Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

I close the fuel valve at the racor, drain them, replace the filter and turn the valve back open, they then fill themselves...

What!! That's too easy...crazy talk.

Learn something new around here every day!

Of course I don't have valves at the Racors, just the main shut offs, but I'd imagine they would work as well...I'll have to try it.

I fill the bowl back up with clean diesel using basic 1 gal fuel jug, put the cap on and then prime/bleed the system.

Then you need to bleed the system. I use the priming pump, but if yours is old or leaking, it’s a messy PITA. I replaced my pumps to make sure they function.

Frank recommended opening the throttles and starting the engine, then closing the throttles when it fires.

On my 10 meter I installed a 12v. electric fuel pump and a set of ball valves.

This allowed me to install all the fuel filters DRY, flip a few valves and prime the entire system.

It also allowed me the ability to FLUSH DOWN the filter bowls with the bottom valves open, CLEANLY and EASILY !

I did not use a toggle switch for fear of someone bumping it. Used a simple NAPA keyed on/off switch.

I plan on adding this feature to the 45DA sometime in the future.

Makes a nasty job clean and easy.

WELL WORTH the cost.

BEST !

Greg - one bit of advice if I may.... make sure you read and understand the filter changing procedure 100%. Otherwise you'll introduce air into the fuel system and you're going to be back here asking how to restart your engine. It won't be fun.

Purging the air out of a 3100 series Cat engine is a real job. If you know what you are doing it can burn up 45 minutes…..if you have never bled one, think 2 hours.

I just watched some videos on how to replace the Racor filter. They suggest filling the canister back up with diesel fuel, video I watched looks like the dude was using a water bottle for the diesel fuel. Is this what others do? Is something like an empty gallon water jug safe to use for storing diesel fuel?

A Racor, by design, cannot self prime unless you are lucky and have your fuel inlet lower than the fuel level in the tank.

You should manually fill the Racor bowl, then let the filter sit for several minutes so the paper element can absorb all the fuel it can, then top off the bowl and put the lid on the filter.

I am sure this has been shared before. Thought I'd shared it again. My GF's brother-in-law shared it with me from CAT. Are you using the Thread Lock and Pipe Sealant?

I picked up my $400 new fuel primer pump from CAT yesterday. It's not painted at all. I don't know what the current one looks like. Should I put some kind of paint on it before installing it? Also, there are no mounts/hardware on it. I am wondering how the old one comes off and this on goes on.

Mine is painted white, including the cap. Maybe paint it white and leave the cap as is. Your call. I am sure someone will chime in on how to remove/install.

My gfs brother in law, former certified caterpillar mechanic, recommends replacing the entire pump.

Does anyone know if cat sells a marine version of parts, and that's what I should be telling them when I order? I did tell them this was for boat engines. Maybe a better way to ask the question is does caterpillar know based on the serial numbers what the application is for the engines? Do they know the engine ended up in a boat, a truck, a piece of heavy equipment, etc.

I've got just the pump part that I'm replacing this weekend, so interested in hearing advice on steps get that done.

As for the serial numbers question, I registered on the Cat parts site and plugged in my serial numbers, and it knew that they were marine engines. The site will show parts that are specific to the marine application, at least it does for me.

Good Call. 75% of the priming pumps that leak do so because the shut off valve has slipped on its shaft and you loose the registration with which to set the little valve in a fully closed position.

It certainly cant hurt to replace the whole manifold unit but seems like more work plus requires bleeding the system.
Pump comes off easily with large open end wrench BUT I think the bleed valve should be in the bleed position..or not. So sorry I cant remember. Hopefully someone will.

My girlfriend's brother-in-law has done this many times and said he can show me how to do it, I'll report back once we do it.
