The big old 80's 340 owners thread

hello,
yes, i changed the small fram fuel filters. i guess sea ray considered that fuel filter to also be a water fuel separator.
well , i added two real mallory fuel / separator, was pretty easy. the total cost was about 100 $. i hope this solves my problem.
also suprised the boat has points. the small fram fuel filter cost 12$.
happy boating!!!!!!

does anyone know where u can get the marine mufflers? i blew the top off mine today!!!!!!!!!!!

wow........serious lesson learned today, i guess. i had done tune up, i had the gap to big on points,so motor was not
firing. then i readjusted points, checked wires again.
when i turned the key to fire motor, it blew the hatch above battery bank clean off. the my tool box flying , wrenches , etc, all
over the place!! i guess i was lucky it didn't catch fire. maybe i can replace, fiberglass on new top??
what a day. oh, my boat has Mallory ignition, just info.

I need to install an in hull Airmar transducer form my Garmin and the best place I could find was in front of the starboard engine by the bilge area. Is there an easy way to get to the hull without leaning on the engines? I heard there was an access door under the cabin steps but I think I need to take the steps out to see it. Also if someone has successfully installed the Airmar in another location please let me know. Thanks much for the help.

Hi, I also have the Garmin 740S and the Airmar in hull transducer. How did your installation go. Want to put mine in this weekend.

finally took a few pics of the 85 yesterday

and cleaned out the a/c shower sump...ick...not something I want to do often but the slime was so deep the float was stuck down

Oh yeah..
talked to one of the marina techs yesterday in reference to my toilet with the blue water
He said he knew of no place to add tablets or liquid ...was probably -100f antifreeze still in the system

so has anyone replaced thier switch and guage panels on the helm ??
all 3 of mine have the corners broken off beside the screws.
any sources ??

I know of several. They have many different styles to choose from. Look through a thread by techno graphic ( sp?) Towards the end

I had posted this a while back, but I wanted to make the switch now so ill ask again since I didn't see a response of actual numbers. Who is running 4 blade props. If you are, could you provide the stats on your props. Im looking to change over. Since I had my incident last year and replaced the 3 blade props, im not happy with the maneuverability of the boat. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Keith, I just had my props re-done using the prop scan process at Thomas Marine Propeller in Sacramento CA. They are 3 bladed, tuned to 16.5 x 16.5. This was a huge improvement for our boat. She comes out of the hole much faster and has much more lift at the stern, thus requiring less trim tab. I'm very happy. Most of the research I've conducted indicates a 3 blade prop is preferred on larger boats due to the blade area. I'm not sure a four blade will gain much; meaning I think I trust the experts here.

hello , i am running 4 blade props.
numbers, going from memory here, at 3000rpm , boat is running 26-27 mph on gps.
wide open, 3900-4000 rpm...think it was 32-33. now , this is really going from memory , as i don't run boat like that almost never!!
dont know what boat did with 3 blades. when i purchased boat , had 3 blades but needed repair. props were so bad, siad i need new props. so , i went with 4 blades , cost a little more.

I have 4 blades. 17x17 with a medium cup. 3000 RPM 21-22 kts (25 mph) , 3100 RPM 23-24 kts (28 mph) WOT 4400 RPM, The top speed is written in the log book which is on the boat. Funny thing, my old 3 blade props were 17x17 too. The 4 blades do have more bite around the docks and seems to be smoother at cruise.

New generator problem. 6.5kW quicksilver. Ran it overnight for AC, woke up at 9am with no power, but generator was still running. All breakers were still on, and shore power works. I read how with westerbeke generators folks have to replace their capacitors when this happens, but I couldn't find any in the QS parts list for mine. Is there a capacitor somewhere, if not where should I start the process of elimination? Thanks!!

sorry,,,i don't remember size.

but while boat was running ok , before it starts it stall out, it was running 26-27 mph at 3000.

then started its stalling out. driving me crazy and ruining what summer is left. i think there is junk in tank. i have replaced fuel filter, added separator water fuel separators, cap , rotor, plugs last yr. i give up.
i will post photo of props, but i know u want numbers.

If you're only getting to 4000 RPMs a wide open throttle (WOT) you are over-propped. These engines should turn 44-4600 at WOT. You could be hurting your engines.
