Trip to the Keys

Alex,
What will be your arrival and departure dates? 12/30- 1/2 ?

That's correct, Steve. I'm planning to arrive on 12/30 and depart 1/02, total of 3 nights. I'm still working on my stops along the way and have an option to add an extra night to KW, but only to arrive earlier. I know one thing for sure is that I will need to take off no later than Jan 2nd to make comfortable trip back to FTL with a break in between.

Hey guys, I just want to let you know that my wife and I have discussed the docking situation in KW and we decided to book a slip at Stock Island marina. Considering the circumstances (and the fact that it's New Years), it seems like the best option for us.

I can't offer much insight on anchorages or mooring field in KW, but I can tell you for sure that you will have no problems whatsoever getting a cab from downtown to Stock Island at 2am or 4am or 6am... And Stock Island is a pretty neat and boater-friendly community. I kind of lost some respect for Duval St when they built Baby Gap there...

Sound like one hell of a good time. Enjoy!

That's great to hear. Thanks for your input.

I just made reservations with Stock Island Marina for 3 nights (12/30-01/02).

Just make sure you eat at the Hogfish Bar and Grill..... the Hogfish Sandwich is Outstanding!!

Thanks Marshall. I'll add it to my "Where to eat list". I remember you guys like the Keys, if you happen to be there at the same time, don't be a stranger.

We are booked at Stock Island 12/30 and 12/31. Given the difficulty of reservations - we wanted to get locked in as well.

Looks like a nice Marina, maybe a good thing to be away from Duval street.

I was thinking the same thing, Mark. It's always good to be in a nice and quite place after running around all day.

I second the Hogfish... off the beaten path, great vibe... if they are out of Hogfish (it happens), Lobster BLT is excellent too. Also, best cheesesteak south of Philly in case you need a hangover cure!

Do you guys have recommendations where would you go for New Years dinner/party in KW?

I'm living vicariously through you guys but thought you should ping "jff" (aka Jason)... he had his previous 48DA shipped from Lake Lanier to the gulf. I believe he started in Sarasota then to Miami and made a trip from Miami to Key West and had many stops along the way.

Thanks Robert. I just looked at the LPI thread and remembered that this is the place I wanted to stop by as well. Oh man, so many places and so little time....

The idea of going to LPI marina just went out of the window. I just spoke to them and apparently it's just a flat fee of $600 per night for my boat and $1200 for larger boats. If you think that the $ is the only kicker, nope...NO CHILDREN and no pets allowed. Now it makes sense why deers are going to the bar......We have kids with us, so got to cross it off the list, for this trip at least.

Ok, we are booked as well for Stock Island for 12/30-1/2

Excellent!!!

We should ask them keeping us closer together when they give us slip assignments.

We have stayed at Little Palm Island several times. Would not consider it a marina, rather slips and side tie pier to secure your boat while you are on the island. Part of the "atmosphere" is a very small number of people on the island at any time. 20 or so cottages.

If you are staying in one of the cottages, then there is no charge for the slip - as long as no one is sleeping on the boat.

I can go on for a long time about the place - a truly special place that is worth a visit if you don't mind spending the coin.

Couple of examples:

Once you arrive, your host makes your presence known - often times walking by the bar, etc, introducing you to staff. From then on you never sign a ticket, you don't worry about charging back to your room. It is NOT all inclusive, those watermelon jalapeno margaritas show up on the bill when you leave.

If you are on the beach, wade 30-40 yards out in the surf, decide you want a glass of champagne, wave at the attendant on the beach, they wade out to you with a glass of champagne.

At dinner one night, my wife remarked that it would be cool to be eating on the beach. The waiter overhead, few minutes later the maître d was at our table asking if we wanted the table adjacent to the water edge, or actually in the edge of the surf - next nite we ate on the beach.

They have a great beach fully stocked with paddle boards, hobie cats, etc for your use. I really prefer being there when the water is a bit warmer to enjoy the beach part.

If you want to fish for tarpon off the dock, someone will appear with fishing tackle and bait.

Food is over the top good.

Downside, 1 bar, 1 restaurant. For us it is great for 2 nights - after that we get a bit bored.

We will be back there in May.

That's a great review, Mark. It sure sounds like a place to stop at. I would have to find the time when we don't have kids with us.

Ah - those watermelon jalapeno margaritas - worth going back to Little Palm Island for those alone. Worth pointing out for those who are interested - there is a 25% ($150) discount there with Marinalife.

That's for sure worth mentioning! Thank you....
