40 sedan bridge forum

Looks like you have the part number now. Are you changing both belts? If so let us know any special gyrations you go through to replace the starboard belt.

Both. I don't have a history of the last change, and want some piece of mind. I'm not a small guy, so it should be interesting

I have done the belts on my boat 5 times since 2003. It's not too bad, but I have always had another person to assist. For the most part the 2nd guy just hands me tools. The real help is with the tensioner during the new belt installation. I would be down wrapped around the front of the engine, the 2nd guy would use the bar and keep the tensioner pushed so that I could route the belt properly. I can do both belts in about an hour now.

Any issue with a low hour <300 2001 400 SB with Cummins 6CTA 8.3M diesels? Having only owned gas powered boats, I have always heard that lack of use is not a good thing with diesels.

Anyone ever have any bad experiences with low hour older diesels or have any comments?
As long as all the maint. was done as it should have been done, light use is not a factor at all, especially on an always freshwater boat. Good luck

I finished replacing both belts yesterday. The Stbd engine was the harder of the two, but overall not difficult. I learned a few tips, that may help out.

The overflow can mounted on the bulkhead was in the way to remove the belt shroud. What seemed like the lesser of two evils was to loosen and move engine coolant tank. Keeping all hoses connected, I tied a line to hold it up.

3 bolts hold it together:
--10MM head on the front
--10MM through the Alternator Bracket
--15MM through the Motor Mount

You can find the location of each bolt by inspecting the shroud housing. The brackets are held on with large rivets. Find those, and the bolts are not far.

Lastly, you need to install the 15MM bolt a little blind, and dropping it off the socket will ruin your day (searching for it in the bilge). I ended up taking a little electrical tape to hold it to the socket. This made installation much easier for me.

On the Port engine, you need to remove the fire extinguisher tank.

Have Fun!!

Nice write up, but I can't believe there is that much difference between our boats.....1/2 to 1 hour job for both, nothing needs to be removed to get the shrouds off.

Id bet its a rigging difference. If the overflow was mounted 1 inch outboard, I would not need to remove anything. Regardless, it did not add much time.. I can do the job now in under an hour

Good job, Paul. Thanks for the tips. By the way, my boat was delivered to me without the starboard belt cover. Belts on both my engines look new so I suspect when they were replaced, the tech told the owner to leave it off since its a pain to remove/re-attach. Now that I have removed the port belt cover, I plan to keep it off as well. I also had to remove the halon tank to get the port belt cover out of there.

FYI, I completed my port alternator install and updated post #532 so all the info would be in one place.

Joining "The Club"...

Signed the purchase agreement today on a very clean, fresh water 2001 400 Sedan Bridge with Cummins 6CTA 8.3M diesels. Survey is next Tuesday, so if everything checks out, we should close on the deal in early August. We can't wait until we are officially members of "The Club.

Welcome! We'll need pictures to fully accept you on board.

Good luck with the survey. If you run into anything squirrelly ask about it. Some of us recently went through surveys as well.

Thanks Bill. I will post pictures after the closing, I don't want to jinx anything. I am sure to have questions about the survey and many questions once we
take ownership.

I appreciate your knowledge and support!

How do you start and stop the genny. For some reason I need to open the deck hatch and reach down to do it. Shouldn't it run from the panel?

Mine operates from the panel in the Salon. Do I understand yours does not? There should be two switches adjacent to the blower switch at the top of the panel, pretty much on the center line?

At the panel, are you holding down the preheat switch while you push the start switch? The start switch will do nothing unless the preheat switch is being pressed to energize the start switch.

Unfortunately there is no preheat switch on the panel. The genny switch has a blinking light. It is only an on switch it appears to have no off switch. I guess I have to open the hatch and do it manually.

I just read through the 1996 400DB Owner's Manual Supplement. It says this (paraphrasing):

1. Press and release the Generator switch on the panel. This puts the generator in preheat mode and the light will flash for 30 seconds. At the end of 30 seconds the light will flash rapidly indicating you gotta start the generator right away or you have to start over.

2. When the light starts flashing the generator is ready to start. Press and hold the start switch until the generator starts. Then release the switch.

3. Once the generator is started the light will stay on.

To stop the generator, press the Generator switch until the generator stops.

Also (this sounds important), it says to start the generator from the generator mounted controls, the bypass switch on the side of the control box must be turned ON. When its ON, you can't start and stop the generator from the remote panel. So you gotta have that switch to OFF for the steps above to work from the remote panel.

Performance question...Cummins 6CTA 8.3M Speed Table?

Has anyone created a speed table for the Cummins engines? I am looking for RPM, Speed and Fuel Burn numbers at various RPM's for this setup.

I've read that 2600 is WOT and best cruise is 2200, but wonder what speeds and fuel burn those with this setup are experiencing.

This is the only set of performance curves I have found. Its at sbmar.com, which is a good site for you to read through before Tuesday.
