Hey guys/gals. 1994 350EB. 7.4l Bluewaters, v-dives, thunderbolt IV ignition. Just had a tune-up Plugs, wires, rotor, cap., timing set, carbs adjusted. Starts and idels fine. Took it out for a test run on Wednesday, ideled out of marine, put it up on plane ran fine at 3200rpm, all gages normal. Made a turn to port and the port engine rpm dropped off and heard a couple of backfires. Put it in idle and the port engine would surge and the tach was erractic. Gave it some gas and it seemed to be ok. Got back to port and shut it down and it started up again with no problems. Changed the engine fuel filter, no water present. Drained the bulked fuel filter, no water present.
Took it out today ran fine like before. Made a turn to starboard this time and it did the same thing. This time the engine died and would not restart. Came in on one engine and the port finally started just before docking. Anybody have any ideas, suggestions. etc. Carbs are Carter AFB with manual chock. Thanks. Mike

This only happens when you are on plane and turn? Are you talking a hard turn?

Either something is rubbing on the steering that shouldn’t be and the turning of the wheel is causing an interruption of whatever or the circumferential force of the turn is causing stress on something it shouldn’t. Double check that you secured the distributor cap, rotor and wires correctly from the tune up you did. Odds are if nothing was wrong before the tune up then whatever is wrong now is related to the recent work you did.

Did you have this problem before you did the tune up and replaced the parts you mentioned?

Might be some dirt, rust, etc. in the fuel tank that nicely stays on bottom of tank until you turn hard, then floats into the intake line. Good luck with this one, sound’s weird!

Only happens on plane and make turn. Does not matter if its a sharp or wide turn. Runs fine going straight.

Will re-check cap rotor and wires again.

The Carb float could be the problem. Thinking about swapping carbs.

Fuel was suspected at first Drained the bulkhead filter and it was clean. Replaced the engine fuel filter. Gas in filter was clean, no water present.

Did not have this problem before tune up..

Thanks for all the responses. Will let you know if I find anything. Yes it is weird.

Update: Switched fuel tanks, took it out for a test today idled out just fine. Went to get up on plane and port engine stumbled and surging, could not get port engine over 2k, the throttle would move up but the rpm stayed around 2k with a lot of surging, no turns involved. dropped both engines back to 1.5k and came back in, she ran smooth. Inside the no wake dropped to 1k and no problems. Could this be carburetor related. Perhaps timing, almost sounds like its not advancing the spark. Also noted was the smell of gas when I got back to the slip. I am open to any ideas or suggestions. Cap rotor and wires look fine. Will re-check the timing 8 deg btdc. Thanks.

Rarely does algae grow in the bottom of gasoline fuel tanks but it does and did happen to me 20 years ago. Same symptoms the engine would die when up on plane after 30 seconds or so. I added diesel fuel additive with BIOCIDE and let sit for 24 hours. Problem gone. Change your fuel filters several time after to keep from clogging up carburetors.

Smell of gas suggests to me the carb is running rich and or there's excess fuel somewhere not getting burned off.

Floats may be heavy.
Had a 1400 series carb on my Chevelle, could not get the A/F mixture right no matter what I did. Eventually found one of the floats had a hole in it and was full of fuel. New floats and it burned the tires all the way down the street.

He switched fuel tanks, issue remained, so it's not fuel tank unless both tanks have the same issue.

Probably from the burritos you ate while out. Sorry, I could not resist.
:D:cool::D:p

Update: Just finished putting on the new Carb. Real simple, exact replacement for the Carter AFB, only difference is the edelbrock uses an electric choke. Which brings me to my next question, I know the 12vdc for the choke should come off of the purple wire. where do I find the purple wire to tap into?? I found two wires that were crimped off but neither had 12vdc with the ignition in the on position. Thanks.
