Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

I installed the H/E cap today, I attempted to install the 3 new zincs and this is what I found. I'm making a call to Boatzincs.com and will be emailing these pic's along with a bill for time & parts... The zincs in their CAT 3126 kit are too long !!!View attachment 122875 View attachment 122877 View attachment 122878 View attachment 122880 View attachment 122881 View attachment 122882 View attachment 122883 View attachment 122884
Could this be the reason you broke the cap?

Yes... Exactly.

Don't feel bad.

I didn't think about masking off the transmission rear main output shaft output seal before I went to paint - I damaged that seal...........

Really didn't want to even admit it here, but am doing so to ease your pain.

We all make dumbass mistakes from time to time.

Likely I win the prize this month.....

it damaged the seal? Did the paint get on the sealing surface?

yes, the couplers were rusty from the previous dripless seal not receiving the required cooling water due to critter growth (oh, the trials and tribulations of a Dock Queen)

Got the water issues handled.

Decided NOT to use rattle cans on this project

I used POR-15 on any rust spots, then sprayed Nissan PARIS WHITE, automotive enamel, with FEE a dash of extra hardener.

Both shafts on this 45DA are easily turned by hand.

After the paint dried, it was painted tight.

That's when I had my .....OOPS moment

Thank goodness I'm doing this project in sections, and had not yet gotten to the port side !

ohh the dripless seal? I read that as the oil seal on the transmission. Not that the dripless is fun to replace but a heck of a lot better than pulling the transmission

No,

You read it right.

I FIXED the little spray leaks at the dripless.

I CREATED the trans leak at the output shaft

I am paying to have the aftercoolers removed/serviced on mine this week. I saw another thread on here, can't find it now, where someone pulled there's and was asking if they needed cleaning. In my opinion if you are going to go thru the effort to remove /reinstall why not go ahead and have them cleaned?

agreed. Once they’re off get them tested and cleaned

Now that I own the boat I need to start buying some of the parts to get the service up to date. Thermostats, belts, ELC, etc. Where do you buy these types of parts, from Caterpillar direct? Do I purchase Marine parts, or are they interchangeable with truck and heavy equipment engines?

I always used genuine Caterpillar parts. I found them to be cheaper than auto parts stores after-market parts. Since you will be away from the waterfront a good part of ypur time, try to develop a relationship with the parts department at a Cat dealer's store that specializes in earth moving equipment as opposed to a store close to the water where prices will be higher.

Take both the engine's serial number and the AR # (arrangement number) with you a good parts guy can find anything you need with those 2 numbers. Just tell the parts guy you need thermostats, thermostat gaskets, belts and engine hoses for your engine serial #'s. Margins are set by dealer management so the parts guy is just hitting "enter" and he doesn't care if the guy in front of him is a boat or road grader owner.

My transmission cooler wasn't compromised like I thought so I can pay to return it or if someone is in need I can ship it to you....?
