The big old 80's 340 owners thread

I added a 12v plug so I can charge my phone while on the hook. I took the 12v power from the light. Not enough for a heavy load but more than enough to charge my cell phone. 12v plug.jpg12v plug2.jpg12v plug3.jpg

Nice...I need to do that in the cabin and a higher amp one on the deck for a "toy inflator"

My first 340 question...
my water pump for the faucets cycles about every 15 to 30 seconds ...just a Brrrrrp.
and water is clean water is running to the bilge from under the house batteries.
I am assuming it is somewhere in the head sink area ...any notoriuos spots for pressure line leaks ??

And ...where does the toilet get it's water from
it's electric flush and has pretty blue water ... is there a place to put the blue chemical
in the supply I havent found yet ??

Sounds like you have found where the fresh water leak that's causing the pump to cycle is. Follow that trail. Most of the faucet connections on mine went bad and I replaced them with pecs. I don't know about the blue chemical. The water for the head comes from either the fresh water tank or the domestic connection. Does the blue water come out of the sinks?

Inflatable toy...?

no blue from the sink ..thats why I wonder if there is some sort of inline strainer type thing to put a tablet in

I'm not aware of any in-line filter added to any of these boats. Could have been added by a previous owner? Our boat was like Keith's, we had to replace most of the water connections. Our 1989 has a vac-u-flush so the water may not come from the same spot. Our toilet water supply comes through the wall behind the head and the water line runs under the shower pan through the center of the boat. There's zero access here. If I suspected that line leaked, I would tape two hoses together and pull in a new one. I'm not even sure that would work, but what else could you do? Over by the house batteries is where the San-x system is, right? Also the house water lines run through there. You should be able to remove the access panel in the aft berth on the starboard side and see where the leak is. Hope this helps. Rob

FYI, my pump ran for the first six months. I had leaks everywhere: at the cockpit hose bib, the head faucet, the water connection, the hose behind the water connection and hose bib, and the water pump check valve leaked pressure back into the tank.

Remember all that Jim's boat (1985) has a totally different cabin configuration than the '87-'89. His galley is on the opposite side so things won't be in the same place. The vacuflush heads use water from the tank but an electric flush often uses raw water.

the pump on my new boat ran all the time too and drove me nuts but I could not find a leak anywhere. It turned out to be a manual water pump at the galley sink that was plumbed to the water line and not directly to the tank. I removed it and capped the line....problem solved.

Jim, you are just going to have to search for the leak but remember you may not see water. And it could be the pump or the accumulator tank. If it is original its 28 years old and might need to be replaced. When I had my '89 340 I put in one of the new "on demand" pumps and eliminated the accumulator tank.

Thanks Shawn, I didn't realize that his model was different. It make sense about the water supply for the head. Rob

I believe the head uses raw water..guess I will look for something in the supply line this weekend where the blue stuff is added
and Shawn is correct...my boat is built opposite of the later models...more like a later express.

After really going though the boat last nite I found all of the original paperwork manuals service records and even the pre shipping inspection sheet from merritt island.
Has all of the original wiring and plumbing diagrams and winterization check lists and procedures under the deck panels.
lots of good info here and if anyone needs copies for the 1985 I would be happy to make them copies

Anyone ever change the zinc anode (part 810604) in their Quicksilver's heat exchange?
I can't even find that part available for sale anywhere.

Remove the plug from the heat exchanger and take it with you to West Marine and get the appropriate pencil zinc. It's a standard size.

What speed and RPMs do you all normally cruise at on-plane?
I'm wondering if i'm going too fast or too slow...

2800 rpm and 18 to 20 knts depending on waves and fuelwater ect.
