Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

@fwebster where can I find the arrangement number on the engines? There is a Carter machinery store not too far from my house so that's good advice.

It will be the data plate on each engine.

Looks like this:

Once You have your Serial numbers, you can find parts and prices and order online. It takes a little getting used to, but you can find excellent drawings of how all of this is assembled and order the parts for your project. If nothing else, Its a great resource.

Like Frank, I'm a fan of CAT filters and belts, but I also buy about everything else on the engines including new nuts and bolts, o-rings etc. One stop shopping from my computer and I think the prices are very reasonable, not to say you cant save a few $$ if CAT is not the OEM...Transmission coolers are and example...

Seawater pumps is another example of Cat OEM items that Caterpillar does not make. OEM seawater pumps, impellers and internal parts are supplied by Sherwood and are available almost anywhere. I found that Cat OEM belts, filters, hose clamps, and hoses (down stream of the seawater pump) are far superior to aftermarket parts.

My transmission cooler wasn't compromised like I thought so I can pay to return it or if someone is in need I can ship it to you....?

I was on the boat for the first time today since buying it. One of the engines had the plate Frank referenced, one had the plate but nothing was on it. Please see attached. Is this normal?

Yup, I have the SNs. I was only checking the plates because of @fwebster comment:

"Take both the engine's serial number and the AR # (arrangement number) with you a good parts guy can find anything you need with those 2 numbers."

The photo you attached was the plate on the governor and it does not contain the engine serial # or AR#.

The arrangement number specifies what options the enginer were assembled with when they were assembled at the distributor who marinized them. For example, if you look in the parts list, you may find 3-4 seawater pumps that are only different because there is a straight, 45˚ or a 90˚ fitting on the inlet of the pump or, perhaps, several alternators for 56A, 90A or 110A output. With thwe AR# the parts guy can see exactly what you need for your engines.

I will add that once you have owned the Sea Ray/Caterpillar engines a while, you pretty much figure out what parts you need ……or don't want to source from Cat for example, I already told you the seawater pumps are an OEM Sherwood product and the Sherwood catalog has photos so you can visually match which pump you need. The alternators are Leece-Neville (Prestolite) and they stopped offering the 56A alternator and I replaced mine with 90A Prestolite alternators ($256 )and had to make a new bracket for the belt guard as opposed to order9ing a new 56A alternator from Caterpillar for $720. In every work-around I found/used it was pretty easy to find the OEM supplier for Cat, thanks in part to having the best parts guy in captivity at our marina.

Thanks Frank, as always this is very helpful information. I was posting from my phone last night, not sure how that last photo got in but it was a mistake. The plates photos are right above that post.

The coolant expansion tanks were both empty. I filled them to "Cold" so I can keep an eye on the levels. I noticed a second nipple at the top with no hose attached to it. Prior boats did not have this. What is this for? My first thought was to let air out, but I thought these were closed/sealed systems?

These diesels filters are new to me. They are on the starboard side. I assume I will find a matching pair on the port? Which one is critical to replace/keep clean and how often? It is as simple as spin the T bolt off, remove, replace for both?

the smaller one is probably for your generator. Its that simple though I'm going to finally add the valves to the bowl so its easier to drain the junk or water if any ever accumulates. Hard to tell from your pic if yours has them already

When I bought our boat the racors were BLACK. I used Franks diesel treatment regimen and the next time I changed them they were black again, and finally the next time they were a nice offroad diesel colored pink. The black gunk was all the junk breaking up and dying off from the tanks

Thanks, very helpful.

Looks like I did not get the model/part # in my pics. Does anyone know what they are and a good online place to purchase them?

Thanks

I think many of us run 30micro, some run 10. the part number is 2010PM for the 30micron. I get them on amazon by the boxload

The racor model is 500MA
