from the underside. Forward dinette screws are accessed just by opening the doors underneath. Aft dinette cushion has two where you slide out the storage shelf and two up in that small hole in the second picture. Bring a long screwdriver for those two. You will see five screws up there but only the inner two hold down the cushion as I found out the hard way. Bench seat is easy. Just remove the skirt and six screws hold it in.

There are a couple of Sea Ray 40 SB for sale in my area but both are with the 7.4 engines. The asking price is reasonable but I am not sure if the boast would be under-powered with those engines.
Any comments and opinion?
Thanks

IMO with all the stern weight in this boat, 400HP+ engines are needed to mantain an effective cruise. I would suggest you sea trial gas and different diesel options to see the firsthand differences. If you are doing any coastal runs in various seas, diesel is my only recommendation.

I don't have any experience with the gas engines, so I can't comment on that. However, I have the 350HP Cat 3116 engines (which may really be 340 HP) and they are more than enough power for my needs. I came back from a trip yesterday and was doing 20-21 knots at 2300 RPM cruise. I top out at 26 knots at WOT (30mph) which is at 2800 RPM.

I know there's a youtube video of a guy doing a WOT test on gassers with this boat. He seems to be moving along OK.

Thank for the comments. Unfortunately there is no currently 40 SB diesel for sale in my area that I can test drive.

You are welcome to come east and test drive mine. Then you would just need a way to get it back! The price is negotiable.

I should say I have not rum the 400DB with the gassers. That being said we moved from a 38' Regal bridge boat with gas to our current boat. That Regal was very under powered with V8 gas engines. I would do my best to find a diesel boat to run and compare. (Unless on a lake or smaller body of water).

Bill, Does the storage shelf come completely out to access the screws?

It doesn't separate from its tracks, but it pulls out far enough to clear the end of the cabinet and easily see and reach the two screws on that side. There is a vertical separation panel/support in the center of the compartment. So you can't get to the two portside screws through that end anyway. You have to remove the sofa seat and stick your shoulder/arm up into that hole to reach the other two screws.

truk911-

This is the flag pole that was factory mounted on our 2003 400db, not sure if this is your current set up or not. After trying to use one of the Magma grill mounts, I found out that the flag pole mount isn't the same size as a rod holder - it's approximately 1/2" or 3/4" smaller than a standard rod holder. The teak flag pole that I have (also believed to be from the factory) has a tapered end that fits very snug. I've ran in very rough conditions with the flag installed and have not had an issue. Let me know if any additional info is helpful. Also, we are in Dusable Harbor so feel free to come take a look anytime if it helps.

Thank you for the pictures! I ended up installing a Taylor Made Stainless Steel Flag Staff. It is surface mounted to the starboard side of the trunk on the top of the transom. We're in BURNHAM (P Dock) if you are ever cruising through. I'll look for you next time I am in DuSable.

I may know of one (400DB) but I am not familiar with a "test drive" for a boat someone is only thinking about. The process is usually do your research, find a suitable boat in the condition you want, make an offer, once accepted you get to ride on the sea trial. Throw a hull and engine survey in there and you are buying a boat. In a private sale you may get to ride on the boat before making an offer. If you are really serious about a diesel 400DB, send me a private message and I can give you some information...

My sliding door is starting to squeak and roll rough on the tracks. I'd like to rebuild and replace as needed. Anybody have a source for parts?

I have to do mine as well, Paul. Same symptom - feels like rolling on rocks. But I won't do mine until it gets cooler in the Fall.

I did mine. The local MarineMax ordered the rollers. Not to bad of a job. Did it on the dock in about 45 minutes. I believe the set was about $65 but I could be mistaken. I'll try to find the reciept and the part #
