Jl audio M 7.7's or Fusion 7.7's speakers in cockpit 340 sundancer

IL makes great equipment. I have a 12W7 powered by a 750/1 with some 7.7's on the way.

Brewster16-any tricks on using the jigsaw to cut the fiberglass? I put down duct tape and use a rotozip. Was afraid the jigsaw would chip out the fiberglass. My 400 does have wood behind the fiberglass on the cockpit speakers.

Calling all audio experts here...
I am upgrading my stereo and debating between this 2 brands of speakers, planning on installing 3 sets of 7.7 coaxials and 2 10" subs powered by 2 alpine 5 ch amps( which i was told deliver great power).all in the cockpit area...

i like the led lights on the fusion but i would go that route only if the sound is comparable to the quality of JL Audio which is a proven brand of quality sound...
Has anyone compared this 2 brands ?
how much should i pay for labor installing this?
Thanks in advance for your opinion , this is a major investment for me and dont want to mess it up...

thanks

So, i got an estimate to just install the equipment mentioned above, including a remote control ( wired) , network to control system with iphone thru Fusion app( head unit) .
very reputable and knowledgeable marine installer, totaling $4000 , does this sound right? With all due respect to all professional installers out there, i think this guy is out of his mind.
am i wrong ?

Depends, what is the install? A simple swap out? He is smoking crack. Running all new power and speaker lines, cutting new or expanding holes? He's only smoking pot. All of that plus the equipment? He's in the ballpark, but I still wouldn't pay it.

I know someone that paid close to that amount for his stereo on a 420. When the installer pulled the speaker wires, they somehow cut/broke part of the Sea Ray factory wiring harness. I don't remember what exactly ...but several things quit working on his boat. Come to find out the installer was a sub-contractor and did not have any insurance. It cost $8,000 to fix the problem and the interior fit and finish was never the same. Had to file a lawsuit and in the end the new stereo system cost him the loss of using his boat for several weeks and about $6000.

Now I am very skittish anytime I have to pull a wire.

Pretty standard pricing I would say. Boat installs take time, lots of time. I do my own but it takes a long time to find all of the nooks and crannies to run wire. No installer is going to use anything less than 4 gauge OFC for an amp install and 10-12 gauge for speakers. I ran 1/0 OFC (think battery cable only bigger) for my amps (3).

that's why I went with more reasonably priced equipment......plenty of other lesser priced stuff that does as good a job as the Fusions and JL's of the world without costing you an arm and a leg.

My upgrade will be just under 5k. That includes enlarging 4 holes to add 7.7s, running wire to my arch and installing 2 enclosed 7.7s, and installing a 800/8 amp and a 10 JL sub. Most of that cost is equipment. Labor portion will be $1450. The guy is meticulous.

Well, as is always the case, you get what you pay for. If you're happy with it, that's all that matters. Personally, there are differences between manufacturers. Even within a company they have different value lines. I'm pretty happy with the JL's and I enjoy the installation process.

as always^^^but what I'm saying is that I'd put my 4 Wet Sounds speakers and 10" sub (w/MB Quart 5 channel amp at $168.00 driving them) at $925.00 for everything up against any other 4 speaker/1 sub/1 amp setup as far as sound goes....you can only get SO clean and SO loud...the human ear can only process so much. We'll hafta get together at LOTO and compare systems.....and have a couple cold ones of course.

My .02c installed 2-770's. 2-650's, 1-10" sub all JL and a JL 600/6 amp it will blow your mind how loud and clear it is . EVERYONE thinks it's a $7000-$8000 system. My local audio installer/dealer (I didn't buy from him) tells me Wet sounds isn't even in the same ballpark they even skimp out on packaging and he gets more call backs than any other brand for disappointments.
this is my second boat with this set up and letting friends hear it sold another 4-5 set ups. Sorry JL /fusion are top dogs right now.

To each his own. I'm not saying nor do I think DoOver is either, that my choice is better than yours. What he was saying and I concur, that Value is in the eye of the beholder. I an outdoor environment, attaining absolute sound is a moving target, more often literally. That is not to say you can't enjoy a good system like yours, but you would be surprised at how really good a well matched and properly tuned "inexpensive" system will sound. It may not be the "in" name brand for the moment, but it is excellent sounding and something that many more can justify, afford and more importantly willing to spend on a nice Sounding system.

Back when I was in car audio competition, there were "brands of the month". All were good, but those ones were using drawing higher dollars to purchase. Often times "lesser" systems won! I'm not putting down any brand, each has its merit, if you like JL/fusion etc, great, it's good equipment. But there are many, many good pieces of equipment that are 1/2 sometimes 1/4 the cost, that sound excellent, but you don't have bragging rights because it's not the flavor of the month.

When I say execution, design and proper tuning is more important than any piece of equipment, I mean just that. Proper installation and attention to detail is worth more than the equipment, I'll bet your installers would agree on that.

Back then Rockford Fosgate, Alpine, PPI, Soundstream, Phonenix Gold were the names and many more. Many of these are laughed at today, but believe me they were great in the day. Honestly, many lines within these companies are still great. SeaRay is now installing Rockford Fosgates in new boats...

The point is, enjoy what you have, really, it's about the music and our boats and getting two of them together!

I run PPI Powerclass amps in my boat. Still love em and still going strong. Have some Kicker Resolution components in the cabin too. Sounds better than home.

Ok Getting another Estimate From somebody else now, these guys have been in business since 1988 in the Miami area, keep you posted ... I ain't paying $4000 for labor , on a job that can be done in 20 hour, did they go to law school for this ?? $4000 / 20 hours= $200/ hour ? This was my first estimate just in labor...

Magstang1, I love PPI's! I sold the last of my old Art series about a year ago, hated to but it was time. Those old amps are great!
